This summer's weather may not have been
the greatest for outdoor activities, but it sure
was great for gardening. The cooler
temperatures and extra rainfall made for ideal
growing conditions, causing gardens to
produce as never before.

Alvis Smith, Sr.'s ten-year-old nectarine tree was loaded with beautiful, dark-colored
fruit this year. Alvis says the tree has produced fruit only once before.

New director joins COCC staff
The new director for the Warm
Springs Central Oregon Community
College Education Center is John
Hicks. He is a Canadian, who, for the
last 30 years, has lived in Oregon.
John's association with Central Or
egon reaches back 20 years in area
wood products manufacturing. Prior
to moving to Central Oregon he
taught and coached primarily at the
high school level in both private and

proposed BadgerCedar timber sale
The Department of Natural Resources is asking for com
ments on a proposed timber sale for the BadgerCedar
Logging Unit. This area is located in the west-central part of
me reservation with Cedar Creek flowing east through the
sale. These comments are for a draft project assessment
(PA). The deadline to comment on the proposed Badger
Cedar Draft P. A. is September 23, 1 993. For more informa

tion of the challenges faced in an
educational setting and in the world
of work.
John has only been on site since
September 7 but in that hectic week
he has been involved in a two-day
education retreat at HeHe Longhouse
and numerous trips to the college for
training. He is very appreciative of
the gracious reception and support
he has already received. All transi
tions are taxing but the warmth of the
response by the Warm Springs
community he has met thus far has
done much to ease the strain.
The Center is open from 8 a.m. to
5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Please come by and introduce your
self to John. By the way, registration
for fall classes is underway an
added incentive for dropping in to
the Education Center.

nurse practitioner. Nakamura is in
the office between 8 and 1 1 a.m. on
Mondays and between 8 a.m. and 5
p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays.'
Potampa is in between 1 0 a.m. and 7
p.m. on Mondays, Tuesday, Thurs
days and Fridays. The clinic is not
open on weekends. Jackie George
and Susan Domingucz are clinic
nurses while Kathleen Pratt and
Adriana Ward work in the reception
area.

Help for sorrow available
A Bereavement Recovery Semi
nar intended for people who have
lost someone through death whether
recently or some time ago is being
sponsored by Mountain View Hos
pice. The free six week series will
begin September 30 and run through
November 4.
Great pain and many changes oc
cur when you lose a loved one and
bitterness and ill health can result.
People in acute grief have a hospital
ization rate six times that of the
general population. Divorce will oc
cur within one year for 50-80 of
those couples who lose a baby.
Prolonged grief makes it difficult
to resolve liter losses. However, with
support and growth through grief,
healing is possible without these un
wanted side-effects. Each weekly
meeting will provide information that
serves as a building block for the
next session, as well as opportunity
for discussion, questions, and fel
lowship. I
The weekly 1 12 hour sessions
will be held in Mountain View
Hospital' lower level multipurpose
room beginning at noon. ;

Central Oregon artists asked to submit works
COCC director John Hicks
Central Oregon artists are invited
to submit original artwork for the
juried exhibition, "Celebrating Cen
tral Oregon," to be held November
12, 1993 April 18, 1994, in the
new Airport Terminal at Roberts
Field in Redmond, Oregon. The
opening reception will be held at the
Airport Terminal from 6:00 p.m.
8:30 p.m. on Friday, November 12,
1993. Artists are invited to attend.
The theme of the exhibition is
"Celebrating Central Oregon." Art
work with a natural, cultural or his
torical theme.
Jurors are: Carol Gardner,
Vandcvcrt Ranch, Graphic Designer,
Virginia Riggs, Redmond Oregon
Arts Commissioner; and Brian
Weber, High Desert Museum Man
ager of ExhibitsDesign.
Rules of entry
Artist must be a Central
Oregon Tri-County resident.
Artist may submit two
pieces of work. Also, photographs of
one or two additional works will be
accepted for consideration as reserve
items.
All work must be original,
and have been completed in the last
two years.
Each artist must include a
one-page resume that contains: name,
address, home & work phone, media,
education, other exhibits or honors,
and information providing insight
into his or her works.
The jurors have requested to jury
this exhibit from the original work.
Pieces may be hand delivered to Hill
Studio, Etc. 422 SW Sixth Street,
Redmond, On October 22 or 23, 1993,
between the hours of 1 1:00 a.m. and
3:00 p.m.
Pieces not accepted into the juried
exhibition may be picked up on No
vember 5 or 6, 1993, at the same
location, between the hours of 1 1:00
and 3:00 p.m.
Pieces not sold at exhibition may
be picked up at the Airport Terminal
on April 1 8 or 1 9, 1 994, between the
hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
Artwork will be insured for up to
60 of the indicated sale value while
on exhibition. Insurance in transit is
the responsibility of the artist.
All work must be for sale. (40
commission on sales will be rei
served.) Artist is responsible for any
necessary shipping of sold art. '
