ShlyayTymoo Warm Springs. Oreaon Pack 4 April n, 1992 Editorial E Coosh EEWA: (The way it is) Letters to the Editor jm w mAyh -'A 1 H 1W ' A. "Cm'W dUllyii) 99 The trend around here lately is to become the healthiest rcscrva tion in the country by the year 2000, which is a great thought. It : is one of the things wc need to work on. The main obstacle for this is Drugs and Alcohol!....By com bating illnesses such as these, there is a good chance that wc can achieve our healthy goal. It's a slow process and it takes total commitment by everyone to pitch in and work toward this goal. It sounds easy, but try to turn night into day and sec the problcms...Practice what you preach and get to the bottom of things. The more people talk against drugs and alcohol the more people use them, as though they arc dar- . t.. ing people to make them quit. They use things like cocaine, pills and weed and all that other stuff that makes a person high. Some sniff gas, paint and other chcmicals...Isn't it against the law to do things like this? We have all kinds of sick people who roam the streets everyday across the country, even in our own community, but no one wants to step forward and help them. By the time they realize that a person needs help, it's too late. It takes total commitment, and often a court order to get some people into treatment. If that is what it takes, then people should start thinking about how they can help their kin folks and not wait until death comes, then start feeling sorry for themselves. People should do things to help people while there is still a chance and not depend on anyone else to do it. There is a lot of work ahead for everyone if we intend to meet our goal by the year 2000. AHH-NAH-CHI-TOON! ! ! How does a newspaper function? A newspaper plays several roles, one of which is to let the public know what's happening. News can bring joy, sadness, but still, it has many other uses. In today's world, a newspaper has many obstacles to overcome to be succcsful. Reporters must be aware of all events on his "beat". He must be aggressive and know what's needed and desired by the readers. It is impossible to have a successful newspaper when there is censorship. Publishers and editors stay as far away from people who try to tell them what they should or should not cover. A newspaper is a thing of its own and knows what's pleasing to its readers. A newspaper cannot survive if one person thinks it's not covering events of his choice. What pleases John Doe doesn't necessarily please others. In every community there are several ways for the public to get the latest happenings. There is the newspaper, radio, TV and even news letters and shopping bulletins. All these are different entities, each struggling for survival, each trying to get the news first. A newspaper should not be answerable to just one person or special interest group. Whenever all these entities are grouped into one area or looked at as a unit, thev mieht as well close ud shoD because its purpose is not being fulfilled : If they have to wait to be told what to cover and what not to cover, they are not able to compete for news, nor are they able to please their readers. Spilyay is doing its darnedest to do just that and has been since its beginning in 1976-to please the readership and not any one person. Hopefully, we will continue to do so for a long time to come. It is also our annual Easter weekend. In the last year members have tried to locate a picture of the old Shaker Church, that was used before the present one was built. These people worked hard at building the ShakerChurch: Clarence McKinley, Francis Greene, Hilbert Williams, Sims Holliquilla, Leonard Polk, Charley Tufti, Russell Charley, Bill Switzler, Tom Brown, Louie Mitchell, Roosevelt Suppah, Archie Mitchell, Bill Eyle, Wesley Walsey, Mickey Arthur, Two Coastal Brother's. Head Cooks: Tillie Stacona, Celia Greene, Elvina Switzler, Matilda Mitchell, Ida Wanassey, Jessie Arthur. We have a great respect for all the families who helped build the Shaker Church. When we enter into the church we know these brothers and sisters will always live in our memories, and in the songs we sing. Feel free to come on in and rejoice with us this weekend as we honor "Jesus" and those who helped build the Shaker Church. May God Bless. Shaker Church members Pix ie Sanders. Easter Sunday is April 19. Easter Breakfast will be at 9:30 a.m., worship at 1 1 :00 a.m., egg hunt to follow worship. We ask that you bring some Eastcreggsand candy for the hunt. Easter Sunday night at 7:00 p.m. will be a communion ser vice at the Presbyterian Church. Some also's I would like to give my full support of the new Com modities Program. Many of you know that the Presbyterian Church operates the emergency food box program here in Warm Springs. With the Com modities Program now in place no one in Warm Springs will have a reason to be hungry except for bad judgment. Finally, parents don't give up on your teenage kids. When a child leaves home the first place they will go is to a friend or a home of another family member. In order to stay a while they must give a reason for leaving. It is upon this story another adult will make a choice to give HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAMION! Have a great one! Sky, Saphronia & Toya Warmth extended truly appreciated To the editor: On March 1 1, 1992 veterans from the Post Traumatic Stress Treatment Program at the American Lake Vet erans Administrative Medical Cen ter participated in a special commu nity activity at the Warm Springs Reservation in Oregon. The evening was a tribute to veterans and included a welcome by the Washut Drums at the Longhouse, a wonderful salmon bake meal, powwow and giveaway. The warm spirit that was extended to our group made a significant healing impact amongst our group members who struggle in recovery from the trauma of war. On behalf of the staff from the Post Traumatic Stress Treatment Program at American Lake, we wish to thank each and every person who made this event possible. Your community pride and commitment to veterans is an example that other communities could surely emulate. Many Thanks, Bill Hook, Mental Health Associate Bob Coalson MSW, Co-Team Leader Amy Morris MS, Team Leader Steven Tke MA, Program Director 2 movie; ucivu ucorgc, Peter Pan movie; Patrick Kalama, Yellow Cake; Bcrnic Greene-Boise, Yellow Cake; Louis Scott, Pink Cake; John DcBiaso, Big Cake; I lacl Winanwil, Lop Shawl. Again thank you all for the sup port Wc were fund raising for mile age to Albuquerque, New Mexico for activity bus To the parents of and The Warm Springs community, The activity bus has not been run ning for a few weeks now due to the fact that we can not find a qualified bus driver to make the bus run be tween Warm Springs and the Madras schools. It is the responsibility of the Education Services Program to fill this need. Wc need a qualified certified driver with a Commercial Drivers License (CDL). Wc arc working on this matter. We are asking the parents to bear with us and perhaps form a"car pool" message of hope shelter to your child. A parent must be willing to love deeply enough to go and give your side of the story. To love your child home is at times a loud heart sharing event But wc must be willing to even fight ourselves in order to save our family. The fight in ourselves comes when the story of the child to a friend is true. Then wc mustchoosc when wc can come home as a parent. Parents don't give up on your teenage kids. Parents don't give up on yourselves. God bless you and keep you close to him. Pastor Rick E ST'tli. Happy Birthday Dad! Mon. April 14, 1992 Love ya, Saphronia Katchia Information wanted To the editor, We two (Sabine, 20 years, and Tom, 18, from Switzerland) saw a report about Warm Springs in the TV a few days ago. Wc are very interested in Indians, their culture, life yestcr day and today, their problems and so on. We try to support the Indians in their fight for their rights. But it is hard to get good informations. And so we try to have a lot of contact with people who are well acquainted with this topic. Could you please send us any good informations or reports about the In dians at Warm Springs? We heard also that a man in Warm Springs prints a newspaper from the Indians to the Indians. Is it possible that we can get a subscription to this newspaper? How many have we to pay for it? We thank you very much for your help and send you our compliments.
