Sovereignty
What are the words in tiic songs
wc sing today? Wc have In the
past through our religious life in
the Indian way interpreted the laws
of the land through song. We have
known sovereignty of our domain
from our"G.xat Creator."
today we are speaking of sov
ereignty, that we must make a
declaration of sovereignty. What's
sovereignty today as to the day
the treaty was signed by our fore
fathers. Being a descendant of the
Sahaptin people who resided up at
the John Day and Willow Creek
area, I am wondering what's the
difference in the language of the
past and that of the present? During
the treaty signing, wasn't it agreed
upon by the Tribes and the Whites, that we would give to the United
States all those millions of acres of land now known as the Ceded area,
but retain a small portion of land in which we would live. In return the
United States promised all these things. They would provide shelter,
medical care, education, sawmills, farm equipment, livestock, rations
of food. They would teach trade techniques, also that we would reserve
the right to hunt, fish, gather fruits and roots and all foods in our
accustomed places without interference from the Whiteman. These
promises were made to last as long as the rivers ran and the mountains
stood.
I believe we must watch every word inserted into a declaration of
sovereignty, words mat cannot be altered and used in other meanings
which could harm our rights we have from those treaties. As I have
understood the Tribes were referred to as sovereign nations dealing
with the United States.
There are so many things we have to be aware of especially the way
documents are worded. Today the Whiteman is trying to find any kind
of loop hole tho break our treaties we have with the United States.
These are just thoughts I had to offer on the subject of sovereignty...I
still say we must be very careful on how we word our declaration of
sovereignty. AHH-NAH-CHI-TOON.

Consultant "dictators" making second class citizens
To the editor,
In 1934 "Indians" became U.S.
citizens. In I933 Adolf Hitler became
dictator of Germany because of one
vote. These two incidents in history
are happening to us again. Seems
like we are becoming 2nd class citi
zens again in our own country, the
W.S. Indian reservation, by allowing
these consultants to dictate our lives.
During our history here in the
United States, people have been
ripping us off of our Iand, resourccs
fish etc. Are we the people allowing
these consultants to commit eco
nomical genocide & ruin? Where is
the wisdom of our leaders? Seems no
one is profiling except these guys
and those who hired them. By one
vote Hitler came into power. Is it
because of one person that these con
sultants have come to power?
I'm going to sign my name cause
"I'm not scared what man will do
unto me" seems all these things come
non us because we forgot to put
God first, maybe we got too big &
arrogant in our ways, financially
thinking, we never would see such
hard times.
Researcher
looking for
CCC workers
To the editor,
An experienced researcher is try
ing to locate any Indians who served
in the Civilian Conservation Corps
in Oregon in camps which were un
der BIA supervision. I believe there
were seven such camps and have the
names of some but no additional in
formation regarding their location,
members, or any other details.
If you served as an Indian in a BIA
CCC camp within Oregon during the
period 1933 through 1942, please
write to me and tell me something
about your experiences in CCC. If
you served in a CCC camp which
was not under BIA supervision, I
would also be pleased to hear from
you.
You may reach me at 2650
Sheridan Avenue, North Bend, OR
97459 - phone 503-756-0256.
Thank you for your consideration
and cooperation.

Send children to school
To the editor,

Indian language
To the editor:
The culture and Heritage Depart
ment is looking for 10 speakers of a
Tribal language to learn and work as
trainee Indian language teachers. We
want people who speak one of our
three Tribal languages Warm
Springs, Wasco, or Paiute and are
willing to be trained to be language
teachers in the community.
Trainees will be paid from funds
granted by the National Park Service.
The grant also covers expenses for
teaching materials and for outside
teacher trainers who will work with
the trainees alongside me.
The culmination of the training
will be pilot classes for beginners in
each of the Tribal languages, to be
taught by the trainees. There will be
three or four trainees for each lan
guage, so they will "team-teach. This
will alleviate pressure on any indi
vidual trainee.
Trainees will be prepared for
teaching the classes over a period of
twelve weeks. For ten of those weeks,
they will work four to six hours a
week with me on methods of teach
time, now thcres nothing left but what
we use to know drugs, booze etc. I
hope someone out there docs some
thing quick, fast & in a hurry cause
time is running out

and materials. They will also learn
the basics of reading and writing their
language. While the language classes
will be primarily oral, we want our
teachers to be able to read and write
in order to prepare lesson plans.
For two weeks, outside trainers
will be brought in to do full day
workshops. Definite arrangements for
these trainers have not yet been made,
but it is expected that at least one will
be an American Indian language
educator who has trained Indian
language teachers on various reser

the trainees selected. Trainees will
be paid for each hour of training or
