Little League BaseballSoftball It is that time of the year again time to dust off your cleats, glove and stretch your muscles. That's right, little league baseball and softball are just around the corner. The Warm Springs Recreation Department is now taking initial steps to get the program started. The office will have registration forms available on Monday, April 6 for parents to come in and register their children. A rep resentative will also be located at Macy 's store on April 6 from 1 1 a., to 3 p.m. Little league baseball and softball are for children ages 6 to 12 years of age for boys and girls and also 133 to 15 year olds for senior girls. Last season, Warm Springs was repre sented by 14 teams entered in the Jefferson County League, and we anticipate that these teams will be field again this season. A breakdown of age groups are as follows: T-Ball boys and girls ages 6 to 8; minors boys and girls 8 to 1 1 years of age; majors will be 9 to 12 years for both boys and girls. These are, of course, based on the players' expe rience and skill. We will make some adjustment to fit their needs. Tryout week wil 1 be April 5 to 9 at 4 p.m. at the ball fields behind the center. We encourage all participants planning to be in this year's program (8 to 1 2 years of age) to participate in the tryouts as well as coaches in both softball and baseball. Player selccuon will be set for Thursday, April 9 at 7:30 p.m. for drafting of players. If your child was placed with a major team last year, heshe will return to that same team this year if heshe meets the age requirements. Please, to make this season successful, we need the parents' help to get their children registered for the program as soon as the registration papers become available. In the past, some would wait until the program has started, then register, and then we would have to place them accord ingly. if you have any questions, call Austin or anyone in the Recreation Office for more information at 553 3243 or 3244. Madras' bid at State tournament falls short Scott Moses makes the All Tournament second team at state while the Madras While Buffaloes cap the sportsmanship trophy for the second year in a row. With Scott's outstanding play on both offense and defense during the state tournament earned him a spot on the All-Star list His outstanding play as a floor leader created problems for the opposing teams. Its ironic to sec all the coaches making plans to stop one player on an un-ranked team at the state tour nament. All the teams Madras faced were ranked toward the top of the final AP poll of the state standings. Just goes to show polls don't hardly mean a thing when it comes to tour nament play. Moses played well in every game along with his team mates as it was a good team effort by all to keep the Buffs in competition. The Buffs had their eyes set on some hardware but that sort of went down the drain as they lost out for fourth place on Saturday. Great performance from Ryan Boyle also helped the Buffaloes as his performance went un-noticcd from other coaches during the tournament, as he was among the top scorers during the tournament. Boyle had an all around effort that sparked the team when they needed it. Ryan Grote another player held some numbers in statistics during the tournamcntas he was among the top rcboundcrs. He also scored his share of points at times. Getting the ball rolling, the Ma dras White Buffaloes came in as the underdogs when they went up against the Fishermen of Astoria who were , highly rated in the state palls. In the game, Madras shot a good 75 in the second half which was enough to carry them to victory after a up and down first half which the score was al! knotted at 32 points apcice at the half time intermission. The leading scorer for the Buffs was Ryan Boyle who popped in a good 24 points to top all scorers of the game. Mark Harris added 14, Scott Moses 12, Ryan Grote 8, and Spencer Gerke 3, Suppah and Barnes. Norgaard topped the scoring for the Fishermen of Astoria with 14, Goin 12, Palmberg 6, Stull 12, Kroczynski 3, and R. Person 2. In the second game the Buffs ran into some trouble when they went up against the Yam Hill-Carlton Tigers. The Tigers proved just a little too much for the Buffs. Not after a good game . There were times when the Tigers had to call a time out to slow down the hard charging Buffaloes With time running out Madras was in a position to grab the lead away from the Tigers but turn overs gave the Yam Hill Carlton the boost they needed and put the Buffs in fouling position which gave Yamhill-Carlton the opportunity to go to the foul line. As anyone will say a game can be won or lost at the foul line and it so happened for the Yamhill-Carlton team to make all their foul shots to - n&Jjl&- est 7 (-v b 1 Zj 4 Scott Moses getting one of his three-point shots against Yamhill-Carlton. The Buffaloes defeated the Dou glas Trojans to eliminate them from the tournament behind the 23 point effort of Scott Moses. Douglas, an other highly rated team from the Far West league, couldn't stop the de termined Buffalo attack. Madras try for fourth place fell short against the Molalla Indians who towered over the Buffs in every position with their shortest starter at six one. The Molalla team kept the pressure on the Buffs with their pressing half court trap which con fused the Buffs from time to time and it was quite effective throught the game. The Molalla Indians went on to defeat the Buffaloes for fourth place honors by the score of 67-54.
