Spilyay Tymoo Editorial E Coosh EEWA (The way it is) Letters to the Editor Warm Springs, Oregon Din: i f. mtn 1 H n itii vii t y ' . - There arc always gripes of how the news is reported here in our local paper. We're damned if we do and damned if wc don't. Ev eryone claims wc arc not cen sored on printing the news but yet there arc always objections on ; how Articles arc handled. News is general knowledge of ; what,'s taking place in the world ; today. The news reporters arc : there to report the action or events that take place and nothing has to be approved for public review. , For example here in our own community wc have just com pleted the nominations for the new set of Tribal Councilmcn. The Simnasho district held their . nominations in the longhousc at . Simnasho. The Agency district held their nominations in the Agency longhousc and the Sccksccqua district held thcir's in the Community Center social hall. , . The general knowledge was nominations for tribal council. All tnc districts completed their task of nominations so its the reporters duty to get the news out to the public who was nominated. It docsn t matter if 200 nominees were named or just one, its the duty of a reporter to let the public know. If there are any discrcpencies that have to be taken care of its up to the organization to worry about that. And if there arc any changes to be made that can come later on whether all nominees were accepted or not. But to get the news to the people on what took place at the nominations was general knowledge and so they are intitlcd to know who was nominated at that time, if you go to any function or rally where the general public is participating there can be no cencorship of any kind of news reporting of the events that take place there. The public has the right to know. AHH-NAH-CHI-TOON!!! wmm .i..m-ii.iii ..) mm IjlljlJJM IUJ I , I . Community members . . . . . , . , To the editor, I was overwhelmed by the re sponse to the clean upourcommuniiy article that I had printed in the last Spilyay. Two phone calls arc hardly a majority around here. I am hopeful that wc just have a lot of blind people living here, as I am ashamed to think there arc that many of my people who don't even read their own paper or worse yet, just don't care. As of this writing, the street sweeper has been by and while it helped the street, it really didn't do much for the rest of the community. My daughtcrcamc home from school last Thursday and informed us that there was a dead dog at her bus stop. I was curious as to what would hap pen if I said nothing. When we took a drive past there the following Sunday, my wife commented on the dog and sure enough, there it was, Apology extended To whom it may it concern, I (Sam) was 17 when I started going out with a girl who was under the age of 18; she and I continued going out when I turned 18, and I knew it was against the law but her and I still kept going out. We were together little over a year but had no real problems until now, theTribcs' CPS found out about us and they gave mc some time in jail, probauon.alongwithcounsc ling. I was wrong for being with her, and knew I was gonna get in trouble Give business a chance To the people, First of all I would like to take this time to thank the people of Warm Springs for sending me to Portland Community College in 1981. Thercl completed the full course of Auto Body Training. At the time, I was a drug addict, an alcoholic, etc., on parole and probation from the state and federal law systems. To make a long story short, I ended up in jail (PV) had to cut my education short and do some time. The good thing about that was I had a lot of time to think about Yny life...I ended up giving my life over to someone who knew how to take care of it better than I did. After several suicide attempts, you know deep down you need help, after years of antabuse, self-will, etc., years of jail time, I finally found God in jail. Anyway I went back to school and Marriage plans This day I will marry my friend, The one I laugh with, dream with, live for, Love. Monique Jae Sconawah and Arthur Brian Mitchell, Sr. request the honour of your presence at their marriage Saturday, the fourteenth of March Nineteen hundred and ninety two at three o'clock Agency Longhouse, Warm Springs, Oregon Dinner to follow Thank you for caring Dear Friends, We would like lo express our gratitude for the calls, notes, prayers, songs, even unexpressed thoughts of hope and comfort that were sent our way from Warm Springs during Bud's illness and afterwards. Special thanks to those of you who were able to come to his service in Parkdale, and to Mary Ann for singing. You all were very important to him and are to us. We have been comforted by your caring. Mary Schlick, Katherine Schlick Noe and family, Joseph Schlick and family right out in plain sight. Today, seven days later, tnc dog was still there and had been joined by two more. My wife called the police department (the ones responsible for enforcing our sanitation ordinance) and was met with a much less than enthusiastic "Okay, I'll tell someone." What a pity it is to be so unconcerned that wc don't care if our children have to stand out and wait for their school bus among dead and decaying ani mals. One large dog lay near the Intertribal building last summer de caying in the heat as people walked by and drove by for days. Finally, we called about it and were informed that ours had been the first and only phone call made about iL Our police department can't do anything about anything if wc don't call in evidently, because they just drove right by it too. I know they passed by the three that I mentioned numerous limes be- but I kept going out with her because I cared for her a lot, I still do care about her. I really don'tthinkthcrc'sany age difference (thcn).and I still don tbut I have an apology to make to the Tribal court and the community. I'm deeply sorry, I made a wrong judgment involving a minor, there's probably gonna be a lotof you who'll hate mc after this but it's my fault, my responsibility to deal with the feeling of rejection. Sincerely, Sam Goodlance linishcd my Auto Body course in 1983 with a certificate. Since 1981 1 have been active in the Auto Body field, been in it now 12 years. I was always fascinated by Auto Body work since my teens. Upon coming back to the Res. the going wage for Auto Body is $28.00 per hour to (?). I thought if I ever got into my chosen profession full-time I would have a fair price, be fair to my people, save my people some bucks. Being a preacher I can't help but be fair, my God demands it! As uncertainties about my current job situation (WSFPI) don't know if your here today or gone tomorrow. I'm asking the people of Warm Springs to give me a chance at my profession and give me your business. Custom paint, complete paint jobs, body work, window replacement. Thank you for any help you may give. Sports show committee ' i , i. - .i' fs " J seem to be r ii fore our call todav. What is happening here!? Our an cestors were not filthy people! They got their food, clothing, and shelter, not mention their tools and spiritual gifts from the land and the animals, but they were clean! Not just about their persons, but about their homes and communities. When they moved their camps, they didn't leave behind a bunch of trash, garbage, and rotting flesh, much less live in it. Anything old or worn out was properly dis carded or fixed and made useful again. I hear that wc must teach our children about our culture. This is not our culture! We arc teaching our children to live less sanitarily than our animal brothers and sisters. What about them? Their living conditions have become much less sanitary be cause of us. It isn't healthy for them cither. I don't appreciate taking my fam ily out for a day at the local creek in the summertime and having to wade through the dirty diapers and beer and chip containers. No, I didn't put them there, but I will pick il up before I will let myself or my family go and relax and play in it. I have tread all over this place that Clean up and Dear editor, It never ceases to amaze me how blind some people can be. I am a private home owner who had to provide the down payment, access to the home-site, water, septic tank and electricity for my home. Prior to the purchase of my own home I was a tenant in a H.U.D. rental unit. I was also subjected to abide by all the rules which I took very seriously. I still care for my home which I hope my children and grandchildren can enjoy long after I'm gone. Recently my husband brought home a letter, which I assume was intended for the tribal and HUD tenants who rent from the Tribal Housing Dept., and too, I read a letter that was written to one of my children who is a private home buyer under the Mutual Help Program. I laughed so hard I almost had heart failure and that is what compelled me to write this article. In the first place, did all the em ployees deserve to be sent this letter regarding upkeep, uncontrolled al cohol and drug related parties not to mention abandoned cars and filthy yards I laughed because we are not practicing what we preach. Not only that but we lack applying them, you lose respect for yourself. Do you really have the means to enforce your threats? Do we have laws to force all people to clean up your act or move out? Then we had better expect the persons whose signatures appeared on the letters to shape up too and set Tribal Council Agenda Monday, March 16, 1992 9:00 a.m. - Business 9:30 a.m. - Endangered Species Act Update -Winter Season Update 1:30 p.m. - Conference Call 2:00 p.m. - Corp of Engineers Tuesday, March 17, 1992 9:00 a.m. - Business 9:30 a..-n. - Health & Welfare Committee & Jim Quaid 11:00 a.m. - CommitteeBoard Selections ! :30 p.m. - Malheur National Forest Wednesday, March 18, 1992 9:00 a.m. - Business 9:30 a.m. - Tribal CouncilManagement Follow up workshop (cont.) Arc wc so concerned about the new age and money that wc arc willing to give up our cleanliness and our health to save a few bucks? What about our health? It seems to mc that wc could save more if wc cleaned up this place and kept il that way, than spending all the money it costs to treat the illness' caused by the mess, not to mention the profit that could be made by the boost in our tourist trade, because they enjoy coming to a nice clean natural area. The people here arc always com plaining about how our non-Indian neighbors have stereotyped us. It is becoming more and more apparent that we have stereotyped ourselves and are just blaming someone else. If this seems harsh, ii is supposed to be. It is time to stop beating about the bush and clean out from under it and around it. Keith V. Charley, Sr. 553-1936 keep it that way up a good example of how you ex pect your tenants to live. I drive to visit my son and his family frequendy. I am totally ap palled at what I see in comparison to the recipient of the letter, his unit I could never be embarrassed of. Contrary to the one on main drag, in sight for all to see, broken windows, obviously dirty not to mention overturned furniture and garbage all over the hillside, yard, and carport. Appliances tossed out, evidently no longer in use. We can't blame the dogs fordoing the damage just lately because it is there year round. It is time for you to look in your own backyards and apply some of you rules to yourselves and strengthen some who the law should apply to. For instance pasturing horses in a yard which had years of beautiful yard and shade trees, tenants parking and driving on the lawns on the campus. We need to concern our selves of good sanitary practices and apply our energy there. Concentrate on a unit that is visible for all to see, in view of our school children every day. With the annual spring clean up campaign I am looking forward to drastic changes because I am sin cerely worried for our Annual Pi-Ume-Sha Celebration creeping up on us and in our visitors view is something else.
