During a pause, tribal leaders asked that the Longhouse be cleared so they could prepare for the serving of the feast. My parents were tired and so we rested briefly on the benches along the wall. As preparation began in earnest, with colorful cloths and mats being stretched end to end at our feet, we prepared to leave, to make room for Native American families. But two such families, whom we didn't know, invited us to remain. "Be our guests," To the editor, Happy birthday to Ernest Hunt (5-7-91) who is 63 years of age. The people of Celilo then truly demonstrated the meaning of the word "guest" by making us feel welcome and a part of the tradi tional service. On either side of us and my parents, Native Americans explained the meaning of the tradi tional songs, described the impor tance of the sequence of events, helped us appreciate the time and care of food preparation that had been going on for days. With pride, elders explained the importance of their young men and women who had fished and gathered roots, and who were now serving the meal. We appreciated the careful way the food was distributed around the room and the gentle methods par ents used to keep their young child ren patiently waiting despite the growing aroma of baked salmon and venison and despite the mats before us filling up with heaping bowls of food. The-.i together, we sat on mats and with the sauce that hunger and good company provides, participated in a meal that truly was a feast. We did not know who to thank for allowing us to be so graciously treated during the Salmon and Root Feast and so are writing this letter. Prior to our arrival, we knew none of the famlics who were so gracious to us. A Whitchawk fam ily from Yakima and Ken Smith, who introduced himself as a medi cine man from Warm Springs, were especially warm and welcoming to us, but each person at Celilo treated us with inviting care and kindness. We want to thank all the people who treated us so richly and tell you that our family will always remember fondly the April day we shared in a truly thanks-giving meal.
