The three children are enrolled members of the Con federated Tribes of Warm Springs. The oldest child, Debbie Mitchell, is 16 years old. She is a sophomore at Wapato High School. She received a 4.0 gpa the last semester. She enjoys choir, drama and some kind of math that Pat says she, herself, doesn't quite understand. She is also a member of the high school Indian Club. Visiting various colleges is helping Debbie decide which one she wants to attend when the time comes. Joseph and Allen Mitchell are students at the junior high school. Joseph, a seventh grader, enjoys choir, sports and each boy is a member of the school's Indian Club. Each is an "average" student, says Pat, with their report cards showing B's and C's. Safety Check Many people don't know about the injuries that can result from shaking a baby. There have been many tragic cases where babies were shaken to stop their crying. Great harm can be done to a baby or young child if they are shaken. Babies have weak muscles in their neck, so if they are shaken, their heads move back and forth rapidly. Parent Policy Council just finished revising their by-laws and will be assist ing the Head Start preschool program with their annual program evaluation, the SAVI (Self Assessment Validation Instrument). The SAVI is a tool all Head Start programs, nationwide, utilize as a process to see if their program is in compliance with federal guidelines. Parents, staff and community resources participate in the SAVI evaluation to verify that Warm Springs Head Start meets Head Start standards in the fol lowing areas: health, education, parent involvement, nutrition, mental health, social services and administration.
