Summer Youth Work Program
How do I become eligible for a job slot this summer?
There are two pots of money to operate the Summer Youth Work
Program for 1991. JTPA: Indian youth who are recognized Indians,
meet federal eligibility requirements and pass the drug test will be
eligible. There are 21 job slots within the J I PA pot. Tribal Youth Work
Program: Only youth enrolled with Warm Springs who will be age 14 by
June 15, 1991 through age 17 are eligible to seek a job slot within th
pot. If you are 18 and still attending high school you would be eligible to
work under the program. There are 68 job slots within the Tribal pot of
money.
The youth population has grown tremendously and money is limited
Therefore jobs will be very competitive. Only students who: (I) Finish
their profiles with the Youth Coordinator and staff. (2) Attend
Orientation Career Workshop (date and time for this will be advertised
through individual letters to students, posters will be put up and it will
be on the radio), (3) Follow all directions given to them at the
orientation, and (4) Pass the drug test will have a fair chance at
obtaining a job.
Job slots will not be on a first come first served basis. Each student
will have a chance to get a job if they do all the things that are listed
ibove.
The selection of a student getting a job slot will work like this: After
the student attends the orientation career workshop he she will be able
to start contacting the employers that they chose to work for and set up
interview appointments. Each student has three different jobs that they
will be applying for. The supcrvisor(s) will be the ones selecting their
student worker for the summer. It is up to the student(s) to make the
interview appointment and to present themselves to the supervisor as
the one for the job. Students can call the Youth Coordinator at 553
3262 after May 29 to see if they were selected.
What is the hourly rate of pay?
The work program will be paying minimum wage which is $4.75
per hour.
When does the program start and end?
The Youth Work Program will begin on June 24, 1991 and end on
August 16, 1991. The program is eight weeks in length.
What are the working hours?
Standard working hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Some job
sites will have varied days & hours which will be followed. Check with
your supervisor. A 1 5 minute break is allowed in the morning and one in
the afternoon. Again, check with your supervisor.
How do I know if summer school is a requirement for me?
If a student is off-track for graduation then they will be required to
attend classes from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon Monday through rnday in
order to work under the program. Students are not going to be paid for
the hours they attend classes, but will be paid for the hours they work
from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. This is an excellent opportunity for students to
make up missed credit(s) so they can graduate on schedule. Getting your
diploma in important.
What is involved in the Mandatory Drug Test?
The Tribal Council enacted a Drug Free Policy which applies to all
evels of employees (full-time, temporary, work programs & part-time)
The Youth Program is considered full-time temporary. If you are
selected for a job slot you will be required iO take a pre-employment
drug test. If you test positive you will not be able to work. You will be
informed where to go to take the test. The test consists of a brief
orientation of procedures, completing some forms, and providing a U A
(Urine Specimen). If you do not show up for the drug test it will be
considered a refusal and you will not be allowed to work.
What do I need to do to keep my job slot if I get selected?
Be to work every day. Practice good work habits and be to work at
least 10 minutes before your start time. Value your summer job
remember not every student will be able to work. Be responsible and
reliable. Ask questions if you are uncertain about anything-this is a time
to grow and learn. Have fun!
NOTE: If you have any further questions please contact the Youth
Coordinator (Sophie Lynn Thomas) at 553-3262, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m
Monday through rnday.
Students need to have their profiles intakes completed by March 29,
1 991 . If you have not completed this please call the Youth Coordinator
(Sophie Lynn Thomas) at 553-3262 to get your appointment lor this.
