Groundbreaking ceremonies, conducted July 17, 1992, marked the beginning of construction of the new Warm Springs Health and Wellness Center. In just a few short weeks, the Center will open its doors for business it is a modem structure designed to meet the ever-growing health needs of a fast-growing community. A new health care facility has been in the works for several years. Council representatives have, over the past few years, testified before Congress that a new facility was badly needed. However, Warm Springs' needs were at the bottom of the Congressional priority list. A new building in Warni Springs would have to wait 1 0 to 15 years. A creative agreement, unlike any other, was struck among the Tribe, Indian Health Service and Congress. The IHS agreed to provide adequate manpower and equipment, with the help of Congressional appropriations, and the Tribe agreed to finance the construction of a new building. Tribal voters, in a February 1991 referendum election, approved a $1,250 million appropriation and authorized the borrowing of $3,750 million for construction. Also approved was another $800,000 to cover design, engineering, mechanical, electrical and landscaping costs. The 37,000 square foot Center will join numerous tribal health related programs and all IHS programs a union of services fash ioned to ease access to services. The IHS staff will consist of 85 while approximately 30 tribal employees will move their offices to the new building. Located just off Kot-num Road west of the Early Childhood Education Center, the building, through round, diagonally sec tioned windows, offers a panoramic view of the community and ML Jefferson. The intcriorfcatures, among other things, 24-foot ceilings in each of the three "pods", 1 1 examination rooms, six dental bays, a two-station emergency room and other amenities, including an improved pharmacy, an optical department and roomy computer work stations. Stressed from the beginning of inception has been partnership. The new facility strengthens the IMSTribal relationship, with each entity working toward a common goal a healthier community.
