been doing a great job working hard
at practicing the dances they will

come show them how much we ap

March is National Nutrition
month
Head Start children will be doing
different activities learning about
healthy foods which help them grow
and develop.
Parent's Club's "Made in Warm
Springs" raffle will begin this month,
remember to buy your tickets! Ask
any of the Parent Club officers:
Sheilah Wahnetah, Patsy Lenbek,
Shirellc Thomas or Darlene Bailey.
There are also otherparents who have
volunteered to sell tickets. Thank you
for your quick response in returning
the surveys and volunteering to help.
Parents are doing a great job of
volunteering their time for the ECE
programs. To show how proud we
are of our parent volunteers we've
initiated a "Parent of the Month"
award program. A parent will be cho
sen from each Head Start classroom
based on the amount of volunteer
hours accumulated during the month.
The. narents will receive an award
and recognition in our monthly news
letter as well as in the Spilyay. Re
member, volunteer hours don't have
to be only in the classroom, ask teach
ers if they have something you can do
at home. Sell raffle tickets! The time
spent selling will be counted as vol
unteer time.

200 words between the ages of one
and two to about 1,200 words by the
age of four."
Bring out yourchild's humor. Here
are some ideas to assist you in help
ing your child develop hisher "funny
bone . Support silly make believe
play. Provide puppets, funny props
for dress up and other materials for
children to experiment with different
voices and actions. Listen to your
child's humor. It can offer insights
into hisher concerns or interests. For
instance, constant joking about bad
dreams may indicate underlying fears
or an interest in silly rhyming may be
something you can develop further
in stories and games.
Don't forget to use your own sense
of humor. Responding to frustrating
situations with humor or just getting
down on the floor and engage in a
good old-fashioned ticklefest with
your child will not only set a good
example for himher but will give
you lots of pleasure, too.
Parent Education
Did you attend the Auto Mainte
nance workshop Friday, February 24
at the training room of the Education
Center? What did you think? If you
were unable to attend let us or Norma
Simpson of OSU Extension know if
you would be interested in having
another workshop date set up. This
training showed how to care for your
car, truck or van.
Money Management training is
set for March 13, 20 and 27 in the
Training Room at the Education Cen
ter from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Follow up
training will be in April.
Beginning March 28, Parenting
classes will be held 10 a.m. to 12
noon for 10 weeks. The sessions will
be every Tuesday in ECE Confer
ence room 2E; child care will be
provided.
When registering a child, parents
filled out a family questionnaire. This
gave us an idea of what you as par
ents would like to learn more about.
We try to implement these findings
through workshops or other training
sessions throughout the year. We are
always glad to help parents in what
ever way we can and appreciate par
ent participation in these projects.

Change the world one meal at a
time. Some four-year-olds have never
eaten a salad. That's one of the rea
sons there's Head Start. We give low
income preschool children the chance
to grow up healthy. And happy.
But we need health care volun
teers. Especially nutritionists like
you. Come show a child what strong
bodies are made of. Because if you
change the world of a child, you
change the world.

Thank you for
To the editor,
To the people of Warm Springs, I
would like to take this time to thank
the many people who were there for
myself and my family after losing
my grandfather (whom I only knew
as Daddy) Wilkins "Popeye" Hellon.
Many a time did he speak of so many
people that he knew all his life. Or
grew up with and worked with. All of
the memories he had he shared with
us and just to hear the laughter or see
his smile made the stories that much
more special to me. I am so glad that
he has left good thoughts and beauti
ful memories for us all. For that is all
that keeps me going today.
My only regret is that I was lost in
my alcoholism after bonus time up
until two weeks before he left us. I
am going to carry that hurt forever.
Yet, I'm glad that I could do what I
had to do for him during his last days.
I loved him so much that there are so
many things that I should have done
and said. But waiting and keeping it
all in made the loss all the more hard
on me. So, people, never be afraid to
tell someone you love them and how
important they are to you. for we all
don't know when our time will come
and we need to tell one another how
we feel.
At this time I give a very special
thanks to Prunie for her teachings to
me, without hearing that I would not
be here today . It meant So much to me ''
for your words of wisdom and the
time I got to heart it felt like it was
just meant just for me. '
Thank you Charlotte Herkshan
also, for her teaching and listening to
me pour my heart out and telling me
it's okay to make mistakes. Thank
you for cleaning our home and just
taking the time to let us know you

Thank you to the cooks for the

back the memories of the stories he'd

us, and he was never really sure of
whether or not he'd get one, so thank
you for letting me be witness to it for
it was special.
Thank you to the Community Cen

that made his day. His work was
important to him and you all made
him feel important and special for
doing his duties without complain

Thank you to the IRS for taking

love to gamble.
Many thanks to Lucille Schuster
for just being around all the time and
letting him know that you would take
car of Louise when she went with the
Senior van on trips. Your smiling
face always made him forget about
the way he'd feel when Louise would
leave for the day to spend time with
the elders.
To the E.C.D.C. staff over in Bend
for doing your best to keep my Daddy
healthy and comfortable while he
stayed for dialysis, he always told me
that the nurses treated him good and
the Senior Citizen staff of Bend that
brought the dialysis patients meals.
Although I don't know what the di
alysis process was, I know that he
went through it to extend his life a
little bit longer to be with my chil
dren Arianna, Dallas and Laura. He
always said they were his children
and all that he lived for or would
endure so much suffering for.
Our thanks goes out to ALL of
you for being there through it al,
taking the time to offer a kind word
or sending us a card. Giving him a
beautiful funeral service was some
thing that he had asked not to have.
He wanted to be put away without
any fuss but we didn't want anyone
hurt so we did the best we could. I
want to say that we appreciated all
who officiated, spoke, drummers,
dancers and kitchen helpers without
you all it would not have been so
beautiful.
Though we are left behind, I pray
that we all meet with Daddy again
and that we have the strength to go
on.
