Information useful on suicide topic-
.-from Community Health Educa
tion I In December 1994, a gathering
jcallcd Family Strengths and Spiritu
ality was held at the Warm Springs
;Agcncy Longhouse. The topic of sui

theme of this gathering. The number

Sever, the sensitive topic of suicide
may have been. Many of us try to
overcome the losses we've felt by
not talking about them. The gather
ing was the place to be, if a person
was ready to listen to the wonderful
teachings that were shared, and to
begin a healing journey within them
selves. ; Suicide has touched many lives
within our community. The gather
ing offered a time to talk about these
concerns, the impacts upon the Warm
Springs community and our people.
It was a time to hear information that
might have helped someone deal with
this type of loss. It was also a time to
validate the old beliefs, and why they
are held.
, As Indian people we often have
the answers to the problems we face
in today's world, but the problem
arises when we become afraid to
seek out, or hear what will be said to
us. The knowledge of knowing ones
self is the strength that can take an
individual through each day of their
life. The care of ones self should be
centered. Understanding our emo
tions, how we interact socially with
other people, how we care for our
selves physically, and most impor
tantly, now our spiritual belief sys
tem interacts, plays a vital part in our
daily lives.
During the gathering, this type of
information was shared with the par
ticipants. It not only validated the
old teachings, but could be related to
the way we live today.
' When preparing for the gathering
the presentation agenda allows for
an open format. This helps the com
mittee adjust the scheduling to ac
commodate the needs of the partici
pants, of the direction the discussion
Serving as ambassador just one
To the editor,
To my people, my year as the
Ambassador of the Confederated
bribes of Warm Springs has come to
an end. I want to take the time and
thank the people of Warm Springs
for allowing me the chance to
represent my people locally and
across Indian Country'. Thank y ou all
for allowing me to fulfill just one of
my many dreams. The year was long
and very rewarding. I traveled and
met many new friends and became
reacquainted with many relatives, and
shared a lot of laughter, tears and
dreams with the new friends that I
made. I now have many memories
that I will always cherish in my heart
for the things that I was allowed to
accomplish.
; '. There is a lot of particular people
that I would like to thank for their
support and I would like the
community to know of the help they
gave to me. Just to list a few-Verbena

takes.
As efforts continue to work toward
a healthier community the time has
come when we must talk about diffi
cult and sensitive issues. Suicide loss
is one of these areas. Mealing from
traumatic loss comes when one a per
son can speak about that loss, and
learn heshe is not alone in this type of
grief.
Information shared during the gath
ering spoke to the plan of our Creator
for each of our lives. We who arc left
behind do not have the responsibility
to judge whether an act as right or
wrong. Those of us left behind after
such a loss often do not sec, hear or
understand the message the Creator
may be giving to us about life. The
information shared during the gather
ing spoke to these unspoken mes
sages. If you were a participant at this
gathering and walked away with a bit
of information that is helping you,
then the effort of the gathering was a
success. The information shared gave
participants much food for thought.

An emotional word picture spoke
to the hearts of men in America.
Pictures grab and direct a person's
attention. Pictures bring our
conversations to life. Word pictures
lock into another person's memory.
Word pictures provide the gateway
of intimacy. Word pictures have the
power to dramatically change lives.
Now, did you notice that I went
from pictures to word pictures? You
can increase intimacy and
understanding in a relationship by
using a word picture in your
conversation. You may be asking
where does a word picture come from
and how do you use it? Each of us has
deep wells to dip into for our pictures.
The well of nature. Our world around
were identified as things that we need
to be watchful of in people who are
suicidal. How to cope with suicidal
talk was another area addressed. More
often than not, individuals that are
left behind tend to concentrate on
what could have been done. The guilt,
shame, misunderstanding, hurt, pain
and othcremotions that come up seem
to hit with a very deep impact upon
the loved ones left behind.
Yet, if you really think about it,
our strength has always been in our
ability to talk to one another, to share
feelings, and to listen with an open
heart, yet, it is also the most difficult
to do.
Loving each other, loving family
members, and especially loving our
children, was a strong message that
was sent by all presenters. The family
support was identified as a major con
tributor in the healing process.
The Family Strengths and Spiritu
ality Gathering will be held every
year. We encourage and invite all our
people to attend and journey with
others to a healthy way of life.

Our team from Warm Springs worked
so great that we came out first in
everything we did.
We even had a suitcase full of all
Native foods from the Warm Springs
area, thanks to my husband for
supplying it. They wanted each area
to bring Native food from the place
they represented.
With the weekend to spare, my
son William O. Chamema, Jr. drove
down from Oklahoma (Ft. Sill) to
spend the weekend until Monday with
us.
Saturday, after breakfast, our first
tour was the Governor's palace,
where the local Pueblo's brought their
wares. So we purchased several
Turquoise pieces $$$.
We even met a Yakama Native in
this group and she had moved to this
area.
After this spending spree, we
rented a car and drove to Laguna,
NM to visit my aunt, uncle & cousins,
whom I haven't seen in 33 years. It
was a very joyful reunion.
They invited Sara to drop in when
shey ever went through in the near
future.
Sunday, after Sara toured the

came from church, we took Sara to

full of LOVE that no matter where
our whole gang went the red carpet
was rolled out. And the services were
so outstanding.
During the week, all of us went
out after classes and dined at several
restaurants tasting their native foods.
All six different dishes went the full
circle so each of us could taste what
we ordered.
We became so bonded that it was
hard to separate and go our different
directions.
We received many stares for we
had one male in our group and the
rest were women.
We asked the local Indians how
they were treated. They informed us
that the city with all the Pueblo Tires
worked together with a lot of respect
and had a wonderful rapport with
each other. For the town functioned
