The Warm Springs Columbia
River Bears Girls 12 & Under Bas
ketball Tournament was held on
March 4, 5, & 6, 1994 at the Warm
Springs Community Center with
eight teams vying for championship.
This was inconjuction with the Li'l
Bears Girls 10 & Under Basketball
Tournament going on at the same
time., which also had eight teams
participating. The themes for the
tournaments were "Stay In School"
& "Don't Foul Out, Stay In School".
Following are the results of the 12
& Under Tournament: Champion
ship went to Red Swan, Runner-up
was the host team Columbia River
Bears, Third place went to Mission
from Pendleton, OR, Fourth place
went to Harrah Cougarettes of
Harrah, WA. Harrah also was selected
for the Sportsmanship award.
The Individual awards are as fol

The Warm Springs Recreation De
partment is sponsoring the Kah-nee-ta
Mini Marathon, and it is scheduled for
April 9, 1994. The starting time for all
races is at 10:00 a.m. except for the
14.S mile run which will start at 9:00
a.m. at Simnasho, Or . All races will
end at the Kah-Nee-Ta Village
The pre-registration is 8:00 a.m. to
5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, at
the Community Center office. Regis
tration will be from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00
a.m. at the Kah-Nee-Ta Village Pavil
ion.. The bus will leave for Simnasho
at 8:15 a.m..
The different categories are by age
groups, 60 and over, 50-59, 40-49, 30
39, 19-29, 14-18, and 13 and under.
The course for the 14.5 mile run
will begin at Simnasho and blend into
rolling hills with two major hills on the
course. All blacktop from start to
Finnish. There will be water stations
along the way located at4.0, 8, 9.8, and
12 mile mark.
The 10K will be flat and blend
into rolling hills with the turn
around point on the main road.
Water stations will be at 1.5 and 3
mile mark.
The 3.0 mile run will be all pave
ment and the turn around point will
be on the main road. Water stations
will be at the 1.5 mile turn around.
And the 1.0 Fun RunWalk will be
all pavement.
The awards will in include for
the winner of the 14.5 for both men
and women's division to receive a
1 night stay at the Kah-Nee-Ta
Lodge plus a Jogging outfit All
entries will receive a T-shirt, and a
Raffle Ticket. lst-3rd place male
Female in all age divisions in the
14.5, 10K and 3 mile will receive
medals. Raffle prizes will be a va
riety of items

Reservation Relay scheduled for May 7
I've been invited to participate in
the International Sports Exchange
(ISE) Basketball Tournament in
Beijing, China. Our team is made up
of athletes and coaches throughout
Oregon.
We will be leaving Portland
International Airport July 4,and will
return July 13,1994.
I am very glad to have this chance
The seventh annual reservation
relay is scheduled for May 7, at the
Kah-Nee-Ta Vacation Resort
The Warm Springs Recreation
Department and the Kah-Nee-Ta
Vacation Resort are co-sponsoring
the Relay which will cover 58 miles
in length. They are inviting all teams
to come and compete in the 7th annual
Reservation Relay, where the run will
start and end at the Kah-Nee-Ta
Resort.
Teams will consist of five (5)
runners each.except Juniors who may
use Seven (7). All teams will alternate
legsof 4.0 miles, (Y ouths at 3.0 miles)
each. Exchange points will be marked
clearly. Each team must run their
runners alternately in the same
sequence. Teams will have maps and
course descriptions and are
responsible for directing their
runners. Any runners off course will
have to resume where they left the
course. All teams must carry their
own watch and score card and keep
their own leg times. Please, use only
one vehicle to each team and display
a team name sign on that vehicle.
The course will be 58 miles in
length, and will have some tough
legs along the course. Most of the
course is very simple with rolling
hills and a lot of flat surfaces. The
first third will be on pavement, the
second third is on gravel, and the last
third on pavementgravel
combination. A lot of scenic beauty
will be seen along the way.

Car crash fatality:
Officers along with EMS person
nel responded to Jackson Trail Road
RL 24 between mile markers 7 & 8
during the early morning hours of
Saturday, March 19, Just prior to 5
a.m. on a reported vehicle rollover
with someone pinned underneath.
Arriving at the scene, officers
found a female later identified as 23
year old Jolie Suppah dead at the
scene.
The preliminary investigation
showed that the '79 Mercury four
door station wagon was travelling
south when it ran off the west side of
the road; came back on the highway,
and then went off the east side of the
road striking a large rock causing it
to overturn.
Alcohol and vehicle speed appear
to be a determining factor to the
crash as the investigation continues.
Handgun attempted to be smuggled
into Jail
A routine search of various items
of an inmate's property entering the
jail resulted in the startling discovery
of a loaded.22 cal semi-automatic
handgun.
In most recent public information
fairs, various items were on display
from the Corrections division as
paraphernalia, weapons, and miscel
laneous items have been seized over
the past year.
Everything from homemade tat
too instruments, weapons to lighters,
to the smuggling in of a VHS tape
filled with chewing tobacco for a
juvenile has been attempted to pass
the watchful eyes of the corrections
officer.
WSPD now has Drug Dog:
In keeping with the community's
demand on "total war on drugs", the
Warm Springs Police Department
swore in a new officer this past week.
Officer "Jody" joins the ranks of the
WS Drug Task Force Team.
Jody, a registered full blooded
black lab retriever, age 21 months .
was recruited from the Cedar Home
Kennel Narcotics Detection Service:
who is trained to detect marijuana,
cocaine, hashish, methamphetamine,
heroin and crack cocaine.

Holliday recently completed a two
week training session in Stanwood,
WA where he met "Jody" and began
his intense (80) hour training course.
Bubba & Jody were trained to
sniff vehicles, buildings, luggage,
lockers, storage facilities and cur

members suspected of selling, push
ing or using drugs are encouraged to

tournament as the Warm Springs
Public Safety team "Red Heat I" fin
ished fourth in their first actual
tournament play.

ever thought that the team could or
should have been in the champion
ship bracket losing game two in
second round play.
Eight teams began the tournament

In game one, Chief Courtney ex
pressed that he was suppose to be
relaxing for the weekend which
started out in a very tense game as
team Red Heat faced Satus in the
opening round. Final score was 123
to 120.
In game two, Mackie Begay was
ejected from the game in a contro
versial call by the game referee which
set the tone for the rest of the game
as Red Heat lost to Goldendale 96 to
127.

DUII Victim's Impact Panel
The next scheduled meeting of
the Victim's impact Panel will be
held on Monday, April 18th, 1994 at
the Senior Citizen Center.
All members of the community
are invited to attend. Let's work to
gether to help put a stop to drunk
driving in our community.
Defensive Driving
More than 40300 people lose their
lives in motor vehicle crashes each
year and a million more suffer dis
abling injuries, according to the Na
tional Safety Council. The triple
threat of high speed, impaired driv
ing and not using occupant restraint
threatens every driver, regardless of
how careful or how skilled.
Driving defensively means not
only taking responsibility for your
self and your actions, but also keep
ing an eye on "the other guy." The
National Safety Council suggests the
following guidelines to help reduce
your risk on the road:
1. ) Don't leave the driveway
without securing each passenger in
the car, including children and pets.
Safety belts save thousands of lives
each year!
2. ) Remember that driving too
fast or too slow can increase the
likelihood of collisions.
3. ) Don't kid yourself. If you plan
to drink, designate adriver who won't
drink. Alcohol is a factor in almost
half of all fatal motor vehicle acci
dents. 4. ) Be alert! If you notice that a
car is straddling the center line,
weaving, making wide turns, stop
ping abruptly Of responding slowly
to traffic signals, the driver may be
impaired.
5. ) Avoid an impaired driver by
slowing down, letting the driver pass,
pulling onto the shoulder or turning
at the nearest corner. If it appears that
an oncoming car is crossing into your
lane, pull over to the roadside, sound
the horn and flash your lights.
6. ) Notify the police immediately
after seeing a motorist who is driving
suspiciously.
7. ) Follow the rules of the road.
Don't contest the "right of way" or
try to race another car during a merge.
Be respectful of other motorists.
8. ) While driving, be cautious,
aware and responsible.

Personnel Report:
Public Safety welcomes new and
old faces to the branch as the reorga
nization is in full swing. Joining the
branch comes the Juvenile
Coordinator's Office, Court Admin
istration, Legal Aid and Parole and
Probation.
In the police ranks, welcome goes
to Sasheen Smith and Tammy
Kalama. Smith was hired as a dis
patcher and Kalama returned to the
Corrections Division of which both
will look forward to the Academy
training down the road.
Graduating from the Oregon Po
lice Academy Correction school was
Debbie Zamora who completed the
intense training offered during the
past five weeks. Also graduating from
the Police Course is Corey Clements
who completed her eight week course
this last Friday. Congratulations to
both of you.
March Public Relations:
March marked a very busy month
as staff & officers presented them
selves and their respective depart
ments to the community and Central
Oregon.
The month started out- with the
Kids Carnival held at the community
center, followed by the Simnasho
Jamboree, Honor Senior Citizen's
Day and the Central Oregon Law
