PACE 4 January 11,1991 Warm Springs, Oregon Spilyay Tymoo Editorial E Coosh EEWA (The way it is) Letters to the Editor ft w - "Spifttit o'.: i The cold spell has caused several problems here in Warm Springs as the temperatures dipped well below zero for sev eral days. There were home fires where families lost everything they own. Wood stoves seem to be a popular source of heating the home in recent years. Some say its cheaper than the electrical heating systems. Makes one wonder if it is cheaper in the long run to burn wood for heat ing purposes. People don't con sider the time it takes to go out into the woods to find good dry trees for wood and the time put into cutting down the trees, cut ting it up into blocks hauling the wood in which is wear and tear on vehicles. The time it takes to split the blocks into smaller chunks of wood so it can be placed into the wood burner. But there are the Macho Men who just enjoy getting out into the wilds and doing it for themselves. After all the back breaking chores are done and the fire is crackling in the stoves there is always the danger of a home catching on fire. People should take precaution and check all the pipe connections or anything that may cause a fire in the home. Some people feel they have everything under control but before one knows it fire breaks out and a home is greatly damaged or completely des troyed. It sure don't take much of an accident to start a fire and "Puff up goes your home on fire. The electrical heating systems are just as dangerous to homes as the wood stoves from shorting out of wires or other freak accidents ihat cause a fire. So in any means it always pays to use common sense and watch for any type of bad connections either with the wood stoves or the electrical wiring. Safety first just like a man who wears a pair of suspenders along with a belt to hold up his pants, he's really sure he won't drop his trousers. I am also very thankful to each and every one of the church members and relatives who have offered prayers on my family's behalf. "Munict" Starla "Charlie" Green Dream returns land to Native Americans To the Editor, A few weeks back a crime was committed at Wizard Falls Hatch ery. Lots of people felt a vague sort of uneasiness about it, I'm sure, and some even openly felt bad. but not a whole lot was said and nothing was done. I speak of the killing of the great black bear. Would that I had been To the Editor, To all our Friends and relatives. We are sorry we have taken so long in expressing our"thanks"to you all. Take the road to a happier life. Love, prayers appreciated To the Editor, We want to thank all you dear people who honored us with a special dinner at the Longhouse recently. We appreciate all the work and effort necessary for such a good time. Thank vou for the there to plead for his life, for what had he done that was so terrible? He ate a few albino fish, and maybe a few other fish. He intimidated people in his fearlessness, in im posing his rights to the land, his right to simply be true to himself, to what he was. I have a dream. Unlike Martin Luther King's, however, mine doesn't stand a leaf in a bonfire's chance of coming true. My white brothers an sisters will in fact view me with suspicion in even airing this dream, but it is to give this nation we quite literally stole back to its Native people, to give it back to the Indians. Not without a con dition, however. The condition would be that they try to forgive us. For stealing their land, for raping it, for leaving it gouged and bleeding, perhaps mortally wounded. That they try to forgive our callousness, our greed, our avarice, our disharmony, our disrespect. If our Native Americans could find it in their hearts to forgive us, and, given their innate wisdom, I think they would, maybe they'd be willing to teach us as well. Maybe Appreciation extended to family To the Editor, My appreciation. A special thanks to my parents Tony Alias Big Rat and Mercedes Suppah, and to my brothers Leif, Obedt and Lil Bull Owl, for their support while running for "Jr Court," in the 1990 Warm Springs Holiday Basketball Tourney. Also to my uncle Satch for considering me for a candidate. Allen & Juanita Elston they would be willing to share with us the knowledge of our Oneness with the land, the forest, the animals including the snake, the centipede, the bear, the wolf and with each other. Maybe they would be so kind as to show us how to live in harmony with all things, to ingrain in us a respect for the Spirit of the forest, the stream, the bear. "You don't just go out and indis criminately kill." they would coun sel. "You must never find great sport in taking the life of an animal, for that would be pro foundly disrespectful." We listen, we really listen, and our hearts are full. This is Wisdom and Truth and our hearts know it. We are finally learning. Nevertheless, the nightmarish aspects of my dream take us down a different path. We offer the land back to our Native brothers and sisters, asking forgiveness. "Oh we forgive," they answer, looking distantly into our very eyes. "But we no longer want the land. It cannot be saved. It is too late." Sincerely, Marilyn Guinnane Sisters respected very much. I'll miss her, for she had a great influence on me. My prayers also go out to my uncle Wissie, Alfredine, Ava and Glen don Smith with love.
