The Autumn air is brisk, the
dew a little heavier than last week,
the leaves show a trace of redness
on the edges and the sun seems to
set a little sooner now than a month
ago.
This only means that the nice
warm summer days are fading
away and the chill of winter is just
around the comer. Are you pre
pared for the cold winter season?
If not, its coming anyway.
Just like the fairy talc of the
grasshopper and the ants. All
summer long the ants were busy
going in and out of their ant hill
storing supplies for winter. The
meantime the grasshopper was
having a ball hopping around
playing his fiddle. He asks the
ants, "Why is it you are so busy you don't enjoy the nice summer
days?" The ants said, "We're busy preparing for the cold winter
season. The cold weather sets in and the ants are settled in their home
underground with all the supplies they need. Outside the grasshopper
is freezing trying to find a leaf to eat.
How many of us arc like the ants, preparing for those cold winter
days? Or, are we like the grasshopper hopping around having a ball
without a worry in the world?
Well in the olden days it was customary to store fruits and veg
etables by canning or freezing. Storing meats and fish, cutting a lot of
wood, having enough feed for all the livestock.
Today everything is so unpredictable no one knows what's going to
happen from one day to the next. Especially with George Bush and Bill
Clinton at each others throats trying to get as many people to vote for
them.
There is one thing for certain and that is if Clinton wins the
Presidency there will be a change. If for nothing else it will change
from Republican to the Democratic party. Bush has the upper hand on
Clinton, because he has been through this before and knows he can
make all his promises more convincing. Most of what he has said had
been said during his last campaign speeches even though they were all
rorgotten wncn ne was elected. Now he is worried over the unem
ployed across the country. Probably because his job is up for grabs in
November. A lot of the issues of American people face today were his
top priorities before the last election. He speaks of cutting on taxes,
depending on spending cuts of Congress. There is always that little
ripple he can hide behind to make his statements sound convincing.
This is the second time around for Bush and its a bit scary. What will
people promise just to get the votes. There are so many problems in the
nation today and each candidate cleverly makes statements on how to
handle things. The economy, the veterans administration, employ
ment, the homeless. They speak of how they will help the Blacks,
Hispanics, Jews and other nationalities but not once have I heard
anyone of them mention the Native Americans. I've said this before,
that the only time the whites notice the Indian race is when they go out
to exercise their rights by off reservation fishing and hunting. They
raise all kinds of stink saying the Indians are breaking the law. There
are so many that need to be educated about the treaties and how dear
we cling to those rights. Ahh-Nah-Chi-Toon.

I would like to give a very special
thank you to those who bought foods
from my mother-in-law, Shirley
Chamcma Smith. She made
51,500.00 and she gave it to me to
buy my plane ticket for a 9 day trip in
Singapore.
My husband Cpl. William
Chamcma is on ship the U.S.S.
Ogdcn. He will be out for 6 months.
The Marine Corps can be very
challenging on a marriage! During
he Gulf War he was out on ship for 1 0
months! 1 1c came home for 7 months
and now he is back out again.
I am so grateful to our Futhcr in
heaven for my mother-in-law, and
Alvis, she has really been a blessing
in my life. I love her very much. I am
also very graicful to all of you who
helped make this special trip my
dream come true. I will always re
member this.

Family Services. My youngest of six
children was over 12 months of age
and I was asked to seek employment.
(Personally, I felt I was getting no
where fast but actually it was a step
toward my "wellness".) The next
challenge was getting myself em
ployedwith the typical description
of: "no job experience, little training
in any major field and I didn't finish
college."
Chcle Paye was the first person
who extended her hand to assist me.
Through the combined efforts of three
local programs, JTPA, Employee
Development and COCC, I was able
to successfully complete secretarial
training. It was set up for ten students
and I was the llth...I got in by the
skin of my teeth.
Margie (or Bonnie) Tuckta, gave
me a job interview, even when she
was in need of full time help! She
allowed me toconunue my secretarial
classes and work half a day at Public
Utilities. Being an "on the job
trainee", she has the pleasure of
teaching me. She has been very pa
tient and very helpful, correcting my
efforts in tasks given to me. (Her
children are very lucky to have her
presence with them she's a fine
woman and a good-hearted person!)
She has been very encouraging and
supportive of my joining the Con
federated Tribes work force.
The above story" is not the "sum"
of my life. On top of all the new
changes, I've also been dealing with
court summons, working with legal
aide, victim's assistance, AFS-child
care (while I work and each of their
individual school program needs (I
haven't resigned from being a
"Mommy"), going to community
counseling and women's support
group meetings help me vent my
frustration and identify my own
personal needs.
I 'm working on my "weak" points,
in hopes of improving my quality of
life here on our reservation. I'm an
enrolled member, I want to live here.

"where," and "why," as well as a
telephone number if the listener needs
more information.
All of this information should be
brief enough to fit on the 3 x 5 cards
we use in our studio. We also need to
know when thcannounccmcntshould
start and end.
Perhaps there is more useful in
formation than can be put on such a
small card... if so, we encourage
someone in your group or organiza
tion to make an appointment to come
to the station and record the an
nouncement to be played on the air.
Our staff will be happy to help you
produce an announcement you will
be proud of.

Donations needed for care packages
Community help is needed to begin an Incentive Award
Project for college students who earn 3.0 gpas or better.
Care packages will be assembled for students who attain
this goal and the Education Services Program is currently
accepting donations in the form of money andor items
that students can use while in school. The donation box is
located on the second floor of the old boys dorm.
