What's happening to the good
old holiday season nowadays?
At one time, Thanksgiving and
Christmas were real meaning
fuL.the excitement that went
along with the thought of those
holidays approaching.
Today, it appears that all
people are interested in is trying
to make a fast buck without the
consideration of the season and
the joys that go along with
them. One of the biggest draw
backs is people take all the
meaning out of Christmas and
what it stands for by starting to
advertise Christmas before
Thanksgiving is even thought
of. Christmas ornaments are
displayed in October. They ad
vertise Christmas albums and
display Christmas decorations
much too early.
Once upon a time, Christmas decorations and displays never
appeared until a day after Thanksgiving. And there was the big
Christmas parade on the "tube," to officially open the holiday
season. It was more exciting for kids to go downtown after
Thanksgiving to look at all the decorations and bright lights with
nothing in the air except Christmas. It reminded people of the real
reason we have Christmas. There was a time that Christmas did
not compete with all the goblins during the Halloween season. The
way it is today, it appears that Santa Claus is a Halloween charac
ter and is trying to win the prize for the biggest joke of the
Halloween party. Maybe we should send this to Nat Shaw at radio
station K WSI, where he can read the line, "the way it was." Yep,
people do go through the motions at Christmas but the spirit has
long faded away and the joys are really not there anymore.
Well, maybe times are changing and I haven't caught the boat
and have been left way behind and have a lot of catching up to do.
Maybe the script will read, "The shepherds gave thanks to-the
angels while they were doing their trick or treating..." Christmas
seems to be old stuff and outdated nowadays.
I still believe that the Christmas season should be like it used to
be in the past and that's after Thanksgiving....(NEIGH)
To the Editor,
In our efforts to share our good
fortune, and encourage our young
people, we have some information
regarding George Ike, who is
attending the University of New
Mexico.
George has been in Albuquerque
since May, 1989. During the sum
mer, he attended a NASA-sponsored
summer school session.
NASA then provided a part scho
larship for George's first term at
the University. The tribal educa
tion department has also been pro
viding support during his stay.
George, as of this writing, is
maintaining a 3.5 GPA. We are
extremely proud of him because of
his efforts and knowing the intense
competition universities are known
to have.
Not only did we want to brag
about our nephew, but we also
wanted to encourage those young
people we know have the capabili
ties of doing the same.
For those interested in dropping
George a line, his address is: 303
Princeton S.E. Apt. 9, Albuquer
que, New Mexico 87106.
