What's going to happen in No
vember? The elections arc just around
the comer and Bush and Clinton are
starting to shift into higher gears,
each trying to out do his opponent.
Bush trying to sway people to his
direction. Clinton with confidence
ready to challenge Bush to debates.
So far Bush is trying very hard to
avoid these public debates.
Bush is even trying to use the
draft record of Clinton during the
Vietnam War. Bush continually
mentions the Vietnam War, where to
many people was not a just war at all.
Some say it was just a big political
cover up for the big businessmen, to
retain the trade in the Far East. Just
like the Persian Gulf War, that was
over the oil fields in that country
benefiting the big oil producers. So I
don't think Clintons draft record will have any effect on the out come. There
were hundreds of thousands of young men also didn't make the draft for that
war. Canada's population increased from that.
"Ooops! ! ! What's this?" Ross Perot to re-enter the Presidential race. I just
hope that if Perot enters the race it will not have too much effect on the other
candidates chances. Perot may divide up the votes and we could end up with
lush again. To all eligible voters, better register and vote because you do
ount Vote one way or the othcr...bul vote. Ahh-Nah-Chi-Toon.

There's a Fourth!
Alvis Smith IV joined three other Alvises on Labor Day, Septembr 7 at ML View
Hospital. The Fourth is the son of Alvis III andjaunita White Elk. He is of
WascoOglalla Sioux descent. Alvis, Jr. and Alvis, Sr. are Fourth's grandpa
and great-grandpa, respectively.

Many of you know that I recently
completed my master's degree in
business at the University of Minne
sota. I appreciate all the kind words
of encouragement and prayers you've
given during the two years of stud
ies. It sure went a long way when
things became rough. All it takes to
get educated is average intelligence
and stick to it-iveness when the wa
ters get stormy. A well known church
leader, Dr. Chuck S windol, says you
must experience pain before you
know what joy is. After the stress and
strains of college, I know that is true.
Education must be the tribes' top
priority beyond mere rhetoric.
I am the first recipient of a fellow
ship from First Nations Development
Institute of Falmouth, Virginia and
the University of Minnesota, which
is established to support Indian man
agement. I have an agreement that I
would work for an Indian tribe or

Thanks for support of Red Nation Runners
To the editor,
Many thanks and appreciation
from Lucinda and the "Red Nation
Runners." On short notice the com
munity responded with food and cash
donations for the runners. Recreation
Center was offered for the dinner and
Powwow as well as the staff was on
hand to help, people came forth
voluntarily with food for the potluck
and to help prepare the food. Drum
mers, dancers and Rudy for being the
MC.

Hydroelectric, Joe Tuckta, Rudy,
Anna Clements, Blanket Dance at
Powwow, Community Counseling.

many individuals in the community

studies. The fellowship provided
approximately $40,000 for my
master's program, which was mostly
tuition and fees. Four or five Indian
students will enter this program for
an MBA degree every year.
I received a number of job offers
across the country because of my
educational qualifications, my 12
years of experience with the Tribes'
Finance Department and a summer
stint with 3M main headquarters, a
world-class corporation here in the
Twin Cities. My goal was to work for
my tribe in a general management
capacity. I figured that I have years
of experience and knowledge of our
system, so I could hit the ground
running. Tribal management offered
a position at the same salary step as
when I left two years ago! I was also
requested to go into more training of f
the reservation. I felt insulted be
cause the current managers weren't
required to take training. Besides, I
have more education than most all
our managers, so why should I con
tinue training?

tion and never say anything degrad
ing about my people. I think we are
one of the most progressive tribes in
the country. I am proud to be a full

general management-caliber job with
Little Six, Inc. here in Minnesota,
which is owned by the Mdcwakanton
Dakota Tribe. My position involves
work that I was interested in doing
for my tribe.

Some folks have had some ques
tions about the Boys and Girls Club
of America that will be opening here
in Warm Springs in the not too dis
tant future. So, here we go.
Nationwide organization
helps youth of all kinds
The Boys and Girls Club move
ment is a nationwide affiliation of
local, autonomous organizations and
Boys and Girls Clubs of America
working to help youth of all back
grounds, with special concern for
those form disadvantage circum
stances, develop the qualities needed
to become responsible citizens and
leaders.
Boys and Girls Clubs are for boys
and girls between the ages of eight
and 19. The clubs have full-time pro
fessional leadership, supplements by
part-time works and volunteers. No
proof of good character is required.
The clubs help and guide girls and
boys who may be in danger of ac
quiring, or who already have ac
quired, unacceptable habits and atti
tudes, as well as boys ana gins ot
good character.

enough money to pay me. I am writ
ing this letter to make a point that
money is not the issue.
The fact that I was asked to con
tinue with training concerned me. I
made a big sacrifice taking my son,
Ty Eaglcspcakcr, seven states away
so I can so to collcec. Mv studies
took my time from being a parent to
him and from having time to spend
with friends and family; we were
alone in a very foreign environment
(large university of 55,000 students,
dangers of city, high cost of living,
racism, cold weather, etc.,) without
family to help us out; we had limited
income in comparison to what we
were used to when I had a job. At one
point my health was questionable
there was a possibility of cancer. My
mother had an Indian medicine gath
ering in her home to pray for me, and
fortunately it turned out that nocanccr
existed. It is scary to be so far from
home facing this type of ordeal. I lost
my stepfather, Harold Greene, while
I was here and didn't have funds to
go home to be with my sister and
brothers; I also lost my dear grandfa
ther, Herbert Stwycr. I made a loan to
pay for plane tickets for me and Ty's
trip back to school after grandpa's
funeral. It was difficult to cope with
the deep seated grief and finish my
final year of studies. All of this to
return to a new position at the same
salary step? I certainly paid my dues.
I don't think it is fair for tribal man
agement to ask mc to continue in a
training program either. Gee whiz, I
worked in the Finance Department
long enough to know that we are
overly dependent on expensive out
side consultants. My observation and
presumption is that there is a lack of
confidence in women for top man
agement positions at this time. !
What is it? It is a club for young
people between the ages of 8 and 19.
It uses the mission, principles,
methods and programs of Boys and
Girls Club.
Are you people taking over the
Community Center? No. We will be
vidual assistance or work together
with other club members in small or
large groups. The program is based
on physical, emotional, cultural and
social needs and interests ot girls and
boys and recognizing developmental
principles. Clubs offer diversified
program activities in personal and
education development, citizenship
and leadership development, cultural
enrichment, health and physical
education, social recreation and
outdoor and environmental educa
tion. To accomplish their mission, the
Boys and Girls Club of America
practices a set of principles using
three basic methods to provide a cor
program based on a youth develop
ment strategy. When this strategy is
fully implemented, the self-esteem
of girls and boys is enhanced and an
environment is created which helps
them achieve their full potential.

Seniors renowned
To the editor,
Our year to be an example in a
public manner went to national Indian
country at a national meeting of Se
niors at Green Bay Wisconsin.
Elton Greeley, surprised our se
niors by entering a film of step ex
ercise by our wellness group, pink
outfits, feathers and all. The reaction
to the film segment was, how do you
get seniors to exercise? The conclu
sion was to laugh at yourself, or to
have fun with everyone else, break
the ice. It seems we were unique in
Indian Country. Our stoic and re
served manner was not evident in the
film. Thankfully, General Assembly
was the day we chose to be dressed in
a traditional manner.
The time is near for the 1992
wellness conference at Seaside and
CHEF will be looking at our team.

My main message is for tribal
council and particularly tribal man
agement to give attention to the cou
rageous tribal members who arc fur
thering their education. Offer fair
and equal financial support and set
up a career plan for those who will
graduate soon. We can't afford the
brain drain on our reservation. I pray
for each of you because vour jobs are
most important to the future of my
people. When you are in the Twin
Cities, or even at the airport briefly,
look mc up. I love to sec familiar
people.
I never believed I had the back
bone to be a manager. My grandfa
ther believed 1 did. He encouraged
mc to continue my education and
gave many messages of how wc
should use the best of our own, in
cluding women. At this year's
Lincoln's Birthday Powwow (which
he is a founding member) he spoke of
my educational endeavors and the
fact that my fellowship is saving
money for our tribe. An elder, reli
gious leader, and former councilman,
I am humbled and challenged with
the legacy he left. I do my best to
balance business with the traditions
I've learned from him and from my
mother.
Grandpa's generation made tre
mendous sacrifices so that I can be
come educated. I want to give back
to my community what I have learned.
I am going to be 35 years young very
soon and I intend to work a few more
decades. I'll be back before long....to
my home, family and friends, and a
job serving my people!

Are outsiders running it? No. The
director to operate the club along
with the youth will be a local tribal
member who will receive training by
going to otherclubs in the state to see
how they work.
What of the house rules? The con
duct of the youth in coming to the
club will be set by a list of house
rules designed by the youth, director
and staff. The board of directors will
add general rules to these, like no
smoking...
Is tribal money running it? No.
We are a private group of local folks
who are raising money through grant
writing. No tribal money has been
asked for at this time.
Are the youth involved in your
planning? When we first met about
five months ago, many senior high
age people sat in the meetings. They
talked to the Boys and Girls Club
people and have told us when its
running they will come to help. When
the meetings came more to the busi
ness phase, the senior highs decided
to wait and not be "bored with the
meetings."
We hope for a spring opening of
