USA Boxing Team manager Gerald Smith, far left, bottom row, with team members and coaches to Cuba, I had a dream two months before about being in Cuba," ex plains USA team manager Gerald Smith of Warm Springs. "On the morning of January 9 1995, while still in bed asleep, I by Bob Medina : The air was clean, as was the wa ter, non-polluted. The ocean water was clear, aqua colored, and the beaches had white sand. But before I knew anything about this boxing trip recived a telephone call from USA staff manager Dave Lubs. Before Dave could say anything I answered the phone, not knowing who was on the other end, saying 'Yes I'll go"! "Dave, confused by what he had just heard, responded by asking, 'How did you find out? Who's talked to you already?' I finally told Dave that no one had said anything to me, that I had just said that as a joke. After all was said, Dave informed me that I had been choosen team man ager for a boxing tournament in Matanzas, Cuba. "The trip was great," says Gerald. From what I've heard from the three coaches and seven USA boxers, ev eryone loved it. The Cardin Cordova tournament in Matanzas, Cuba was an excellent competition. Of course there were the Cuban number one and two teams that included the world's number one boxers in each weight division," says Gerald. "The USA athletes were gentlemen and competed to the best of their abili ties. We're proud to say.they came back with five bronze medals. No one backed down from the Cuban boxers but rather stepped it up two or three notches." The Cuban people seem friendly, proud and certain of who they are, as well as where they are. Being in Cuba was like stepping back in time to the I950's or early I960's. It has roads without cars, buildings with out lights and fields without tractors. It was a great trip and a different experiance and I do plan on returning on my own someday." Upon returning to the United States, I recived word that I had again been choosen team manager and that the German Boxing Federation had requested the USA team to train in Berlin, Germany April 18 to May 15 1995 prior to the world champion ships. Before closing, Gearld wanted to express his thanks to his family and friends for being supportive and un derstanding. Thank you, USA box ing and USA boxing team members. Thank you all for the honor and re spect for permitting me to be your team manager.'
