As the model site for science curriculum development for the state of Oregon, this group of teachers is well on its way to achiev ing this goal. They will culminate their first year of study and training this summer when they will write instructional units to use next year. Throughout the next two years they wi!' continue to receive training write more units. At the end of this three year period, the state depart ment will begin to develop other elementary schools science pro school! by Saphronla Coochlse Craig Smith is 17 years old and is a member of the Warm springs tribe. His parents are Norma Thor ton and Daryl Smith. His grand mother is Marena Miller. All reside in Warm Springs. Smith enjoys swimming and weight lifting. Other interests in clude hunting and fishing. Smith has participated in cross country but his favorite sport is basketball. His favorite class and teacher at MHS is Graphic Arts and Phil Comingore. His outlook of the past school years is, "IVe had a lot of fun, but I wish I could do it all over again." His feelings about this being his last year in school. "I'm going to miss school a lot, but the year went by too fast for me." Friends and teachers is what he will miss the most about high school. His career choices include arts and carpentry. His college choice will be either a trade school or junior college. He would like to comment. "I wish everyone good luck! And stay in school!" The growing assistance and sup port our school receives from the education committees, parents and other community members has been invaluable in building our program. The staff and students depend on community assistance to help the children develop a strong sense of purpose for their school efforets. It was the WSE parent committee that helped organize the rummage sale on June 7, to cam money to buv supplies for the science project. can by Saphronla Coochlse Stacy Rae Burke (Fast Horse) is 17 years old and is a senior at Mad ras High School. She is the daugh ' ter of Stephanie Heath and Frank lin Fast Horse of Warm Springs. Her grandparents are the late Wal ter Heath, Sr. and Ellen Heath. She has one brother, Miles, who is a freshman at MHS. Stacy is of Warm Springs, Wasco, Yakima and Sioux des cent. She is currently trying out for the high school soft ball team. Her favorite sport, though, is basket ball. Her favorite teacher is Rod Chester and her favorite class is economics. Burke's outlook of her past school years, as she states, is "I had a lot of fun and I also learned a lot." She feels that her last school year is going too fast, but in a way, she is glad. Being with friends is what she will miss most about her high school years. They can really mess vou up." v; U i A i; j7 Stacy Rae Burke Williams chooses graphic arts field by Saphronia Coochlse Eighteen-year-old Paul Williams is of Creek, Muscogee Nation des cent. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Stan Williams. His grandmother is Dortha Massey of Redbluff, Cali fornia. He has one brother, Scott, age 22. Paul's special interests include bike riding, planes and space. He has participated in football, basket ball and golf. He is currently a member of the high school varsity golf squad. His favorite sports are golf and basketball. His favorite classes and teachers include Gra phic Arts with Phil Comingore and Accounting with Larry Larson. Special awards Paul has received in basketball his junior year include being chosen honorable mention. In golf, his team placed fourth in the Madras Invitational. Individu ally he placed sixth at the district play-offs. He also was awarded honorable mention for the season. During his senior year in basket ball, Williams received first team all-league and honorable mention all-state. Williams was also selected Get involved by Saphronia Coochise Shuwna Dee Chichcnoff is IS years old. She is of Cherokee descent. Her parents are Gerald and Arva Chichcnoff. The last of those articles appear on this page and Saphronia, herself, also a 1 989 graduate of M HS, is featured. "Soap," as she is sometimes called, is of Warm Springs, Wasco, Hoopa, Hopi and Yakima descent. Her mother is Libby Chase and her 1 Saphronia Coochise ' s . . - ' ' --' f ' ; Hanglng J by Saphronla Coochlse Corey Lee Scott is 18 years of age and is of Warm Springs, Yakima descent. He is the son of Kanim Smith, Sr. and Lucy Rose Scott. His grandfather is Alvis Smith, Sr. Leonard and Evelyn Scott, now deceased, were also his grandpar ents. Scott has two sisters and four brothers. Corey enjoys just hanging out with friends and playing basket ball. Going to school and attending each class is a special interest to him. His favorite class is personal finance with Joe Blincoe. Boxing, basketball and baseball are a few sports he enjoys participating in. Boxing is at the top his is list. Special awards that Corey has received are numerous trophies in boxing. His outlook of the past school years, he states is, "pretty fun. I got along with a lot of teachers and friends." Paul Williams in activities cntsurc Mr. and Mrs. Despainand Mr. and Mrs. Chichcnoff. She has two brothers. Rick and Steve along with one sister, by the name of Marci. Special interests of hers include snow ami water skiing, exercising and horse back riding. The sports that Shaw na has taken part in are volleyball and cheerleading, her favorite was volleyball. Her favor ite elas at M IIS is art, as Bonnie Souers is her favorite teacher. Her outlook of the past school years as she staled, "I found that the past school years have been a great deal of lun and enjoyable." Her feelings about this being her last year of high school, she said they have gone by really fast for her. Shawna staled. "I'll miss the association with my friends, "when asked what she will miss the most about high school. Fashion design or Beauty School are her career choices, while I'hagen.s in Bend or I'IDM in I os Angeles, California arc her college choices. She would like to comment to the remaining students, "If I had to do it all over , again, I would get more involved with school activities." on with future father is Llbridge Coochise. Her grandparents are the late Guy Chase, Delilah and Roy Heath, Sr. and Jacob Coochise. Living in Phoenix, Arizona is her paternal grandmother, Beulah Coochise. Saphronia has a keen interest in journalism and will be attending Mt. Hood Community College this fall in pursuit of that career. She has worked for Spilyay half days during the 1988-89 school year while on a student work program. Saphronia is interested in sports and has participated in basketball, Softball and golf and received let ters in all three. Ths interest in sports earned her the sports edi tor's position on the high school newspaper. Participation in those activities is what Saphronia will miss most when she enters college. As for school, Saphronia is anx ious to get on with the future. "The past has been very hard for me due to things I can't control," she said, referring to a learning disability caused by a serious head injury when she fell from a pickup at age four. "I am very proud of myself for making it through my senior year." Saphronia encourages remaining students at MHS to "try hard but have some fun...I wish everyone pood luck!" In addition, Williams made all tournament team selection in the Madras Holiday Tournament, the Happy Rock Invitational and the Seaside Invitational. He is a three-year letterman in football, a two-year letterman in basketball and a four-year letterman in golf. His outlook of the past school years, as he states, "They went by fast but could have been better. I do not wish to go through it again." His feelings about this being his last year in school, he said, "It went by very fast. I had a lot of fun. I had a disappointing basketball year, but I am ready to go on." The day-by-day routine is what Williams will miss the most about high school. As for a career, Williams has chosen Graphic Arts. His college plans are to attend New Mexico Military Institute as a basketball scholar. He would like to comment, "For any teachers, coaches or aides I ever participated for, thank you!" Make something of yourself LoriSwitzler by Saphronia Coochise Lori Switzler is 17 years old and of the Warm Springs, Wasco and Yakima descent. Her parents are Maxine Switzler and the late Delton Switzler. Her grandparents include, Jasper Switzler of Yakima, Wash ington, Ruby Coone Smith (Pater nal), Edna and Linton Winishut (Maternal), all of Warm Springs. Lori has four brothers; Victor, Wen dell, Jay and Clint, a 1988 graduate of MHS. She also has two sisters; Valorie and Eydie. In the past she has participated in the following sports, track, basketball and cross country. Track was a favorite. Senior English with Pete Carlson and Civics with Rod Chester were her favorite classes and teachers. Her outlook of the past school years she states, "I could have done better in school but I messed around and didnt take my education ser iously. I am trying to improve." Her feelings about the final year of school she states, "My last year has been one of the funniest, most crazy years of school so far." When asked what she will miss the most about high school she said, "111 miss seeing a bunch of young people congregated in one place." Business Management or office management are her career choices. Southern Oregon State College in Ashland is her college choice. She would like to comment to the remaining stud ents of M HS.
