"Spilyay Speaks"
In Oregon, Video Poker is a
big hit for retailers and at the
same time a rotten egg for the
Indian reservations. Gambling is
going on all across the state and
no-one seems to be paying any
attention to it. But as soon as the
Indians mention a gaming estab
lishment than everyone is in an
up-roar saying that syndicates will
be coming in and taking over the
whole situation. Gangsters, rob
bers and stuff like that.
Its quite apparent that the Non
Indians are all against Indian gam
ing establishments. Wheneverthe
Indians stand to make a buck or
two to help themselves than gam
bling is like a big crime. And when the Indian tribes are striving to
become self-sufficient in today's society, their efforts are treated like
a plague of some kind.
While gaming is like a crime for the Native Americans, the state
allows 1 350establishments in the state to gamble. The lottery boasting
of netting $ 120 million per year. The average retailer makes $65,000
in commissions per year. It is also said that business establishments in
the larger cities each cash in on $250,000 or more per year. The top five
retailers here in Central Oregon each make more than $124,000 per
year, and there is no gripes from the non-Indians.
Yep! like the Ms said as we had ourmorning cup of coffee, they just
can't stand to see the Indians make a living. They must prefer to see
the Indians in the welfare lines so they can gripe about the Indians
using up their tax money by getting hand-outs. Even today there are
White people around the area, believe the Indians get checks each
month from the Federal Government to live on. Some say the Indians
don't have to work because the government gives them money each
month. "Ha!" wish that was true.
Here in Warm Springs we do get a small check each month but it
sure isn't from the Federal Government. It's our monthly per-capita
payments we get from our own resources like Timber, Power and other
sources of income we make during the year.
With most of the timber resources getting low the tribes must find
other means of income. Something that could create jobs for the local
people. We are always trying to find means of income for our people.
With our timber resources getting lower each year could effect ouf
employment in the woods and mills. Yep! we are always looking for
opportunities that will help our people, with jobs or some kind of
income. We have things on the drawing boards all the time and what
ever shows the most promise that will benefit our people, than it's
presented to general membership of the tribe for their consideration
and a vote by the tribes will take place to accept it or not. So far we have
done pretty well the right decisions that have created employment and
income for the tribes and with some help we can still survive.
At the present time we have a project to consider and an election on
the matter to decide if we want it or not. For one thing this project has
already created some jobs which employs around 25 people, and if the
membership accepts the project and to back it up this can open a field
of a great number of jobs for the tribal members. Men are always
complaining of lack of jobs, here is something to consider and go the
the poles and vote on the issue even for or against Because your vote
counts. If there isn't enough of a turn-out the whole thing will be
invalid. And each time there is a special election such as this it costs
the tribes a lot of bucks, and if there isn't a good turn out than there is
money down the drain. Consider it carefully because it could effect
your future. "AAH-NAH-CHI-TOON! ! !

News shared
To our family & friends of the
Community,
I would just like to share our
daughter Elvina's achievement with
you all who cares & loves her.
She is a 7th grader here in Everett,
WA and she had made the "Honor
Roll". We're very proud of her. She
has been a good student all through
her past grades and its great shes
trying her hardest, for her dream is to
be a teacher. She's had her hey-days
with "peer pressure" but shes proving
them wrong. I just keep reminding
her to 'ignore' the "gossip", they just
need someone to talk about, to make
their day. But, we do as her parents,
know shes going to make
"something" of herself.
Thank you for making us "Proud",
daughter.
Love you Dearly,
Lupe & Susan Coronado

The following girls have played
this season with the Lady Vols:
Taralce Suppah, Dcece Suppah, Amy
Suppah, Ambrosia Suppah, Rose
Kirk, Ivy Wallulatum, Lori Suppah,
Fawn Bcgay, Este Made, Orie Mae,
Ardis Smith, Roberta Thomas, Farrell
Lucei, Marissa Kalama, Melissa
James, Darlcne Frank and Annie
Greg. All toll, they have participated
in 11 tournaments; they have won
five, placed second three times and
placed third three times.
We are real proud of our
accomplishments and our efforts this
season. I am sometimes, as the coach,
too hard on the girls with my coaching
methods and I apologize for those
times to both the girls and their
parents. I have seen these girls come
from being the welcome mat at the
tournaments when they were 10 and
1 1 to doing what they are today. A
majority of the girls are doing
excellent work in school and their
personal lives. I hope that the Warm
Springs community realizes that it is
activities such as basketball that help
to curb a lot of the problems that
inactivity causes in our homes. I
appreciate all of the parents' help,
criticism and encouragement during
the season, because it is very time
consuming and costly to do this for
the kids. My hope for these kids is
that they graduate from high school
and grow up to contribute to our
community.
Thanks again, and here's hoping
for a good and safe off-season.

Poem reflects children's pain
To the editor,
I am submitting this poem to your newspaper with the hopes that
perhaps it may awaken people with power to stop injustices I see happening
to little innocent children due to drugs & alcohol.
The Giant Cover-up
I heard a child weeping, I heard a child cry.
I heard a mother swear and shout, I saw the curtains fly.
A little one in tattered clothes smelted dirty and unkept.
Beer cans were littered on the floor near places that she
slept
Lice and nits were in her hair, her gums bleeded, left
unbrushed.
Her brother cried out for fear, yet both of them were
shushed,
The parents, wanted babies so welfare would support-
Not children's food and clothing needs, but beer and
wine and snort.
Some babies are so much abused they die quite
needlessly
while hardened politicians let guilty parties free.
In far-off lands I've seen the same: malnourished children
hurt and shamed
considered less than nothing, pitiful and suffering.
They are the last to eat and nakedness they wear.
Adults will push them off a seat so they could have a
chair.
I wonder: are we looking? Do we listen when they cry?
is their helplessness of no concern that we let it pass us
by?
How long will children suffer?..in silence babies die?
This Giant Cover-up will grow in homage to the lie
Aslongasthose with power who know, let guilty ones slip
by.

To the editor,
My family had the honor and
blessing of attending the Root Feast
held earlier this month. We want to
thank the people of the Confederated
Tribes and our good friend Ken Smith,
for inviting us and allowing us to eat
with you on this very special and
sacred occasion.
You shared with us the most sacred
of Earth Mothers gifts. The water and
foods that have nourished the
ancestors and people of these lands
for hundreds of generations filled
our bellies, warmed our hearts, and
nourished our souls unlike any food
we have ever tasted. To this day I can
still feel theCamish, Yamish, Koush,
Salmon, Bitterroot, Huckleberry and
Chokecherries filling my belly
almost as if they had left an indelible
mark in the center of my being.
I do not understand the language
of the ancient songs, yet the visions
and drum beat still reside in my heart.
In all of my life I have never been
involved in anything that has
provoked such strong emotions and
had such a lasting impact as the root
feast had on me. I am forever grateful
that we were able to attend and that
my young boy. Clay, was able to
witness and taste the beauty that
comes with walking a path of respect
and sacredness.
We hope and pray the Great Spirit
will smile upon the Warm Springs
community and will bless the people
wiui good fortune and strength in the
seasons ahead. Thank you again, from
my family to yours.
