EMTs strive to improve safety, delivery of services To the editor, Hello from Pastor Rick. At the Warm Springs Presbyterian Church we have just finished a video series on relationships. I want to share some of the exciting information that we heard in this series. To honor. We are called to honor I didn't plan to get involved in the pre-hospital health care field when I moved to Warm Springs from St. Ignatius, MT in May of 1988. 1 am an enrolled member of the Confeder ated Salish & Kootenai Tribes of the Flathead Reservation and I had originally gone to college to get a teaching degree; however, life has a way of making a person change their plans. Sharon Orr When I moved to Warm Springs to take a position with the Forestry Branch of the BIA, my brother-in-law was the Fire Chief. He talked me into volunteering with the depart ment. Once I eot a taste of the emer gency medical field, I was hooked. I have since received my certificate an EMT-IID and am enrolled in the Paramedic Class through COCC starting in September. I am looking forward to the class and the hours involved in attaining the highest cer tificate one can receive in the Emer gency Medical Technician field. I do not take this career lightly. I have been volunteering with the Fire & Safety Department for the past five years and was voted Emergency Medical Services Providerof the Year for 1992. 1 enjoy helping people in that first "golden hour" following a Items for sale For sale at the Tribal Warehouse 4209 Holliday, Industrial Park 7 oz plastic tumblers 500case Reg. $16.88 now $8. 10 oz plastic tumblers 500case Reg. $29.16 now $15. 14 oz plastic tumblers 500case Reg. $29.39 now $20. serious accident or illness, knowing that my skills and knowledge can make the difference between life and death. It also means that I must con tinue to learn and stay current with the latest developments in the emer gency medical field. I have strong ties to this reserva tion, not only through my family, but through the friends I have made since moving here. My mother, sister, brother and daughter live and work here. Because of the love I have for my family, I want the best in medical care for them should they ever have an emergency. I feel I can give some thing back to my family, friends and the community of Warm Springs by becoming the best EMT I can. I believe that I have chosen the most rewarding and fulfilling career anyone can have. It is hard, exhaust ing and sometimes frustrating work, but the pav-off comes when I see that patient recover from an accident or illness and know that I truly made a difference. Deciding to become an EMT and volunteer with the Fire and Safety Department is the best deci sion I ever made. Sharon Orr, EMT-IID I work in the Public Safety De partment. My full time job is being a Police Officer, I also volunteer for the Warm Springs Fire & Safety. The department had asked me to volun teer, one because I am stationed out at Simnasho and that it is such a rural area with only a few people to vol unteer out there. In February of 1994 I started to attend all the Wednesday training sessions that are held at the fire hall. I am currently enrolled in the Basic EMT Class in Madras. Hello, my name is Louella M. Heath. I am 23 years old, an enrolled member and lived here all my life. I have a little family and they are William J. Bagley and our son JaimeRae L. Bagley. There are many reasons for my interest in the medi cal field, but only a few to tell. I worked at the Warm Springs IHS for three years as a Pat. RegyBilling clerk. There, I received training on how to deal with people to medical terminology and being able to work with doctors, dentists, nurses, phar macists and all the technicians. This is where I was introduced to the medical field. It was very interesting and fun. I moved to Range & Ag Secretary to try something new in life. After changing jobs, I had a little bit more time on my hands. With this time, I v ' i ' t' wanted to see what it's like to ride in the ambulance and fire trucks (and not be a victim or patient). In January 1994, 1 volunteered for Warm Springs Fire & Safety. It is kind of hard to deal with when you know or are related to someone whose house burnt down or get into serious accident. The reason I deal with this is because my son and I have had medical emer gencies and there was always an EMT there for us when we needed them the most. They cared and gave a lot of support. Sometime, somewhere in the near and far future, someone may need me and I want to be there to help them the way we were helped in the past I am currently enrolled in an EMTBasic Class with COCC. Which are taking place at Jefferson County EMS, in Madras from May to Sep tember of 1994. 1 would like to take this time to say thanks to all my family and friends for supporting me and having patience with me during this course. This type of work is very difficult and sometimes scary, but when it comes to putting our lives on the line to save a house and most important, a life, it is a very big accomplishment and it stays in the heart. We do the best we can for the community, we try to make a difference. And some times myself and others in this field just need a pat on the back, maybe a wave or hello and even a good hand shake to relieve some of the stress and feelings that are kept inside. When there is nobody to help you in an emergency situation, no matter what time of the day it is, WE AS A TEAM WILL ALWAYS BE THEREFOR YOU. f j r " ' - : , V , 1 ! I I . ff'WH.r nun. Dated at Warm Spring, Oregon, na 29th day of November. 1994. Witter LnfMn, m Jodfee, Warm Springs Tribal Court each other in our relationships. The word "honor" is to single out for praise; to stop and to allow others to see someone and their good work. We need to honor each other. The problem is how to honor someone in your relationship who is the very person you want to yell at. To begin do you know the differ ences between a man and a woman. NO, not just the physical stuff. This kind of stuff, women: a desire to have a good relationship, stronger physi cally, bilateral brain-(they thing with both sides), give sympathy, more personal, detailed, more in touch with their feelings. Men: lateral brain-men think one half at a time), logical, factural, conquer, objective, looking for solutions. The average woman speaks nearly 25,000 words a day. The average man speaks only around 12,300!! So, how can a Man and Woman with such differences cause a relationship to succeed and grow?? The big picture is LOVE. Remember love is not a feeling, it is a decision. commitment. Within this big picture are four areas needed to make it work. First, sccurity-somcone commit ted to me! Second, meaningful com munication. Third, romantic emo tional experiences. Fourth, physical needs, touch. We will talk more about the big picture and its parts in the future. Now, here is a test that both of you can use to make a relationship move forward. 1. Question?? Where do we want our relationship to be? 2. Ques tion?? Where is our relationship, in general, today? 3. Question?? What could we do in the he next several days or weeks to bring our relation ship closer to where we want it to be? A reminder, as the season of Christmas is here. The only true gift, is the gift of the love from God. Gambling is not a gift. In what it can give, it also takes... See you in church.
