After a 12-year absence, area children can once again attend school close to home. No longer will children be subject to three hours on a bus each day. The new one-room school house, located directly behind the former school building, . opened its doors to nearly 20 anxious children. Opening was traditional with Seven-Drum services and a blessing by Shaker Church members. Following ceremonies were lunch and speeches at the Simnasho Longhouse. Over 100 community members attended the event, including School District Superintendent Phil Riley and board member Bette Wallan. A new school in Simnasho has long been the dream of area parents and children. Through cooperation between the Tribe and the District, that dream is now a reality. Spouse abuse is the use or threat of physical violence by the abuser to gam control and power over the vic tim. Although either partner may be the victim, most victims are women. The three types of spouse abuse (physical abuse, sexual violence and psychologicalemotional abuse) of ten occur in combination. Physical Abuse includes kicking, hitting, biting, choking, pushing and assault with weapons, victims may have difficulty preventing or escap ing physical abuse because, very of ten, the factors that keep them in the relationship also keep them from re porting or documenting the abuse, victims stay in physically abusive relationships for many reasons. Some victims stay because they blame themselves, believe the abuse will stop, are financially dependent, or fear that they or their children will be seriously injured or killed if they attempt to leave. Victims also stay because they have, or feel they have, noother place to go (Crites and Coker 1988). Sexual Violence or "Marital Rape" is forced sexual activity. Is an act of violence and aggression in which sex is the method used to hu miliate, hurt, degrade and dominate the partner. PsychologicalEmotional Abuse is more than verbal arguments; it is the systematic destruction of an individual's self-esteem. Perpetrators of psychologicalemotional abuse may be involved in the following practices: Economic Domination. Fre quently, men who abuse attempt to control their partners by having complete power over the household finances. Using Children. Often, abusers use the children to maintain power and control their partners. Intimidation. Frighten their vic tims by using looks, actions, ges tures, or loud voices; by smashing things; or by destroying their victims' property. Threats. Threaten to take the chil dren away from their spouse, to harm the children, or to commit suicide. Such threats add to the anxiety and fear experienced by victims and children. Extreme Controlling Behavior. Men who abuse may control their ! artners' activities, companions and riends and whereabouts. Isolation. Abusers often control what their victims do, whom they see, and where they go. Many abus ers feel very threatened by anyone with whom their victims have contact. Spouse abuse is a complex prob lem with so many variations that it cannot be explained by one theory or one underlying cause. Among the many factors that may contribute to its occurrence are learned behavior, trial-and-error learning, and sub stance abuse. Family violence can harm any one, from the unborn child to the elderly adult. Research findings un derscore the seriousness and com plexity of the problem. Itaffects many thousands of people, takes many forms, has multiple cause, and is not easily solved, the damaging effects of family violence are found to con tribute to other individual, family and social problems.
