Math skills can be honed by
engaging students in simple chores
such as counting items to be laundered.
For older students, the NEA-
backed program suggests activities
that range from scrutinizing adver
tising to planning a special trip for
friends or family by figuring out
the transportation, travel time and
cost.
"The home is the first learning
place for children and parents are
the first teachers in every child's
life," stresses NEA's Geiger. "If we
can build a strong love for learning
and respect for education in the
home of every child, schools and
educators will have a stronger
foundation on which to build for
the future."

Provide basics to children
Do you always provide proper
food, clothing, shelter, supervision
and medical care for your child?
Failure to do so may be considered
neglect. None of us is perfect, but
we need to strive to ensure that our
faults are not jeopardizing our child
ren's health and happiness.
