Tax help offered
A tax preparation workshop will
be held this year. Glenn Munroe of
Islcr Company will be available to
assist tribal members in preparing
tax returns. It is scheduled for Feb
ruary 1 1-12, 1992. The location will
be announced at a later date. A new
service has been added this year

Do I need a CDL? If you drive a
commercial motor vehicle, you need
a Commercial Drivers License. This
includes diesel truck drivers, bus
drivers, drivers carrying hazardous
materials, vehicles with weight of
more than 26,000 pounds, and driv
ers carrying 16 people or more.
Where can I go to get a CDL?
Anyone who registers through the
COCC Center for the CDL training
can take the test in Warm Springs on
January 30, 1992. There are 7 dif
ferent tests offered depending on the
type of license you are interested in.
How much does it cost? There will
be a $59 registration fee for the
course. Each test costs $3.00 (maxi
mum of $18) for the written portion.

the Central Oregon Interagency
Council (COIC). According to Ted
Vcramontc, eight individuals signed
up for the session. Initially, four ses
sions were to be scheduled, but be
cause of low interest, future sessions
will be scheduled only if former
employees contact COIC.

COCC Presidential Scholarships
are awarded to Native Americans.
Four scholarships of $1,250 per,
academic year are available, with
the possibility of renewal for a sec
ond academic year. Qualified Native
American students are encouraged
to apply. The deadline for applica
tions is January 31, 1992.
To qualify:
1. Applicants must be Native
American.
2. Applicants must have com
pleted at least 12 credit hours of
college course work with a minimum
college cumulative GPA of 2.5
greater.
3. Applicants must enroll full
time inadegree or certificate program
at COCC (minimum 12 credits).
4. Applicants must submit evi
dence of achievements in academic,
cultural, athletic, student leadership,
civic or personal pursuits.
5. Applicant must submit a COCC
Presidential Scholarship for Native
Americans Application Form and
required documents by the published
scholarship deadline.
To Maintain:
1 . Applicant must earn a quarterly
grade point average of 2 J or greater.

conference will be held February 18
through 21 in Phoenix, Arizona at
the Hyatt Regency Hotel. The four
day conference will feature infor
mative workshops and general ses
sions for over 800 Native women
from the United States and Canada.
The conference is being sponsored
by Health Promotion Programs at the
University of Oklahoma and co
sponsored by the Office of Health
Programs, Indian Health Service
Headquarters. The President's
Council on Physical Fitness is a
collaborative agency.

The Warm Springs Education
Service Department is making an
Activity Bus available for Jr. and Sr.
High School students who stay after
school for some reason such as sports.
The bus will transport Warm Springs
students from Madras back to Warm
Springs, the driver will be David
Poitras. He will make two runs, the
first one will depart from Madras Jr.
High at 5:15 p.m. and from Madras
Sr. High at 5:30. The second run will
leave MJHS at 7:30 and MHS at
7:40. The Activity Bus will run on
other special activities, such as
dances, if requested by the school.

CPS receives three service grants
The Confederated Tribes of Warm
Springs was awarded three new grants
to support Child and Family Services
for residents of the Reservation.
These grantscontracts will be ad
ministered by the Children's Pro
tective Services Department.
The first grant is the Social Ser
vices Block Grant, otherwise known
as Title of the Social Security Act
This grantcontract is awarded to the
states and required negotiation with
the State of Oregon, Children's Ser
vices Division. The grant award to
Warm Springs is $37,614. These

award is $83,500. This grant is for
the development of child care re
sources on the reservation. Under a
collaborative agreement with the
Department of Education, CPS will
turn all fundsand administration over
to Early ChildhoodDay Care Pro
gram. CPS will provide home
evaluations, background checks, and
certification of homes or centers.
Education will provide the actual
disbursement of funds.
The third grantcontract is a con
tract with the Bureau of Indian Affairs
under Public Law 93-638. BIA has
awarded the Tribes $30,000 of the
Child Abuse Initiative funding from
Congress. The purpose of this grant
is to provide training for staff and
foster parents in preventing abuse
and neglect and remedying problems
that bring children into foster care.
