4 April 14, 1995 Warm Springs, Oregon Spilyay Tymoo , E Coosh EEWA: The way it is S-PthYhY SPAifS Easter, a day of rejoicing Just recently the Tribal Council I approved the fishing in the Deschutes River at Sherars Bridge. The spring salmon season will be limited to week ends to Tribal Members. With the salmon on the down swing and almost to the point of extinction it is speculated that there will be a very few salmon caucht and some say there may be nothing caught at all. Salmon plays an important ro'e in the Native American's life, the river tribes as it was shown this past week-end where the Salmon Feast was held in the longhouse at Celilo, Oregon. The Salmon Feast is held each year where all the Tribes gather to give thanks to the Great Creator for the first coming of the spring salmon and also for the abun- To the editor, Hello from Pastor Rick. EASTER, EASTER, EASTER! Yes in two days we celebrate Easter Sunday. Easter for the Christian is Pi-Umc-Sha, Root Feast and the Super Bowl all rolled into one day. It is the one day that shouts to the world of all faiths and religions that for Christianity, our God is the God who came for us. That as much a I run from life, from myself, or from love, this Christian God will be there at the end of my running. That this Christian God will be there during the run itself. This is the good news of Easter. In my pride, in my sorrow, in my fears, my Jesus will be there. That is the promise of the Bible. To make this promise real, to put the works to the results. Easter needed A Good Friday. So remember Friday April 14, is Good Friday, the day to ,i r . uance or saimon, ana mat no-one was allowed to fish each year before the Traditional Ceremonies were completed. Celilo Oregon now .s just a spot along 1-84, from west to lhc ise of being (hcre &r us was east. At one time before The Dalles Dam flooded the ancient fishing the hanging of Jesus on the Cross. So grounds at the Celilo Falls, it was like the melting pot for all the river jn my pride, in my sorrow, in my tribes as they gathered during each big run that came up the river, fears, the blood of Jesus that fell to Tribes from Warm Springs, Yakama, Umatilla, Nez Perce all gathered the earth; the sweat of Jesus that to fish for the salmon. Today if you have never lived during the days dropped to the ground; was the cost of the Great Celilo Falls, it doesn't mean much to anyone. Just a story g'ven t0 be lhcre for me-A life g'ven of the past. to death so that all of the deaths we Just recently there was an editorial in one of the local papers saying haye had here in Warm Springs are that the Warm Springs Tribes must explain, "Why thev feel ihe? not permancnt- A hanging JesUS f should take some of the few remaining Chinook Salmon from the Deschutes River." It's quite evident that the salmon is one of the back bones for the Indian Tribes for a reason to permit tribal members to fish. Or Could it be they know something the general public doesn't know? For centuries the salmon has played an important role for the river Indians. Traditional ceremonies and cultural customs are observed and these rituals have been handed down for centuries of how the Tribes give thanks to the Great Creator for the abundance of fish for their livelihood. So, why do the tribes have to explain anything to anyone? wny did the White man make a bunch of promises to the Indians Proposal offered- To whom it may concern: The Shekinah Enterprises pro poses to construct a three bedroom dwelling with 2 full bathrooms for $47,900. The Indians give thanks to the "Great Creator, " and not to the Great White Father. There never was and never will be a Great White Father. This is the reason I have always believed that we should protect our treaty rights to the fullest extent. Never, never alter any wording, and never, never agree to change anything, no matter what. A change of a word or a few words could spell disaster to our treaty rights. We, the Native Americans, are being pushed further and further into the corner so we have to protect what little natural resources we have left. Never accept gifts that look suspicious and could do us harm in the future. We've got to stick strongly on the original agreements of our treaty with the United States Government that was signed many years ago. We've got to dig in and protect what little we have left or become one of the endangered species, and this we don't want. AHH-NAH-CHI-TOON!!! SS SS SS Diversity, this has been a big subject the past year or two. The talk of trying to ease the problwem here, especially in Central Oregon, but as time passes we are still in the middle of things, the whole ball of wax where the problem exists. The Central Oregon area is where the big squawk comes from because there are more and more mixed races gathering here in the area. Around here the big issue is between the Hispanics, Native Americans.and the Whites. Three races don't seem to mix very well and no one seems to know just where to put the cap on things. One of the biggest problems is the communication gap between the Hispanics and the rest of the world. Almost all of them cannot speak English so they gather in groups and try to have an interpreter who will speak for the group. This makes it look like they are plotting something when they are all grouped up. Makes the other races uneasy when they see this and usually a fight busts out. Prejudice starts right from home where people blame the others for the trouble around the area. People blame the gang situation, but the real truth the gang problem is not at fault at all. There are wanna-be gang members but that doesn't constitute a gang. When kids are small they all get along real well together, there is no difference among them until they get home. That'sa where everything starts, where the father doesn't want his kids mixed up with the other races and he makes it known for his kids to stay away from other kids on the block. Yep ! it's a real problem and will take a few years to solve this problem. Nigh!! Thank you to the men and women of the Utilities department. I know that people get : made that Utilities does not come and fix things quick enough for them. But, they are so few to do so much here in Warm Springs. I am very happy that there is alot of support to me in my competition. I would like to express my thanks to everyone who encourages me. This is my third year in High School Rodeo and I have done fairly well. In my freshman year I qualified for state and won the average at the state finals but missed qualifying for the Nationals by one point. Last year I again qualified for state, but my partner got hurt in the first round of bull riding, putting us out of compe tition for the nationals; however, I have qualified for the Silver State High School International Rodeo in Fallon, NV both years and last year finished 5th in the nation. This year my partner, Joe Painter (from Seaside, OR) and I won the first rodeo at Condon, we placed 4th at Klamath Falls and just won Eu gene. This puts us in first place as a Thank you for support I would like to thank Jennifer Church, Lydia Maya and Tina Harvey for all the support in school! Thanks, Angela Polk team for the yearly standings. The sport is not financially sup ported by the schools, my mother has been doing some fund raising to as sist me with my expenses. She will be continuing to do this throughout the season. I would like to thank the Education Department and Mike Clements for helping me go to Fallon last year; I would like to thank James Red Fox for his support of me and slipping me a few bucks for fee's and my Aunt Rosie too. I appreciate the local businesses, Macy's Market, DMJ Automotive and WS Forest Products for buying ads from me. Last year I had a lot of moral support from my Grandmother Chris and will greatly miss that this year. But hope to make her proud by qualifying for Nationals this year and trying to be a' champion. My club Rodeo is coming up May 13 & 14 in Redmond, I hope some of you can come up and watch and sup port the SPORT OF HIGH SCHOOL RODEO.
