Sturza felt that after seventeen years of teaching and sixteen seasons of being head volleyball coach, she needed a new challenge. She was involved in the Oregon Sports Leadership Development Program over the past year which included twelve women throughout the state who were mentored by their school athletic directors. Her job is "going well and people are helping out, but it is very time consuming with lots to get done in the short amount of time in the days" she stated. Sturza says although she likes a challenge, she is feeling a little overwhelmed, but once she gets everything under her belt she will be O.K. And she plans to be the Athletic Coordinator for some time. She teaches three P.E. classes in the morning and is the Head Volleyball coach after school. The rest of her time she is responsible for scheduling games and practices for all levels of sports which consists of eighteen. Make sure all students are eligible to participate in sports, oversee all twenty-seven coaches, coordinate game set-up, as well as do the budgets for the athletics department. She has recently developed a coaches handbook over the summer which will set guidelines for the coaches to follow, and she has worked on revisions for the athletic policy which has been accepted by the School board IS- $ I - i ) i w 1 I X " IFM, ir JL.k ghiimm miJ Margaret Sturza Lady Buffs finish 4-3 in Jamboree The Madras High School Varsity Volleyball team traveled to Estacada Thursday, September 8 to participate in the Tri-Valley Invitational. The event was to preview the league which Madras is now part of. As part of the Jamboree each team Silayed all others in one game to ifteen. The Buffs were defeated by The Dalles 7-15, but were victorious over Estacada 15-9, and Sherwood 15-3. They lost their fourth game 1 1 -15 to Portland Christian and their fifth game 12-15 to LaSalle. The Buffs came back in the last two, victorious 15-12 over Gladstone and 15-3 against Valley Catholic. Coach Margaret Sturza's overall perception is that the Tri-Valley League is "a strong league". "Sherwood and Valley Catholic are the only weak teams, everyone else will battle" Estacada finished second last year in the State Tourney. The standings at the end of the day were LaSalle 6-1, Estacada 5-2, Valley Catholic 4-3, Madras 4-3, The Dalles 4-3, Gladstone 3-4, Portland Christian 2-5 and Sherwood 0-7. On offense the Buffs had 62 kills, 143 swings, 22 errors and 28 block kills. In defensive passing, they were 127 for 221 with 45 errors which is 37 percent. In serving they were 101 over 111 which is 91 percent And in setting the Buffs had 86 of 139 attempts with 12 errors which totaled 53 percentile. Outstanding individuals were Becky Harrison who had an outstanding night with 91 percent serving, 45 percent passing, 12 kills and 29 swings. Erika Harris is team . captain and setter for the Buffalo team. "Fifty-three percent of her sets were excellent and with only thirty seven percent of passes being : excellent she made good things happen out of mediocrity. She touches the ball every play stated Sturza. Melissa Cavender had 94 percent serving with 19 kills and 37, : swings. Abby Nyara was the only . perfect server for the night as she was -,! . 16 for 16. Sturza comments, "All twelve z players got in, it was a great night. I feel we proved ourselves as a team to be reckoned with." Buffaloes Win Opener, Top LaPine 8-0 What a day for the Madras White Buffalo football team as they traveled to meet the LaPine Hawks in a non league contest Friday night September 9, 1994. Game time wasat7:30p.m.,in LaPine, Oregon. According to Coach Bruce Reece, the game wasadefensive game through out the evening until late in the game when Madras wasable to cross into pay dirt on apass from Quarterback Duncan Brunoe to J. Suppah. to put the Buffs out in front 6-0. The try for the extra pointwasgoodfor two points asBrunoe hit Suppah again on anotherpass.. This put the Buffs out to a 8-0, score and it remained that way the rest of the game. The previous week at a jamboree held at the ML View football field where four central Oregon teams met as each school played each other one quarter. On that night the LaPine Hawks out scored the Buffs 1 6-8, but that was justonequartcr. In the Jamboree Lapine held Ml View Scoreless and held the Bend Lava Bears to a scoreless tie also. With that things didn't look to bright for the Buffs at the start of the game but as the game wentalong the Buffs found that they could hold them and played good ball and eventually came out the winner. Coach Reese said they made some adjustments for the game after playing them one quarter last week. Those changes made a big difference in the whole gameplan.also to stun the LaPine team, as they might have thought they had it made over the Buffs this week. ' This week the Buffs host the always powerful CrookCounry Cowboys with game time at 7:30 p.m. in the Buff Stadium. Crook County a top threat in the Inter-Mountain league each year is not easy to beat . It looks like a very interesting night for the Buffs to get themselves ready for their new league as they participate in the Tri-Valley league, which consist of teams from r the Metro Area. Teams like the LaSalle Falcons, Gladstone Gladiators, Estacada Rang ers, Portland Christian Royals, Sherwood Bowmen, The Dalles Indi ans, and the Valley Catholic Valiants. A new year a new team and new league for the Madras White Buffaloes. Pinenut festival WSIRA Final Rodeo to be in Shurz, Nev.
