The White Buffaloes played a tough defense as Junction City was unable to score on the control of the opening tip of the game. The Buffs took the ball down and scored and with another two quick scores they found themselves up 6-0 early in the game. Junction City was able to tie the score at 1 1 each but the determined White Buffaloes kept their momentum going to keep ahead of the Tigers during early part of the game. Both teams played tough defense but Jeremy Jacks kept the Buffs in the game under real tough pressure from the taller opponents and Jake Suppah hitting the long bombs from the outside. The Buffs managed to out score the Tigers in the first half by the score of 21-15, at the intermission. In the first half the Buffs shot a 69.2, 9-13 field goals and 50 at the foul line 1 out of 2. The third quarter went on an even basis as both teams really played good defense to where neither team could break loose on a scoring surge. The Tigers managed to out score the Buffs 9-8 in the third quarter but the Madras boys managed to hold the lead. In the final period the Tigers made a desperate run at the Buffaloes to where they took a 44-43 lead which really brought the home town fans of Junction City to life, but Madras was able to recover and out play the Tigers to regain the lead as Scott Riddle got a rebound and went up for two points and was fouled to make it a 3 point play. From that point on the Buffs were able to contain the Tigers the rest of the way to get the 50-46 win. Abig"W". Jeremy Jacks led the scoring for the Buffs with 16, Phillip Miller 14, Jake Suppah 8, Michael Kirsch 7, Scott Riddle 5. For Junction City Luke Gambee 14, Elias Hayes 13, Ty Tothenberger Woodburn 59, The Bulldogs of Woodburn put the clamps on the White Buffaloes on Friday night as they won 59-49 sending Madras to play for third place at the 25th U.S. Bank sponsored 3-A boys basketball tournament at Eugene. A whole bunch of turn overs seemed to be one of the big problems for the Buffs as they had 25 turn overs in the game as to 15 for Woodburn. The lead changed hands several times during the game but down the stretch as the Bulldogs started to use the keep away tactic put the Buffs into fouling position and the Bulldogs were deadly at the foul line The game was close all the way and some bad turnovers gave the Bulldogs a slight edge to put the Buffs on the catch up status but the only way they could get the ball was by fouling or after a sure layup by Woodburn. The game was won at the free throw line as Woodburn made 22 of 27 while the Buffs only had 3 of 5 attempts. The Buffs un-ranked in the final state polls made it known that they were there to play basketball by first disposing of the No. 2, rated team of the state the Astoria Fishermen in the opening round. A game where the sports writers never gave the Madras White Buffaloes any hope of going anywhere. After winning the first game it was a game against the local favorite and defending champions, the Junction City Tigers. Once again most of the sports writers were about to write the Buffs off as they were the underdogs and bumping their heads to the wall so-to-speak, but the determined White Buffalo team took it right to the larger Junction City team beating them and sending them in the consolation bracket. The third game was a set back when they met the highly rated Woodburn Bulldog team. It appeared the Buffs didn't play up to their potential and at the same time the Bulldogs were playing just a little over their heads and doing everything right in the game. Well, who's next? The Henley Hornets who were rated No. 4, in the final state polls. And the chips were on the table for the third place trophy. Well the sports writers had Henley the winners for sure and assured them Suppah and Jacks All-stars Jake Suppah and Jeremy Jacks make the All-Tournament All-Star team. Jacks on the first five and Suppah on the second five. The only other team to have two selections on the all star list were the Champions Stay ton, with Josh Buckley, and Buffaloes top No. 2 Astoria As the U. S. Bank sponsored 3-A boys basketball tournament got underway the Madras White Buffaloes were matched against the No. 2 ranked team in the state, Astoria, in first round action and superised everyone and beat them 46-37. After a cold start the Buffaloes trailed most of the game. It appeared the Fishermen would live up to their ranking but the Buffs kept hanging around picking away at the Fishermen lead. When the first quarter ended the score was Astroia 9, Madras 6. As the game went along the Buffs seemed to settle down to face their opponets more aggressively. The defense stiffened and shut down the inside scoring. Scoring came hard earned by both teams as the Fishermen held on to the lead throughout the first two quarters and when the first half came to a close the score was 18-13, Astoria. In the second half the Madras White Buffaloes seemed to have settled down and came out with more spark and going right at the Fishermen causing turn overs and scoring to close the gap from fine play of Scott Columbia River Chinooks, Mission Magic champions of youth tourney The following are the results of the 1st Annual Columbia River Chi nooks & Scow-Ma Don't Foul out, Just Say No ! The fan turn out was great for the Madras White Buffaloes in their final bid for some hardware and to make their trip worth while. In the game the Hornets controlled the ball at the opening tip but were unable to score. Both teams had possession a couple of times apeice before Henley lit up the scoreboard for two points. The Buffs were unable to answer and Henley built up a little lead on the Buffs by the score of 9-0, before the Buffs could get on the score board. One of the big threats was Henley's Jeff Riggs who has had some good scoring games during the tournament. Riggs has been hard to stop all season long as his favorite is hitting the paint with drives to the basket where he usually scores or is fouled. Midway through the second Suarter things didn't look so good for le Buffs as the score was 31-20, when all of a sudden the Buffs went on a scoring binge and making a 18 1 run to gain a 38-32 lead, and from then on it was the Buff game. The Henley Hornets were on the catch up postition which made the game more exciting for the Madras fans who were in attendance. It was just as much as an exciting game for the folks at home listening to the radio Michael Mender. Others who made the team were Enrique Sandoval, Woodburn, Jeff Riggs, Henley, Nathan Costor, North Valley, Roger Morse, LaSalle, Zack Hiatt, Astoria, Rusty Kieth of Brookings-Harbor. Sportsmanship went to Mac Hi. Riddle who came off the bench to add some punch in the rebounding area. Consistant play from Jake Suppah and Jeremy Jacks kept the Buffs in the game. As the game progressed the Buffs kept picking away at the lead of the Fishermen and in time the Buffs out scored them 12-8 to cut the lead to just a single point as things started to look dim for the Fishermen. Madras gradually overtakes Astoria and gained the lead and held it for the rest of the game, and even led as much as 10 points at times. Going down the stretch the Fishermen tried everything to get back the lead from the Buffs, but fouling was not the way to go as Jake Suppah was 5 of 6 at the free throw line, Phillip Miller was 3 of 4. The Buffs were 12 of 19 at the foul line. For a team that never made the top ten ranking throughout the year and was the only team to beat the No.l ranked LaSalle Falcons during regular season play and now putting the No. 2 raked Fishermen down and the next is the defending champions the Junction City Tigers, who are the local favorites in the game. ner-up-Columbia River Scow-Ma, 3rd place-WS Panthers 4th place Simnasho Vols Sportsmanship went to the Lady Hawks from Warm Springs All Stars: 1) Orie Made, Scow Ma 2) Thelma Reuban, Mission Magic 3) Chrissy Sanders, WS Pan thers 4) Blanche Mitchell, Simnasho Vols 5) Jacinda Stahi, Wapato Ris ing Stars 6) Lanada Teeton, Burn, OR Individual Awards are as follows; MVP-Matilda Jones, Simnasho Vols; Miss Hustle-Tera Wallulatum Simnasho Vols, Tourney High Scorer-Shamona Charley (31 pts), Miss Defense-Audra Reuban The Chinooks and Scow-Ma would like to thank the following sponsors: Foster & Sandra Kalama, Shirley & Delvis Heath, Aurolyn Stwyer, Snuff logging. After the Buffs gained the lead the tempo seemed to be with the Buffs from then on as they pretty well contained Riggs in his scoring threats even though he managed to score 19 points during the game. The Hornets were able to out score the Buffs in the third quarter 9-8, but it was the second and final quarter that belonged to the Madras White Buffaloes. In the second quarter they went on a 25-1 3 scoring run over the Hornets and in the final stanza they went out 17-7, to wrap up the game and claim the 3rd place trophy. Jeremy Jacks did a great job making 7 of 12 field goals and was 3 for3 at the foul line for a total of 20 points to out score everyone in the game. Phillip Miller added 16 points from 8 field goals and a big night under the backboards pulling down 12 rebounds. Jake Suppah had 9 points from 2 of 7 field goals and a 3 pointer also 4 for 4 at the foul line, he also grabbed 5 rebounds during the game. Michael Kirsch added 6 points from 2 of 4 three pointers. Scott Riddle had 5 points from 2 of 4 field goals and he was 1 for 1 at the foulline. Seth Johnson added 4 points as he was 2 of 4 attempts and pulled down 4 rebounds. T. J. Foltz had 3 points on a field goal and he was 1 of 2 at the foul line. No one was ever in foul trouble during the game. In the first half the Buffs made 13 of 26 field goals for a 50 effort and were 5 of 9 at the free throw line. In the second half the Buffs made 16 of 28 field goals for a 57.1, and were 3 of 4 at the foul line giving them for the game at field goals 24 of 51 field goals (47. 1 ), they were 9-1 3 at the foul line (69.2). Maybe it was better to go into the tournament unranked to where the Buffs didn't have to prove themselves their status. 16 & under tourney success The Columbia River Chinooks 16 & under Just Say No!
