This world is so mixed up with all sorts of bad things, if there are any good things we don't realize it until its too late. My friend, my Co-worker, Marsha She wczyk... I was blessed with a person of great qualities only to be short lived. A perfec tionist, a person of her own ways always there when needed. Sometimes things were not at the right time but she always altered her schedule to fit what was on hand. Marsha was born in Salem, Or egon, lived her life in Oregon. She attended North Salem high school, received her degree in journal ism at the University of Oregon, in Eugene. Marsha took her place with Spilyay Tymoo, in 1980, as a ReporterPhotographer and later assumed the full responsibility as the Dark Room Specialist and Feature Writer. Marsha loved to be out of doors which made it perfect for her to cover the Natural Resources projects here on the reservation. Photo graphing Sports events both here in Warm Springs and Madras was one of her favorite activities along with all the Powwows and other activities that took place here. Well, Warm Springs and I, have lost a very good friend on Friday evening October 22, 1993, in an auto accident on the south side of Madras. A vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed crossed over the yellow line and struck her head-on. She will really be missed by many, many friends and associates around the area. Sales Tax Issue Legal Aide client!, Today, Friday, October 15, 1993, the Legal Aid (LA) department was required to attend the third quarter Human Services IHS Branch awards luncheon. The telephone calls for the department were forwarded to the Tribal Main Office Front Desk so the LA staff would have a record of who called and then could return calls to the clients. The Front Desk was do ing the LA office a favor by covering our calls. An incident occurred which was totally uncalled for and with which I am not too happy about. A person called and then got an gry at the receptionist because the call was not being directed straight to LA staff. The person yelled, "I have been trying to contact LA for over a month and the staff is always out of the office." I am not sure why that person decided to "dump" on a re ceptionist who didn't have any con trol over LA. All the caller did was take it out on the wrong person and then slammed the phone down on the receptionist. The did not even have the "guts" to defend their actions by leaving their name. My question to that caller is just what do you think you accomplished by mistreating the receptionist, all you did was to make her job harder and possibly ruin her day. The Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs docs not hire any one to be'verballv and emotionally abused. Legal Aid sure did not ask the Front Desk to help us so they could be mistreated. If a person has a problem with LA staff or LA policies they need to come to mc, I am the person who can deal with the problem. I realize some people yell at me thinking it will solve something but usually it docs not really create a good impression of that person. It also makes it harder to see things from that person's stand point. There are ways to take care of a problem but yelling at a Tribal employee is a practice which I will not accept as a way to treat my staff. Tribal employees are human and should be treated with respect If you want respect you need to give re- Thanks for support during illness spccL Yelling docs not gain respect. Legal Aid docs its best in serving the public and the community I would like to think people would be more respectful or at least half civil in their contact with this department. 1 The public needs to remember there are three staff in the LA office, a secretary and two advocates. There are times when both advocates are in court and out of the office and the secretary and the staff receive train ing and this also takes them out of the office. There are going to be times when calls arc transferred and re member if you call, the person taking our calls is only helping LA. They are not responsible for the fact the staff is not in the office. Help LA by treating people who answer our telephone with respect and dignity. To the editor, The family of Dclbcrt "Wilalik" Frank, Sr. would like to thank those who came to the Shaker Church last weekend to help out and be support ive to our dad and us. It's been very hard on us to see our dad ill. He's always been a strong person to us and in the community. Thanks to the true, dedicated shakers who came to lend their work: Mr. and Mrs. Lucci, Louise Hcllon, Barbara Bobb, Mrs. Louis Lcclaire, to name a few. Plus all the aunts, uncles, grandchildren, and brothers-in-law who all came together to help make this gathering a success. It helped lighten our hearts and burden seeing everyone working together because of their love for our dad. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. By Sunday Dad was like he used to be or what we're used to seeing him like laughing, visiting, talk ing, telling stones, etc. Tentative plans for another shake is piannco tor uctobcr 22-24. Hope To the editor, ' to see you there. Sorry Patricia Leno-Baker Legal Aid Supervisor Myrna Ferguson, Priscilla Ike, Carol Parra, and the rest of the family. I would like to apologize to my family for my actions on June Is, 1993. Floyd C. Frank, Sr. Poopsie, Would you believe it's been 24 years but we lost 2. Still the years we had can never be taken away. Good or bad we had them together. Happy Anniversary on October 22nd. Love always, your family Warriors walk To the editor, It is a pain in the neck when ever the taxes are the main subject in legislation, however there are both pro and con effects felt by the public. The issue is something that the citizens must really consider as this uill mmt im Hnrino f1frtirn thic vnr ' . . Measure 1, has its good points and some bad points. The money partlCiPQtlOD UrOQu idiacu uy uk j o auc ia is ucuibaicu iu uic suiuuis ucic in vjrcguu. It is very clear the schools don't have adequate funds each year. There have been cut-backs on employment, lack of space where all class rooms are over crowded. One thing Measure 1 does is it deletes school operating property taxes on homes and for another thing Measure 1 is only on a trial basis and if the people feel it's doing well or not it will be voted on again in 1998, to decide ifit is acceptable ornot. Measure 1 would cut property taxes and direct some Lottery money to schools and create a state spending cap. A Marion County Judge granted an injunction against Measure 1, ruling it was unconstitutional which it covers several issues for one vote. The following day the Oregon Supreme Court issues a temporary stay of the judges ruling. There will be arguments on the issue and all sides will be heard before a decision is made. At present the issue will continue. , Well lets see...all who are opposed to the sales tax say Measure 1, violated Article X V 1 1 , Section 1 , of the Oregon Constitution. That all amendments should be submitted separately and voted on likewise. This would prevent the measure of deceiving or confusing the Voters. However the latest reports say the issue will be on the ballot come election day. Frank family sends condolences To the editor, The enure Frank family would like to send our condolences to Valcna Sargent, her children and family in the loss of their grandmother (mom). Valcna is always helping our family in times of need. We saw how much she loved her grandmother and we know how much she'll miss her World Series As the World Series got underway this year it was sort of a relief that the Atlanta Braves were beaten out to compete in the series. This gave us real Indians the chance to sit and relax , enjoy the games and not be embarrassed by the AIM group who undoubtedly would have been demonstrating outside of the stadium over the Atlanta Tomahawk chop. Action such as this is senseless and foolish and for what? Some people don't have nothing better to do than sit around all day thinking of what they can do to hurt other people. AHH-NAH-CHI-TOON! ! ! He learned from the best of 'em, from jumping horses to ropin' calves, and just trying to make that eight second ride. He passes it on down the line, from Larry Mahan to young kids whom he can't seem to recall but who's survived many of the falls. He chased that white line down the road, from small ones like Prineville to the big one at Cow Palace. Praying he'd get the next bronc rode, and to walk away with a bigger billfold. With all the young kids riding the circuit, he wasn't getting any tougher, and the ground was getting a lot rougher. He went on back home, said it was time to retire. But every once in a while, he'd get the urge to roam and once again, he'd head on down that road. This hero of mine now walks with a gimp, and wears his dirty 'ol hat on the side. But he still has that sparkle in his smile and that glint in his eye. They say cowboys never die, they just grow older. So on this special day, I want to wish my hero the cowboy, my dad a Birthday wish on the day he turns a year older. But it isn't time to hang up the spurs- you still have a few weeks to go and a few good broncs to ride. At the National Old Timers Finals where you're going to have to show your Cowboy Pride. Lean back and kick 'em in the mane!! Make that eight second ride!! And how ever it turns out, you'll still be in my Fathers Hall of Fame!! Charli Green love and guidance. Valcna brought her grandma to the church last weekend during the shake we had for our dad. We en joyed her presence and smiles. We want Valcna to know our fam ily is always there for her. May God bless you and your children Valcna. Take care. The Frank family Child support appreciated To the editor, I want to commend and thank all the fathers who make regular child care payments on time to the tribal court. Including the father of my daughter, Amy. Thank you I appreci ate your help in helping raise our daughter. I could use more but am grateful for what you pay. But I've been having more trouble getting money from tribal court than from my daughter's father. Every month it's one excuse after another. How hard can it be to take it down to the Administration Building to be processed? Surely there has to be a better method or a faster way. If it was the fathers taking their time like this they'd be sitting before the judge in no time flat! The fathers who make these pay ments believe that their children are getting their money AS AP when they need it. Not when some secretary gets around to it or decides to do their job. You make plans and promises with your children with this money and when it's late it effects the kids. Myrna F. Ferguson Sunshine, October 11th, may it have been filled with a lot of sun rays. Belated but Happy Birthday. With love, Mom & family EDITOR'S NOTE Spilyay Tymoo welcomes articles and letters from it's readers.
