The big traffic tie-ups everyday from a Job of street im provements that should have been completed last July. ; The street by Macy'i Market must be a Multi-Million dollar street for the period of lime it has taken to complete the job. Well, let's look at what's happened so far...scems the crew would gather on the street by Macy's and stand around for a couple of day's and all rush down to the junction to the Shitike Creek road and tear up everything and stand around either admiring what they did or wonder . what to do next Then they would rush back up to Macy's Market and : spend a couple of day 's there as though they were wondering what they ' should do next It appears that there should have been better planning on how to handle the whole situation before they went and tore up everything to cause such a big problem with the traffic around here. To . make things worse they had the traffic going around on Highway 26, either to get to and from the store and post office. At the same time construction started on the street turn-off from highway 26, which doubled the problem. People going all the way around just to get to the post office. Its a wonder that no one got plastered by one of them big rigs that go shooting through because of the street closure. Traffic mixing with the traffic of highway 26 made things even more a problem. Tourists getting upset over the whole thing. . The streets have always been a problem around here all along. We need more streets connecting with highway 26, like another street west of the campus area. The East Tcnino addition was one of the best moves made in a long time but still we need maore access to highway 26, because any little tie-up cripples the whole community especially during the hot part of the season where it's miserable sitting in the hot sun. ' :' The flagmen shouldn't get any blame for all the traffic tie-ups, because they are only doing what they are told to do and that's to stop all the traffic, and regulate the flow of traffic to where there wont be any big tie-ups. Well, if we all keep our fingers crossed the whole situation will soon be over and Everyone Will Live Happily Everafter. To the people of Warm Springs Recently, during a search and res cue operation on the Mctolius River, my husband, Keith Baker, was seri ously injured. Most people read about the incident in the Bend Bulletin or heard it on the news of KWSO and KWJJ, 103 Country. He and his 4-H crew were on a search with the Warm Springs Search and Rescue. He was finished for the day and the raft, used to work the Mctolius River for the lost kayakcr, was loaded on a pickup. Keith was in back securing the oars as the pickup left the area. A branch hanging over the road hit him in the left temple. The splinter that entered his head was over six inches long and was three quarters of an inch in diameter. The splinter entered at the temple and went in under the skin outside of his skull, turned and went down un der the check, from there under his lower jaw.down into the neck, itsplit before it hit a major muscle with the two ends slopping at the carotid ar tery. Keith was Air Lifted to St. Charles and after reaching the trauma center it was determined the injury was so serious that he needed to be Air Lifted to the trauma center at Emanuel Hos pital in Portland. He was operated on the next morning. The doctor flushed the wound and pulled the splinter, much the same as a mother removed a sliver from her child. The wound had to be irrigated to flush out any dirt or particles of wood. There is damage to his face but the only sign of the injury is a scar on his left temple area. He was blessed that day because if the splinter had en tered a fraction of an inch different he could have died. It is going to be six months to a year before the healing is over and the pain gone. My husband and I would like to thank the people of Warm Springs who were there when we needed them. RaNcva Dowty, Fire Chief made certain he was taken by Air Life and her decision saved his life and she made sure everyone in our family was informed. The members of his crew Canku Smith and Vic Switzlcr stayed by him until he left Bend. The Sl Charles crew and the Air Life people took care of him during a very rough lime. I know that I did not let everyone know what had happened and I do apologize. Luke, Pixie and I were so intent on getting to Portland to be with him. The Warm Springs SAR and Jefferson County SAR made sure all of his belongings were cared for and returned. I thank them. They also called and kept close contact on his condition. We thank the people who called and sent cards. There are not enough words to thank all of the people who prayed for his safety and his life. Sonya Kcnyon was her own special self with prayers and allowing us the use of her van. Bob and Kathy Whittcnburgc, gave us very special assistance at a time of need, we thank you. To the Legal Aid staff: Tyrone Ike, Barbara Jim, and Marti Wells, I thank them for their care and con cern, and they kept the Legal Aid office going. I would also like to thank: my boss Gaylc Rodgcrs who made it possible for mc to leave; Colleen Smith, Ken Smith who helped to lessen our worries. I would like to thank Mark Foster, of Camp Sherman, for all that he did. The Warm Spring Rodeo Club members were there during and after the incident. Valeric Squicmphcn and her mom Rita made sure that my Blazer was taken to the police de partment, it seems when I was told he was injured I left bingo without my car keys and left the Blazer at the Longhousc. All of the 4-H Search and Rescue cadets for the ir calls and cards. Thank you. I just want to thank everyone for the care, concern, cards, prayers and assistance. I know that I have not named all of you wonderful people but you are in our prayers. We arc very proud to be a member of the Warm Springs community to be able to call the people our friends and neighbors. Sincerely, Patricia Leno-Baker PS Luke and Pixie also express thanks to all of you. Camp beneficial to many I : Here for the past couple of months there seems to be quite a commotion on racial problems, especially in the Madras, Oregon, area where it appears the Police Force is always harrassing the Minority groups. - No matter what route taken on this problem Predijuce comes hobbling to the top. Each time you see the overheads blinking on a cop Car you wonder what Minority group is being stopped. They talk about gang related problems arising here in Madras and it appears more and more so...only the gangs are the Police against the Minority groups. They say gang members all wear the same kind of clothes to distin guish what gang they belong to....well the police all wear the same kind of matching clothes, makes them like the "Crips," or "Bloods." Wouldn't you think? "Oh Well," What would we do with out the Police force. Any time there is problems stirring up they are always behind you. Sometimes far, far behind, but they are behind you. I guess they try to do their duty, like the Texans say, "Like Steers, they try." AHH-NAH-CHI-TOONH! Grandma, Happy Birth day to you. Your children are in the best hands possible when at this camp. They are taught respect for them selves, and others, their flag, com munity, and country. They learn life skills and how to work together. Yes, there were mosquitoes and several days of cold rainy weather, but activities never stopped and I never heard any child express a wish to be any where else. The kids built a sweat lodge and shelter. They went swimming and bathed daily in the creek.
