Barton, born November 14, 1907, died March 10, 1991 at Mt. View Hospital following a heart attack. Edith was raised near El Paso, Texas where she attended public schools. At the age of 16, in 1923, she moved to Portland, Oregon. During World War II she worked and lived in northern California and Alaska. She also farmed in Albany, Oregon before moving to Madras in 1974. While living in Madras she worked as a private per sonal care giver. She was a long time friend of the Langley family. Services were held Wednesday, March 13, 1991 at Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home in Madras. Burial was at the Mt. Jefferson Memorial Park in Madras. She is survived by two daugh ters, Lorraine Crowley and Gwen Darling and a son, George Flake. The Deschutes and Ochoco National Forests, in co operation with the Oregon State Department of Employment, are recruiting to fill approximately thir teen (13) positions. Work is out-of doors performing needed conserva tion work including slush disposal, trail maintenance, and campground cleanup. Awareness and understand ing of environmental factors will be included in the program. Applicants must be 15 by June I, but not over 18 by August 30 and must live within 35 miles of the work site. Previous participants are not eligible to apply. Indi viduals may apply to only one employment office. Duplicate ap plications will not be considered. The selectees will start June 17 and work for approximately eight weeks. Pay is at the current mini mum wage of $4.75 an hour. Summer Youth Work Program How do I become eligible for a job slot this summer? There are two pots of money to operate the Summer Youth Work Program for 1991. JTPA: Indian youth who are recognized Indians, meet federal eligibility requirements and pass the drug test will be eligible. There are 21 job slots within the J I PA pot. Tribal Youth Work Program: Only youth enrolled with Warm Springs who will be age 14 by June 15, 1991 through age 17 are eligible to seek a job slot within th pot. If you are 18 and still attending high school you would be eligible to work under the program. There are 68 job slots within the Tribal pot of money. The youth population has grown tremendously and money is limited Therefore jobs will be very competitive. Only students who: (I) Finish their profiles with the Youth Coordinator and staff. (2) Attend Orientation Career Workshop (date and time for this will be advertised through individual letters to students, posters will be put up and it will be on the radio), (3) Follow all directions given to them at the orientation, and (4) Pass the drug test will have a fair chance at obtaining a job. Job slots will not be on a first come first served basis. Each student will have a chance to get a job if they do all the things that are listed ibove. The selection of a student getting a job slot will work like this: After the student attends the orientation career workshop he she will be able to start contacting the employers that they chose to work for and set up interview appointments. Each student has three different jobs that they will be applying for. The supcrvisor(s) will be the ones selecting their student worker for the summer. It is up to the student(s) to make the interview appointment and to present themselves to the supervisor as the one for the job. Students can call the Youth Coordinator at 553 3262 after May 29 to see if they were selected. What is the hourly rate of pay? The work program will be paying minimum wage which is $4.75 per hour. When does the program start and end? The Youth Work Program will begin on June 24, 1991 and end on August 16, 1991. The program is eight weeks in length. What are the working hours? Standard working hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Some job sites will have varied days & hours which will be followed. Check with your supervisor. A 1 5 minute break is allowed in the morning and one in the afternoon. Again, check with your supervisor. How do I know if summer school is a requirement for me? If a student is off-track for graduation then they will be required to attend classes from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon Monday through rnday in order to work under the program. Students are not going to be paid for the hours they attend classes, but will be paid for the hours they work from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. This is an excellent opportunity for students to make up missed credit(s) so they can graduate on schedule. Getting your diploma in important. What is involved in the Mandatory Drug Test? The Tribal Council enacted a Drug Free Policy which applies to all evels of employees (full-time, temporary, work programs & part-time) The Youth Program is considered full-time temporary. If you are selected for a job slot you will be required iO take a pre-employment drug test. If you test positive you will not be able to work. You will be informed where to go to take the test. The test consists of a brief orientation of procedures, completing some forms, and providing a U A (Urine Specimen). If you do not show up for the drug test it will be considered a refusal and you will not be allowed to work. What do I need to do to keep my job slot if I get selected? Be to work every day. Practice good work habits and be to work at least 10 minutes before your start time. Value your summer job remember not every student will be able to work. Be responsible and reliable. Ask questions if you are uncertain about anything-this is a time to grow and learn. Have fun!
