Buffs win Homecoming game against Nyssa
"Way to go!" A football game as
I see's um. The thrills of a home
coming victory is always what a
team wants and that's just what the
White Buffaloes got on Friday
night, October 20, 1989 in the Buff
stadium.
The thrills of victory were very
gratifying as a capacity crowd saw
their home team come from behind
and polish off those pesky Nyssa
Bulldogs, 34-1 6. The victory capped
a busy night for the entire student
body, with all the excitement of
choosing a homecoming queen and
all that stuff.
With the Buffs kicking off and
Nyssa having the first shot with the
ball, a fired up Bulldog squad almost
ran at-will, piling up the yardage
on the Buff's defense and scoring
first without much trouble leaving
the fans a little astonished at how

well they moved the ball. On the
other hand, the Buffs took" the
kick-off and after a series of downs
they were stopped cold and had to
punt the ball away. At the end of
the first quarter the Bulldogs were
leading 8-0. Their TD came on a
run by Talbot with Huston run
ning in the two-point try. In the
second quarter, the Bulldogs bul
lied their way down field for another
six as Huston hit paydirt from two
yards out, another run for two
more points, this time it was Perez
who ran the ball in.
Whoa!!! What's happening here?
The Buffs sort of woke up a little
finding themselves trailing 16-0.
Finally ol' standby Mike Holcomb
sprang loose on a pitch out from
quarterback Ryan Boyle and he
outran everyone for a 57 yard
touchdown. A pass fell incomplete

for the two-point try. That must
have felt pretty good because Hoi
come was able to get in again on a
six-yard run, which was set up by
Jason Harris who had the crowd
whooping it up as he broke loose
for the real big gainer. Harris broke
loose a couple of times but was
caught from behind just short of
the goal line each time. The teams
went into intermission with Nyssa
leading 16-14.
In the third quarter things were
getting "sort of sluggish and the
teams battled each other when the
Buffs had the ball on the third and
long, Tony Holiday got a hold of
the pig skin and dashed his way
into the end zone putting the Buffs
ahead for keeps, but a pass for two

Wow, what a game...
The ball carriers were not the

Buffs tame Bulldogs
The Madras White Buffaloes
closed out their home games with
commanding triumph over the vis
iting Baker Bulldogs on Friday
night. October 27, by the score of
33-0. This all happened in the first
half of the entire game. At the end
of the first quarter the score was
20-0 and the Buffs added two more
TDs in the second quarter to cap
their scoring for the night.
The defensive unit really put the
pressure on the Baker team, stop
ping their drives all evening long.
They shut down the running attack
and put a lot of pressure on their
passing game. Scott Moses inter
cepted two passes, one out of the
arms of a Baker receiver in the end
zone to stop a Baker drive. There
were several tough defensive plays
by Martinez and Adams who put
pressure on the quarterback all
evening long. There was some good
blocking and opening up the holes
for the ball carriers by the linemen
on the Buff offensive unit made it
possible for the ball carriers to
cross the goal line for their scores.
Harris hit pay dirt first, smash
ing in from four yards out with
Justin Chester kicking the extra
point to put the Buffs out 7-0. The
second score came on a one-yard
run by Holcomb, and again the
kick was good by Chester making
the score 14-0. After a series of
downs, Baker punted and Holcomb
ran the ball back for the TD but a
holding infraction was called on
the Buffs which brought the ball
back. Boyle hit Tony Holiday for
seven, and came right back and hit

Remo Smith for a big gainer and a
first down. Harris crossed the goal
for his second TD. A bad snap
from center caused Boyle to roll
. out and his pass was incomplete.
Buffs were ahead 20-0 at the end of
the first quarter. The Buff defense
rose to hold the Baker team after a
couple of first downs they punted
and Tony Holiday almost broke
loose but a Baker defender was
able to get him. But a few plays
later Holcomb ran the ball in and
Chester's kick was good, putting
the Buffs out 27-0.
The final score came when the
Buff defense sloped the Baker
offense and they were forced to
punt. The detemrincd Buffalo
defense broke through to block the
punt and Joel Martinez picked the
ball out of the air and ran it in from
57 yards out, this time Chester's
kick went wide but the Buffs were
out front 33-0, as time ran out, end
ing the first half of play.
In the second half, Jake Cochise
took the chores at quarterback and
a host of backup players who played
the remainder of the game. Neither
team could muster any kind of a
drive for the two final quarters,
where they played head to head
until time ran out with the final
score of 33-0 and the third win in a
row for the Buffs.
Their final league game will be
"against league-leading Ontario,

Ontario field. Game time is 7:30

will be aired on local raido station

while the Buffs have an eight win,
three loss record. But with the help
of the Burns Hilanders, who beat
the Baker Bulldogs, putting them
out of contention for any kind of
play-off with the Buffs, Madras
clinched the number two spot.
The Buffs will have their hands
full right from the start, but that's
to be expected when a team reaches
the state play-offs. The Buffs are a
team that can give any team a run
for the money behind regulars Nikki
Courtney, Jocelyn Moses and Carol
Miller, along with the rest of the
Buff Squad. So, things could be
pretty interesting during the tour

everything was all over, Erica Harl

event. Erica had quite a day for

division.
The keyhole race saw plenty of
disqualifications as the riders'
