There's a saying, "I'd rather be lucky than good" that could apply to the hundreds of professional cowboys that descend on the city each December. The Cowboys and Cowgirls have to be good to make it to the National Rodeo Finals...howevcr, once there, they might prefer luck to help them compete against the best in the world. The best wild horse racers in the world joined other world class cow boys for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association National Fi nals last month. When the dust had settled in the arena, one of the pe rennial powers in the event walked away with the title of 1992 National Finals Wild Horse Race Champion Team. The Jason Smith team won the average, and pocketed $ 1 ,993.75 for their efforts. Hailing from the Timber Region, the Jason Smith Team finished the year as Regional Champions with $6,287.25 in earn ings. At the National Finals, the Ja son Smith team won the 2nd Go, and C7 '23 JCrl ES3 r .i. , I,-,., f .-7 ' vv-JS' VJUr.-.,. ... "is-"'. . . ., v.iiiMrnt- Fast-paced wild horse race action is 13. Smith commented, "We had to earn it... we didn't place high all the time, but we were consistent." The team is comprised of Jason, MarkTobiasson of Cottage Grove and Dave Abbott, of Boring, Oregon. Jason finished third in the final 1992 National standings with earn ings of $11,814.71. The Bill Agin team from Santa Ynex, California won the World Championship title with earnings of $13,582.52 "We competed in around 18 rodeos this year, winning the wild horse race event in Pueblo, Colorado...Lewiston, Idaho.. ..St. Paul and Molalla, Oregon," Smith said. The National Rodeo Finals is not new to Jason Smith. Jason's team won the World Championship in 1985 and 1986. His team has placed in the top 3 in the world every year since then. It was the 7th trip to the National Finals for a Jason Smith team. When Jason started in wild and wooly event, he teamed up with his father, Buck Smith. In his 50s, Buck Smith still competes in the Wild Horse Race event, and still wins his share, often competing against his son. If that isn't enough to keep him occupied, Buck is also a stock con tractor, providing "wild horses from the Warm Springs Indian Reserva tion" fornumerous rodeos in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada, and California. Former World Champion, and World Champion contender Ja son Smith says, "My Dad kept me going in the sport." The Jason Smith team is consis tently one of the best in the world. He has refined wild horse racing to a science, and regardless of who is on the team. ..you can be assured they know what they are doing. But it doesn't hurt to be lucky...and Jason says his trip to Vegas included luck. His team won the average, and was named 1992 National Finals Cham pion Team... and "I won $420 at the blackjack table too." Jason not only knows Wild Horse Racing...but he knows how to the end 1992 and bring in the New Year! ri - - . ft" ,
