PAGE 4 February 8, 1991 Warm Springs, Oregon Spilyay Tymoo Editorial E Coosfa EEWA (The way it is) Letters to the Editor ''&jbtf iWtf" Valentine's messages from the heart A support group formed here for those parents who have a son or a daughter in the service. They meet every Tuesday even ing, in the Counseling Center conference room in the Old Girls Dorm. This is something that is well needed and serving its purpose well. Gives the parents a chance to see how others are doing and also to share experiences and feelings with one another, since the Desert Storm has taken the spotlight. We have several over there and we hope they will have a safe return soon. In attending one of the meet ings to show my support of our troops in aauai Arabia, re minded me of the time when I entered the service. At that time I was envious of all my friends who were enlisting into the Marines, Navy and Air Borne and what not. I felt left out because I was newly married and thought I would not get into the service. One day I received a letter from Uncle Sam for pre-induction physical examination. When I boarded the bus in Bend, Oregon, I said to The Mrs., "See ya in a couple of days." I thought being married I had nothing to worry about, or that they wouldn't take me in. But when we got into the Armory in Eugene, Oregon, we fell into formation and the officer in charge addressed us and said, "All of you who's name is called take one step forward." So when he came to my name I stepped forward When this was done he said, "All of you who have made the one step forward are now members of the United States Armed Forces." The first thing came to my mind was, "YIKES," I must' be dreaming. The next thing we marched down main street behind a band toward the train station to board the train to Ft. Lewis, Washington, that was an eerie feeling. And to think of it there were guys who cried because their name was not called. Finally it dawned on me that I was not dreaming when they stuck that needle in my arm for one of those shots, then fall in, hurry and wait, hurry and wait, always in line waiting for something. Everyday it was something new until the final assign ment to what you were most suited for and to the area or camp to be sent to basic training. I ended up in Ft. Stewart, Georgia. Ahh-Nah-Chi-Un-Wi Thanksgiving powwow Headline Incorrect rescheduled for March' The headline "Register children now for Head Start classes" was a mistake. The article was intended to inform parents as to how open ings in the Head Start and Tribal Preschool programs were filled. Head Start registration for the next school year starts in May and will be announced prior to that time. The Thanksgiving Mini Pow wow, originally set for November ,22, 23 and 24, 1990, has been rescheduled for March 1, 2 and 3, 1991 at the Agency Longhouse. Raffle tickets will be the same as before. A few months ago, I attended the National Congress of Ameri can Indians Conterence in Albu querque, New Mexico and got ac quainted with a staff of the now Narconon Chilocco New Life Cen ter, an alcohol and drug rehabili tation center. I met and spoke with Ms. Vicki Flucard Smith, Director of Com munity Relations and a graduate of Chilocco in the 50's. She up dated me on what was and is happening with Chilocco and had photos and posters up. The cam pus looks pretty much the same and most of the original buildings, but modestly renovated, are still being used. I received the following letter from Ms. Smith: "Dear Mrs. Cali ca, we are so happy you stopped by for a visit and to meet us at the NCAI conference. We appreciate your interest in Narconon Chi locco New Life Center and are now in the process of sending you the information which you requested. Information wanted for book To the Editor, We are gathering information for a book about the town of Clear Lake, Utah and people who lived there.
