Smoke detectors provide warning, save lives
CBAHOE VOUH CLOCK
I
cKfinGEVOunennERV
Each year, thousands of people
needlessly die or arc injured in home
fires. Tragically.manyof them would
be alive or unharmed today had their
home been equipped with a working
smoke detector.
A working smoke detector cuts
the risk of dying in a home fire by
nearly half by providing an early
warning and critical extra seconds to
escape. The problem is that, although
82 percent of American homes have
smoke detectors, nearly one-third
don't work because of worn or miss
ing batteries.
To reduce and prevent home fire
tragedies in our community, Warm
Springs Fire and Safely has joined
forces with the International Asso
ciation of Fire Chiefs and Encrgizcr
batteries for a compelling and effec
tive national home fire safety cam
paign called "Change Your Clock,
Change Your Battery." Our message
is simple and potentially lifesaving:
change the batteries in your smoke
detector when youchangcyourclock
back from daylight-saving time.
To help you remember, at 6 p.m.
on Saturday, October 24, we will
activate emergency sirens of all kinds
throughout our community. As wc
sound the alarm on smoke detector
neglect, we will be among thousands
of other fire departments nationwide
participating in the country's first
national fire safety drill, "Operation
Check and Change".
When you hear the sirens, check
and change the batteries in your
smoke detectors and take a few other
fire safety prevention measures, such
as checking your smoke detector it
self by pushing the test button, plan
ning "two ways out" and practicing
these escape routes with your family.
Remember, "Change Your Clock,
Change Your Battery". It could save
your life.

Halloween safety tips offered
Costumes, candy, ghosts and
goblins...Hallowecn is almost here!
Ensure your children have a safe and
happy Halloween by using the fol
lowing tips:
Kids should always be accom
panied by an adult.
w Carry a flashlight.
w Only go to homes that are well
lit.
Never go into houses where
you do not know the occupants.
Props, (i.e. guns, swords,
knives) should be made out of
styrofoam or cardboard.
Jack-o-Lanterns with candles
should be placed away from any
flammable. Costumes:
Keep costumes simple. Long
and fancy ones may cause you to trip.
"Buy flame resistant costumes
or make them from flame resistant
material.
"Buy or make costumes of white
or light colored material, to be easily
seen at night
Reflectorized patches or strips
should be added to costumes or treat
bags.
Use non-allergic face paint in
stead of masks, which can block vi
sion. Wigs and hats should be worn
well off the face and be securely
fastened so they will not slip over
your face.
Wear regular street shoes.
Those homes who arc receiving
trick-or-treaters should remove any
thing that could cause children to trip
and fall.
Steps you take for a safe Hallow
een will be appreciated by all. If you
have any questions, please call Fire
and Safety at 553-1634.
