PACK 4 Julv 24,1992 Warm Springs. Oregon Spilyay Tymoo Editorial E Ccosh EEWi (The way it is) Letters to the Editor This sure is an odd year, what I mean is with the drought and stuff ' everything seems to be all mixed up and out of schedule. At this time I'll blame the drought for several things that arc unusually early. Take the water .'. shortage for one thing that has created a big change in the whole . trend of daily activities. Every thing has dried up sooner than usual causing fruit to ripen earlier this year. Like everything is about a month ahead of schedule. Take for instance the Huckle berry Feast, which took place on ' . July 12, 1992, where on a normal year it would have been held a month later. "Yep!" in all my bom day, all 39 years, I've never seen anything like it. I never seen a Huckleberry Feast held in July, let alone the first part of the month as it was this year. Reports arc the berries arc well ahead of schedule. Never have gone Huckleberry picking this early in the past. Well anyway the Huckleberry Feast went on as usual with the V sacred ceremonies, giving thanks to the Great Creator through songs of the seven drum religion hoping for a bountiful berry season. Drum : : beats echoed through the forest as tribesmen gathered for the sacred occasion. The location was at the IIcIIc Longhousc located on the beautiful banks of the Warm Springs River some 18 miles west of :: Warm Springs along highway 26. : After the Feast was completed some fun things started to happen, :; like a kids fun rodeo where all the kids were the stars. A few adults got :': into some of the action. During the nights there was Indian dancing. While the dancing was going on, some fellas was out "CHOS-WI-: SHA-ING the women's." Well getting back to the drought N' stuff; everything all happened a little earlier than usual and with all the ceremonies completed people can feel at ease as they go into the berry fields to gather berries. " Well the Presidential campaigns arc gearing up for the big show down on election day this fall. The Democratic Party having their big ' '.' bash in Madison Square Garden, in New York City, N.Y., nominated , ' . Bill Clinton for President. It's time for a change and hopefully Clinton will be our man. We go by Democracy here in the U.S., in which the power is by the people, people of the entire nation. It seems like each election year as ' we go to the polls to vote on the President, we here in the Northwest don't seem to count because in the east they seem to have everything all sewed up and settled before the western states have completed their ' ' voting. The celebrating has already started and sortof makes a person ; feel like, "Why should I go to the polls, it's all settled already." Many ' :, people take this attitude and don't even bother to vote. But like they say, "Your vote counts," and we here in the west should get out and : vote. I will even tell you who to vote for, okay! "You go to the polls and vote for the one who you feel will do the best for our nation! " Now that wasn't so bad, huh? There are all sorts of issues facing the next President. Many campaign speeches from the past have never been fulfilled. Promises, promises, anything to get a vote and all forgotten. We have the big deficit to contend with, homeless issues, women's problems, abortion ' issue, veteran's benefits, and you name it. We could go on and on of (. what was promised yet nothing has been done on them after the election. We the Native Americans don't seem to exist. The only time we are noticed is when we try to exercise our rights such as fishing in areas where it's closed to others. We have several rights that were i. reserved during the treaty signing, but now days no one wants to honor them. And many people still think the U.S. gave lands to the Indians, ; when it is just the other way around where the Indians gave millions of acres of lands to the U.S. and they guaranteed many promises to the Indian tribes. Today many non-Indians feel we arc trespassing when ; we leave the reservation to do our hunting and fishing in our accus ' tomcd places. Or to gather fruits and vegetation. The Native Americans may just be a tcensy wcensy fraction in the ,' election polls but still our vote counts. No one ever mentions the Native American or what they will do for us. We are like swept into . a comer and forgotten. Let's hope we are not swept out completely. In closing I'll remind you to, "Hug your kid today." Better yet, hug your Spilyay. Ayycc!! Rodeo and livestock have been a part of our heritage for many genera tions. With the turn out of our young people, Warm Springs has a lot of capable young people to excel in the sport of rodeo. The slock was a good herd of bucking animals but could not run off the young riders. The kids had a rough Saturday afternoon but came bac k Sunday to try again. Our facilities arc getting worn out but wc got by without any major injuries. Had a little bloody spots, bruises, few tears but one heck of a good lime. For improvement of kids rodeo wc should form a committee to put Ellen Squiemphen Memorial and Stonesetting 10:00 a.m., August 15, 1992 at HeHe Longhouse There will be dinner served and a giveaway after.
