The race is getting tighter as the season end nears. The Madras girls basketball team totally controlled the game Saturday night February 2. IWI. trimming the Burns Hilanders, who just came off of a win over the Ontario Tigers on their floor just recently. What more can you say when the entire team is able to score points as the Buffs had a good night. Danielle Sheen and Vanessa Dick were high scorers for the Hilanders as each got 8 points Pelton Lanes team leads The Pelton Lanes team is lead ing with a 25-1 1, standing with Mid Columbia Box and the Renegades tied for second place each having 23-1 3 records. The Central Oregon Insurance is third with a 20-16, Country Tires 17-19, Madras Body and Glass 16-20, Sportsworld 15 21, Aherns 13-22 and Brightwood 12-24. . - At press time the Mid Columbia Box and Renegades were battling it out for second place but at this time there are no results of the outcome of the two teams. The Mid Columbia Box team members consist of Chuck Patterson, Cass Hunt, Tim Ogilvie, Rick Otter, Brent Holmes, Steve Bradham and Bob Branson. The Renegades team consists of Don Winishut, Owen Danzuka, Lawrence Shike, Sid Miller, Ray Shike, Jr. and Rod Adams. Don nie Winishut a consistant bowler who has an average of 1 78, improv ing right along, Owen Danzuka State basketball playoffs just around the corner The basketball season is rapidly coming down to its final stages with the state play-offs just around the corner. First there will be the boys 4-A, and the Girls 3-A tour naments held. The boys will be playing in the Memorial Coliseum while the girls will be playing in the Armory in Salem. There are four categories of schools in the state, starting with the 4-A, which has an enrollment of 1 ,000 kids or more, then the 3-A with 600 or more kids and the 2-A, and 1-A which are the smallest schools. The Madras White Buffaloes are in the 3-A class which consists of 8 different districts. In District 1, the COWAPA league has seven schools which include the Astoria Fishermen, Clatskani Tigers, Rainier Colum bians, St. Helens Lions, Scappoose - Indians, Seaside Seaside Seagulls and the Tillamook Cheesemakers. District 2, the Tri-Valley league has eight schools which are the Banks Braves, Estacada Rangers, Gladstone Gladiators, Hood River Valley Eagles, LaSalle Falcons, St. Mary of the Valley, Sherwood Bowmen and The Dalles Indians. District 3, is the Far West, which has eight schools who are the Ban don Tigers, Brookings-Harbor Bruins, Coquille Red Devils, Doug 1 las Trojans, Myrtle Point Bobcats, Reedsport Braves and Siuslaw 'Vikings. There were no three points made from either team as the points came pretty easy for the Buffs. The Hilanders made several attempts but the ball missed its mark. The Buff girls have five games left which three are on the road and two on the home floor. Their next game they will host the OntarioTigers on Friday night and on Saturday night they will travel to Milton-Freewater to meet the Mac Hi Pioneers. The following week they go to Riverside, and on the 22 of February Baker comes to town, then the following week the final game on the schedule they travel to meet the Burns Hilanders on their home court, and they are always tough at home. another bowler on the rise sports an average of 162 for his first year with the Renegades, Lawrence Shike a well established bowler who has an average of 199, keeps the team on the ball, Rod Adams another newcomer to the team who does a lot of filling in when a team member is absent, he is sporting an average of 169. Ray Shike, Jr., who . is the Chief or the Captain of the Renegades is a consistant bowler with an average of 201. He comes through when the ice is thin and keeps the team agoing. The final member of the Renegades team Sid Miller who has an average of 1 46, a sandbagger, said he has a slump each year and thats between Sep tember until May. After that things go better for him. The Renegades have made the roll-offs in the first third and now right in the thick of things as the second third is closing. District 4 is the VAL-CO league which has seven schools who are Central Panthers, Newport Cubs, Philomath Warriors, Taft Tigers, Toledo Boomers, Waldport Irish, Yamhill-Carlton Tigers. District 5 is the SKY-EM, which has eight schools who are Cottage Grove Lions, Creswell Bulldogs, Elmira Falcons, Glide Wildcats, Junction City Tigers, Marist Spar tans, Pleasant Hill Billies, Suther lin Bulldogs. District 6, the SKYLINE has eight schools which include Henley Hornets, Hidden Valley Mustangs, Illinois Valley Cougars, Lakeview Honkers, North Valley Knights, Phoenix Pirates, Rogue River Chieftains, South Umpqua Lan cers. District 7, Greater Oregon League has, seven schools who are the Baker Bulldogs, Burns Hiland ers, Madras White Buffaloes, Mc Loughlin Pioneers, Nyssa Bull dogs, Ontario Tigers, Riverside Pirates. District 8, Capital, has eight schools who are. Cascade Cougars, Dallas Dragons, Mollala Indians, North Marion Huskies, Silverton Foxes, Stayton Eagles, Sweet Home Huskies, Woodburn Bull dogs. In the class 3-A the state tour nament is held on the Mac Arthur Court on the University of Oregon Campus, in Eugene, Oregon. Buffs won 74-43. top two finishers of each district qualify for the state play-offs with the No. 1 seed from each district will meet the No. 2 seed of another district. The race is getting tight in several of the leagues where a play off may determine the representi tives to the state tournament. This applies for both the boys and girls teams. So far the Madras White Buffa loes have a fairly good chance on representing the Greater Oregon League in the boys division, but at the present time its touch and go for the girls division as Ontario and Baker lead the league at the present Medicine Wheel drawing set Last quarter medicine wheel drawing is set for March 15th. Freshman team loses to Bend January 29 The Madras High School Fresh man basketball team played host to Bend High school at the Warm Springs Community Center, Tues day January 29, 1991. The Buffs fell short in the first quarter as they scored 8 points against the 12 points from Bend. At the end of the half, the Buffs still fell short 17-27. They then made a comeback in the third outscoring their opponent, and making the score 44-37. They again trailed behind and lost the ball game 53-57. Coach Bob Mckenzie felt they played very well in the third qua ter but lost their momemtum. He feels the teams' skill level is im proving and the loss record is not of importance. In their last outing they traveled to Burns to meet the Hilanders on their court and came home vic torious beating them 47-37. The Hilanders tried to slow down the tempos and use a different ap proach on the hard running Buf falo team. At the half time period the score was 27-13 in favor of the Buffs.
