With the nation in disrupt in world affairs mainly in Asia, and here on the home front the economic situation is at a point where it raises many questions. The em ployment situation is becoming one of the leading problems, es pecially here in the Northwest. What's being effected most is the timber industry where things look pretty dim especially in logging. The logging operations face problems arising in the Old Growth Timber, the Spotted Owl, and the lower market value in timber sales. All these things have a great impact on the reser vation as a greater portion of in come is derived from stumpagc and the timber sales have slack ened a great deal. There have been several mills and logging operations that have been forced to shut down because of the economy which is in a critical stage at the present time here in the northwest. All these elements have a direct bearing on many large corpora tions and it's stock holders. When the returns are not substantial many stock holders want to sell their shares of stock to prevent too large of a loss, or to find other sources to invest in.At the present time there is a committee headed by the interior Secretary where he is expected to announce if the can go ahead with timber sales where the Spotted effected., . , v.; .:.,...,..!... i -.-!,;,,..' fit,-,. . " I guess what I'm referring to is the dividends (Bonus) that have been declared in the past for each Tribal member. Lets be practical, when there is a good year and the funds generated at the highest return and at the lowest risk possible it is very possible to declare dividend payments to everyone. There are years when the income is not as great as in the past such as the present time it may not be advisable to declare dividend payments. With the present situation where the whole timber industry is on a down swing some financial analysts advise that it would be wiser to retain all returns for future developments. This is not factual but what I'm saying is maybe there is a time when we p0unds even 'anj measured 20'$ condition. This is one of the worst years we've seen in the timber industry here and the way things look it will not improve tor some time to comcPerhaps we've got to start looking at other sources of income in the very near future and not rely solely on the timber industry. You couldn't find a nlace tn park, and when you did, you found out there was barely room to sit down if you were laic to the show. Well, it looks like you're going to get a second chance at a better scat to watch them this coming February. Naturally we hope to provide you with free admission again, which was the main reason everyone got to come last time. So what do I want from you? I want you to help mc And the young people in this community who have a strong interest in the performing arts, who can help me promote this show in February. We want young people who want to develop skills associated with per forming arts, which includes such things as creative thinking, careful planning, building team relation ships, developing intcr-departmcn-taland intcr-committce relationships with existing tribal management and of course, learning to express them selves through concepts such as the performing arts. The young people who arc com mitted to a project like this, will be the ones Riven the recognition for bringing the Lamanite Generation to Warm Springs. The Lamanite Generation is a group of young people of many, many nations, and the young people pro moting their return will be the same. We want to promote all young people, all working together with common goals and will insist that the group be comprised of youth from Warm Springs and Madras. Our group will not be looking at high or low grades, popular or un popular, cool or not cool, leaders or followers. We just want young people who want to promote what young people have the courage and ability to do, when someone allows them to. Young people don't have to do something wrong, or do something right, to belong to this group, they just have to believe they can be good at developing new skills. What about us adults? Well, wc get to oversee, guide, supervise when needed, coordinate activities and do lots of encouraging and advising. Adults always get the credit for ev erything. It's time to let the youth show us what they can do. You want the young people to get involved in positive situations, then guide them the authority to develop those situations in a manner which is acceptable to them. Then, once it's together, don't go in there and try to take it away form them, or take credit for its success. Do you know someone interested in the performing arts? We are asking as many VFW members to attend as possible as it is important for our District officer to see how much we are interested in our organization. Also, remember, your dues for 1991. Recruit! Recruit! Recruit for new members. We would like to see our Post and Auxiliary get 100 per cent. (So we won't have to cook!) If we can get enough members to par ticipate, we can have a lot of fun in projects. There are a lot of fun projects within the VFW that we are supposed to be doing, but can't due to a lack of participation. One is the Voice of Democracy, where we can choose a candidate from the reservation and not just from the Madras Schools. This would be an honor for one of our students in high school! Another project due in a couple of months is a poppy display to be used during the January mid winter conference. We are also asked that we participate in all community service programs for a continuous growth in membership and cancer aid and research. Did you know: Your Auxiliary gets $20 for being 100 percent by September 30? You can win awards for signing up members? That we receive a percentage of the monies we donate to cancer back for research in Oregon? We have so many out standing programs in the Post and Auxiliary. There is something for everyone: cancer aid, VA Hospital, Nursing Home, youth activities, Voice of Democracy, safety and drug abuse, just to name a few. We help support the national Home with our sale of Buddy Poppies. Also, we contribute to the VA hospitals and veterans who are in new. Youth pro grams are 'The Voice of Democracy: contest and forming a "Jr. Girls Unit.", Stand proud and salute for the spirit of America Make yesterday's dreams today's reality.
