Santa Clara rolls over
Santa Clara, California were the
winners of the 1989, holiday bas
ketball tournament for the second,
straight year. Again, it was Law
rance, Kansas who were the
runner-up team. Santa Clara
jumped out to an early lead and led
throughout the game keeping Kan
sas just where they wanted thci
and that was Kansas trying to play

for the Santa Clara team with 32

Burns Hilanders top Madras White
The Burn's Hilanders came into
town Friday night and surprised
the Madras White Buffaloes by
eking out a 51-50 win over the
No. 3 rated team in the state,
according to the latest polls at
that time.
After jumping out to a 7-0 lead
at the start of what appeared
might be a one-sided game, all of
a sudden the lid closed on the
Buff basket and it looked like
they coulcnt even buy a basket.
When the first quarter ended.
Burns edged up trailing by one
point. 7-6.
In the second quarter the
Hilanders out-scored the Buffs
and went into the locker room at
intermission, leading by one
point. 25-24.

Tompkins added 23 points with 6
field goals and he was 1 1 out of 12
at the charity stripe. Dave Smith
contributed 22 points of which 8
were field goals and he was 6 or 6 at
the free throw line. Leo Blackbull
added 12 points on 4 field goals
and he was 4 of 4 at the foul line.
Vance Sundown also chipped in 12
points all for 6 field goals. Ray
Penola, Jon Mathies and Louis
Bazard each added one fielf goal
apeice for 2 points each. Santa
Clara had 21 fouls and one techni
cal called on them during the game.
Lindy Waters of Lawrence,
Kansas led all scorers for the game
with a total of 37 points. He had 14
two pointers, 2 three pointers and
he was 5 of 6 at the free throw line,
he also had 4 fouls. Steve Daney
added 29 points in the losing cause
with 1 1 two pointers, 1 three poin
ter and he was 4 of 4 at the charity
stripe, but in the closing minutes of
the game he fouled out. Earnie
Stevens chipped in 1 7 points with 7
buckets and he was 3 of 4 at the
foul line and had 4 fouls. Marvin
Shade added 10 points with 2 field
goals and he was 6 of 6 at the free
throw line and had three fouls.
Mike Daney 4 points, Jessie Men
doza 2 and he also picked up a big
"T", technical foul in other words.
It was a tough game but when the
final buzzer sounded, Santa Clara
had the winning margin and the
championship.
The team USA topped Chico,
California for third place by the
score of 114-102. Brooker Jones
topped all scorers in that game
with 27 points, followed by Buck
Jones with 231 Ken Pemberton 22,
Merle Smith and Wes Scott each
had 14 points apeice, Jarvis Yel
lowrobe 12 and Randy Settler 2,
and Leland Topsky.
Randall Cook led the scoring for
Chico with 25, Mike Wilbur 22, A.
Hernendez 18, Dave Tucker 17,"

Hilanders kept the heat on the
Buffs and out-scored them 9-3.
Going into the fourth and final
period the Buffs made a game
effort to overtake the Hilanders
but the ball would not fall
through the hoop as the final
buzzer sounded giving the
Hilanders and one point victory
over the Buffs.

Girls win GOL opener
The Hilanders visioned an
upset as they trailed during the
first part of the game and striking
back in the second half after
Madras and built up a big lead in
the first two quarters of play. The
Buffs, leading 35-21 at
intermission, sort of went cold in
the second half. Laura Sahme
was the only one to get a field
goal during the entire third
quarter and the Buff gals were 6
out of 19 foul shots in the qurter,
that's how cold they went. In the

to face the Vale Vikings and the
Ontario Tigers, as both teams are
were a little better, hitting the
hoop. They came out with one
three pointer by Foster who
zeroed in from long range and
they got three field goals and
were 3 out of 7 at the foul line.
The Buff .girls were able to do
better in the final stanza but still
they were out-scored 17-14 by the
Hilanders. With the big first half
time lead keeping victory within
grasp. Burns was called for 29
fouls while Madras was called for
18.
