How to treat cuts and scrapes in
Summer outings and adventures
can be lots of fun but they can also
become situations for accidents or
injuries. If you or someone you're
with gets a cut or a scrape, you may
need to treat these minor injuries
yourself. Following is some infor
mation to help you do that.
Most small wounds do not need
medical attention from your doctor.
For minor injuries, take these steps:
-Stop the bleeding by applying
pressure with a clean cloth or tissue.
The exception to this is a puncture
wound (from a nail, needle or other
long sharp object). In this case, the
wound should be allowed to bleed
initially as part of the cleansing pro
cess. -If possible, elevate the wound
above the heart level to slow the
blood flow.
-Guard against infection by
cleaning the wound and keeping it
clean. Cleanse a scrape or cut by
swabbing gently with a clean wet
cloth or holding the injured part un
der cool running water.
You may use soap in the area, but
try to keep it out of the wound itself,
since soap can damage tissue.
-If there are dirt particles clinging
to a scraped shin or elbow, remove
them with tweezers (wash the twee
zers first and dip the tips in alcohol).
-If the wound is on a finger or
hand, and thus likely to get dirty, or
if the area needs protection, an ad
hesive bandage is in order.
-Once the wound has been cleaned
and bandaged, that is really all you
need to do. Most wounds heal in a

Use of antiseptics
Some people feel they should use
antiseptic to clean a wound, but rub
bing alcohol, iodine and similar
products can damage skin. If you feel
you have to use something, make it
alcohol; iodine can burn your skin
under a tight bandage. Be wary of
any product that claims to "speed" or
"promote" healing; none can.
Hydrogen peroxide can also dam
age the outer layer of skin, thus re
tarding healing. Water is better for
washing the wound.
Keeping the wound dry and ex
posed In most instances, the wound will
heal better if you can remove the
bandage. A scab helps protect the
area from infection and should be
allowed to fall off by itself.
For certain serious wounds cover
ing a large area, moisture can aid
healing and prevent scabbing which
in turn decreases the risk of scarring.
New flexible bandages that are
transparent and waterproof have been
designed to retain moisture around
the wound and protcc t it from bacteria
and dirt. They don 't slick to the wound
itself. Consisting of a clear square of
plastic adhesive, these bandages arc
sold in drugstores. Though fairly
expensive, these bandages may also
be useful for certain small wounds
and abrasions.
What's the best kind of bandage?
Plain adhesive strips are usually
best, and come in a wide variety of
shapes and sizes. Old-fashioned ad
hesive tape and sterile gauze are less

When should I call a doctor or go
to the emergency room?
In the instance of a serious wound,
you should seek medical attention.
That may be necessary if the bleed
ing comes in spurts, which could
indicate that an artery has been cut,
and you may not be able to stop the
bleeding. Cover the wound with a
folded soft cloth, and, if possible,
elevate it above heart level. Press
directly on the cloth over the wound
to help stop the blood flow.
Seek medical attention also if any
of the following exists:
-The cut is very deep or jagged. A

A: School starts August 3 1st this
year. In mid-August you will be con
tacted about what class your child
will be in, when parent orientation
will be and what you need to complete
before your child can attend.
Q: What do I need to do to have a
completed registration packet for my
child?
A: You must complete and sign a
registration packet that includes: in
formation and authorization form,
consent and release of medical infor
mation form and the parent qucslion

up-to-date immunization certificate
is required. And proof of income

Day Full Day Program?
A: Currently there are no slots
available. If you are interested in the
Full Day Program you can contact
Sue or Versa to have you child's
name put in the full day recruitment
pool. When a slot bccomcsavailable,
the following criteria is used in se
lecting the child to fill the slot:
1 . Ability to pay or qualify for the
CCDBG and or AFS.
2. Both or single parent(s) or
guardian(s) are 80 employed, or
actively involved in a verifiable
training or education program.
3. No past due child care bills or
outstanding accounts from any pre
vious Early Childhood Education
service.
4. Child's name, date of birth,
parentguardian name, current ad
dress & phone number must be sub
mitted to have child placed in the
ECE recruitment pool.
5. Completed contract, registra
tion packet, up to date physical form
and immunization certificate.
6. A commitment from parents
guardians that the child will attend
on a regular basis. That is 85 of the
time or 1 7 out of 2 1 days per month.

Hintsala enlists in U.S. Army

the U.S. Army's Delayed Entry
Program (DEP), and will report for
active duty June 8, 1994.
Hinisala attended Madras High
School. He will take basic and ad
vanced individual training at Ft.
Knox, Kentucky. Hintsala has chosen

of rabies cases in household animals
(dogs and cats) has gone down over
the last 30 to 40 years. B ut, the number
of rabies cases in wild animals
(skunks, raccoons, foxes and bats)
has gone up. Outside the United
States, dogs and cats arc still a major
rabies problem.
Most cases of human rabies occur
after a bite by an animal who has
rabies. A scratch can also transfer the
disease, or a wound can be infected
by the animal's saliva. Any animal
bite, scratch or wound should be
quickly cleaned with soap and water.
