(The way it is)
Letters to the Editor
"Spifyay Spool
1 I Mm f .
One day as I drove down 1-5,
freeway from Portland to Salem,
and was a little worried of being
pulled over for traveling 65mph,
but found myself being left behind
as if I was standing still by the rest
of the traffic. Even those big rigs
went buzzing right past me and I
began to wonder why everyone
was in such a hurry.
Well, it dawned on me, Ah-
Huh," it was the time of the year
when the Legislative body passes
all those laws at the state Capitol
building in Salem. So I figured all
Legislatures from all parts of the
I state were zooming to Salem to
pass the 55 MPH law thats only in effect in the rural arcas...it appears.
I Some of the last legislation passed were sort oi stupid ana loonsn
in a sense. Like the 55 mph speed law. All those people live in the area
I where there are freeways and are not hampered witn tnc 55 mpn law.
Out here in the rural areas where the roads arc narrow and arc getting
more and more crowded, the 55 mph can be a pain on the Asphalt. It
takes one person who travels at a slow rate of speed and holds up the
traffic, and when he comes to a passing lane he speeds up to where the
rest of the traffic can't get passed and when he comes to the end of the
Ipassing zone he slows down again to cause another trail ic tie-up.
Then they say there are many fatal accidents on the highways
I because of speed. "You Bet Your Boots," It's because these guys who
hold up traffic won't pull over to let traffic pass are the vcrmit's that
I cause the speeding. Cars try to get around these guys and the line is too
long to get passed when he meets an on coming vehicle, and "El
ISmacko, cars smash into one another head-on, because people don t
Isee what really happens in the rural areas.
Once in a while you see a state cop have a person stopped on 1-5, 1
Ifigure it s the only one he could catch up to. Another stupid law passed
as the triple trailer ngs were allowed to travel on the highways. Like
; said before, things like this don't bother people in the metropolitan
area where there are all the freeways and don t have to put up with
tiese big rigs holding up traffic.
Again there are things that are in reverse, like the big rigs who
tost run down the passenger vehicles. Isn t it a law that they are
supposed to travel at a safe speed. There are some who pass almost
:very car on the highway and cause lot of uneasiness among tnc
tegular motorists. Just recently a big rig ran smack into the hind end
)f a passenger car in Central Oregon area killing two women because
lit couldn t stop of highway repairs.
Maybe if the cops would watch the big ngs that go shooting through
Ithis area endangering the public they might not be harassed by the
public of picking on the Hispanics or Native Americans and other
unonty groups.
Another thing is the way the state goes at improving the highways,
ley look just at the present and not down the road few years. Take the
improvement on the highway in Warm Springs, by the time they
complete this it will be time to imd a way to handle the trait ic load once
again. They should look down the road to the year 2030 or so and make;
reparation for that time, like a four-lane freevay from tnc top or the
;rade west of warm Springs clear past Bend on highway 26 and 97,
even if it would cost a juicy sum of money, but then they wouldn't have
ko be doing studies for improvements all along year after year...just
good common sense. AHH-NAH-CHI-TOON!!!
Land Marks destroyed
It's sad to see some of the old land marks being destroyed around
here on the campus area. Those old trees being cut down is like killing
Warm Spnngs. If they keep this up this won t seem like the Ole Warm
Springs most people know.
Yep! It just isn t Warm Springs without those old land marks. I ll
bet if the people of Warm Springs would have known those trees were
to be cut down there would nave Deen some strong opposition. iome
feel things like this should have been mentioned before hand on what 's
to take place. Just because someone comes in who doesn t know the
value of those land marks to many people here, comes along and cut
those trees down with out any feelings should be ran out of town
feathered. In the olden day's those trees have been there and have been
there for generations. Yun-Wi-MahM

CHS Program now under tribal management
To the editor,
The Contract Health Service
(CHS) of Warm Springs has under
gone some changes. We arc no longer
run by the Indian Health Service. As
of October 1, 1993, the CHS Pro-
fram is under Tribal management,
his new change means that there
will be a better relationship between
the CHS Program and the local health
care providers in the area.
This new change means that the
Tribe will pay your medical bills. We
will have the ability to "stretch" the
funds that we have while making
sure that (he care you receive will be
of high quality. In order to accom
plish this, there are several steps that
we need to take:
1. It is very important that if you
have an emergency health problem
and you go to one of the local hospi
tals, that you notify the CHS Pro
gram within 72 hours in order for us
to handle any changes for service.
2. If you go to any doctor or den
tists off the reservation, that you get
pre-authorization from your doctor
or dentist here at the clinic and from
the CHS office.
3. It is also important that you
