Panic attacks-Think

In the last issue, I described the
symptoms of panic attacks in which
many people suddenly feel terrified
for no reason they can name. By
popular demand, I've decided to write
a second article on suggestions for
coping with panic attacks.
If your heart races so fast that you
fear you might be having a heart
attack, it might be wise to have your
heart checked just to be sure. If it's
healthy, you'll have one less thing to
worry about. Panic attacks usually
only last for a few minutes, so if you
can find a quiet place to ride them
out They go away by themselves.
The panic makes it hard to breathe,
and that leads to more and more panic.
It helps to concentrate on your
breathing, slow it down, and get back

weekend, July 30-31, 1994 in Warm
Springs.
T.C. Logging took the
championship title of their tourney
defeating Pendleton (& Skok) with
a 7-1 score. Paula's Crew placed
third, while the Trimble team
trailed. The Free Spirits were the
champs of the At Least We Tried

Listen to the chatter inside your
mind. Is it going a mile a minute
about how one disaster is going to
lead to another? For example, if
driving in the car brings on a panic
attack, the mind may chatter like a
monkey about how if you pull over
for five minutes, someone is going to
beat you up and rob you. That isn't
very likely, and it sure doesn't help
you feel better when you're panicked
already. Instead of thinking of the
worst thing that could happen, try
thinking of the easiest Give yourself
reassuring messages like, "I'll just
pull over for a rest spot. In a few
minutes I'll be feeling fine. There's
nothing to be afraid of."

Relaxation tapes can be very
hclpful.Try selecting a favorite image
from a tape like floating on a colorful
cloud or seeing a butterfly coming
out of a cocoon and floating on a
summer breeze. Carry that image
which helps you relax whenever you
go into stressful situation like the
grocery store, mall or driving in a
car. While you're floating, you're
less likely to panic. This can help you
overcome the fear of having a panic
attack in public so that you can get
out of the house more.
Finally, for some people,
medication can bring relief. The staff
at the Community Counseling Center
can help determine what would work
best for your kind of symptoms. For

ready for move In, in a couple of weeks. This one in particular belongs to John
Jr. and Saphronia Katchia, which was taken in June.

the excessive drinking of someone
close. The following twenty questions

whether or not you need Al-Anon.

while intoxicated. It will not happen

of this year. Also I'm sorry to Peter

assaulting them also.

time were under the influence of
alcohol. The people justran and didn ' t
even call to report the fire. The fire
raced up White Hill and for a time
was a threat to the houses in West
Hills. People just don't seem to have
any regard for the property of others.
I put up a fence closing the road to
the Pumphouse and within just 24
hours the fence was cut. Signs were
posted showing it was private
property. One of the signs was torn
down. It is this type of destructive
behavior that has lead to the closing
of the area to public access by
vehicles.
We also do not want anymore
drinking and drug parties on our land.
We have received a number of reports
about the parties and people selling
and using drugs at the Pumphouse.
People who are caught driving to
the Pumphouse on the south side will
be reported to the police. We are
asking the police to charge these
people with Trespassing.
It is sad that it has come to this but
people have shown no respect to our
property. This property has been in
our family since the Treaty of 1 855.
Again we want to emphasize that
kids are welcome to walk into the
area to swim.

Housing Improvement
On Jury 11 the Tribal Council
authorized an application to H.U.D.
for a block grant to rehabilitate
qualifying homes in Elliot Heights
and Miller Heights. If approved, the
grant will be managed by the Housing
Department and Housing
Improvement Program (H.I. P.)
Coordinator, John Mcllwaine. Along
with housing rehabilitation, the grant
will be used to raise substandard,
vacant homes which are creating
safety hazards and cannot be brought
up to standard condition.
Initial surveys indicated nine
households are currently eligible in
the two neighborhoods (based on their
income) to apply for housing
rehabilitation assistance. The H.I.P.

Broncheau "Jinx" drowned in the
Deschutes River approximately
half a mile north of highway 26 on
WednesdayJuly 20, 1994.
He was born June 13, 1969 in
Madras, Oregon to Manuel and
Murial (Greene) Broncheau
Carrasco. He attended schools in
Warm Springs and Madras.
An all denominational Prayer
Service was held Thursday, July
21, at Bel-Air Colonial Funeral
Home in Madras. Dressing
Ceremonies were Friday, July 22
at the Agency Longhouse in Warm
Springs. Overnight services
followed and were officiated by
Nelson Wallulatum and Larry Dick.
Casket bearers were Kanet Wolfe,
Austin Greene, Truman
Lumpmouth, Jr., Wendall Greene,
Ron Bennett, Dorian Tappo, Joseph
Boise and Gayland Broncheau.
Norman
Twenty-three year old Norman
McKai Wolfe of Warm Springs
died at his home in Warm Springs
on Friday, July 29, 1994. The cause
of death is under investigation at
this time. He was a lifetime resident
of Warm Springs as well as an
enrolled member of the
Confederated Tribes of Warm
Springs.
He was born November 4, 1970
in Madras, Oregon to Beulah
(Switzler) and James Lee Wolfe,
Sr. He attended schools in both
Warm Springs and Madras.
A traditional dressing ceremony
was held Saturday, July 30 at the
Simnasho Longhouse. Overnight
services will follow Saturday and
Sunday. Pallbearers were Lenni
Miller, Avery Americanhorse,
Homes being built in the Mutual
Help project are due for completion
between the third week of August to
the last week of September. The
project is being funded by HUD,
(Department of Housing and Urban
Dcvclopmcnt).Twclve houses are
being built in Greeley Heights and
three are offsitc. They are in Schoolie
Flats, Sid waiter and Tcnino areas.
The Construction Contractors arc Tri
con, of Sumner Washington. The
construction of this project began
March 9,1994. After the inspecting
of the homes is complete, families
may move in and enjoy their new
homes. Housing, the contractor,
Tribal Inspector and the architect will
be in on the Inspection.
The second phase is due to begin
at the end of this month,
approximately. Thirty-six homes
have been approved, although the
project was set up for forty homes.
These homes are to be built in various
areas throughout the reservation.

Beginning Tuesday September 1 3,
1994 a four week information scries
for women on physical and emotional
abuse, will run until October 4,1994
from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the
Community Counseling Center.
Following is the schedule of topics.
Week 7 Introduction and
overview of different kinds of abuse.
Week 2 - Patterns of physical
abuse
Week J - Understanding
emotional abuse
Week Overcoming abuse.
Babysitting is provided. For more
information call Erin Sweeden or

Program available
Coordinator will be checking with
homeowners to make sure all eligible
households are assisted.
Homeowners are encouraged to
contact Mcllwaine at housing if they
think they qualify for housing rehab
assistance. Applications are accepted
from all eligible households, whether
or not they live in Elliot Heights or
Miller Heights.
The neighborhood-by-neighborhood
approach to housing
rehabilitation helps ensure that all
needy households are assisted and
that multiple resources are obtained.
A portion of the H.I.P. budget will be
reserved for homes not in the two
neighborhoods.

He was preceded in death by his
grandparents Francis and Cecelia
(Stacona) Greene, his uncles David,
Harold and Perry Greene, and his
father Manuel Broncheau.

his surviving sisters include
Marina, Marissa, Leann and Lucy
M. Wolfe, along with numerous
aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his
father James Lee Wolfe on
December 21, 1993,andhisbrother
James Lee Wolfe, Jr. on May 31,
1985.
