Page 4 june2, 1989 Warm Springs, Oregon Spilyay Tymoo Editorial E Coosh EEWA (The way it is) Letters to the Editor "Spilyay Spealts" Words attempt to express love of friends, family The weather was not very good over the Memorial Day weekend. But despite the bad weather, the roads were pretty crowded, but not the ideal weather for the campers. Many campgrounds are still closed because of snow on the roadways. Well, like the words go in a song, "It's a long, long way from May to September," where the weather will become hot and ideal for camping. Even though the weather was uncooperative, many people ob served Decoration Day. There were all kinds of services across the country with various Veterans groups observing those who gave their lives for their country in all the wars of the past. Family plots at the cemetery were also visited by relatives who decorated them with flowers. No matter what the situation may be, there are always those people who have no se.ise of pride or have no brains at all and should be stuck away in a mental institution and forgotten, those who vandalize and damage property of sacred value. Take the memorial stone carrying the names of all servicemen who were killed in action fighting for this country. Vandals threw white paint on the stone. Others were out des tructing property by breaking windows out of heavy equipment and doing other damage to property. Those people should be locked up and forgotten. It's bad to see senseless people on the lose. There are a lot of people who still wave Old Glory down at the court house. Memorial Day weekend is a kick-off for summer travel as people travel to all sorts of activities during the summer months. Some go to pow wows, rodeos, vacations and just plain family outings for the day. It's always good to have the nice warm weather around after some cold months of winter just past. My daughter, Jewell Leah VanPelt, was killed in a tragic accident on April 7, 1988. I never thought that I'd make it this far. First, I'd like to let Sylas and Prusanna Williams know that I love them for their prayers and guidance; my supervisor Marge Rouse, for her understanding through this year; Betty Lucio, Uncle James Wolf, you truly will not be forgotten for your support; my sisters Charlotte and Neda I coudnt have made it this far with out you. Thanks for being so close, and dropping things to help out, sometimes leaving your families to come hold me. Love you; Jimmy Wesley, you're so thoughtful, mak ing time to paint and change the room around, for all the time you've spent just being here; My children, I truly do love you, for your time you've spent with me, sharing the babies with me. That's what makes my day is to hold one of my grand children. It sure takes things off my mind, all your support and help during the Pi-Ume-Sha memorial and tnc main one on April 15. I couldn't have pulled it through without you. We all learned some thing through this. I knew you all had to give up a lot, for all the time you spent at the house. We surly know how a close family feels when we lose one;My children Levi and Pearl (Prencncia and Jenny) Van Pelt, Robert and Marclla (Tracy, Sadie, Elsie, Robert, Neda, Jalcah). Sam. Chct and Becky (Mychcal, HI), Tony and Tales (Danny and Baby Ann) VanPelt. Lillie and Lil Eliza VanPelt Wolfman. The memorial will not be forgot ten, for all that came: my cousins from Pendleton, aunties from Nisqually, relatives from Wash ington; all my children and my children's people, a very big thank you for all the thoughts and pray ers. The Indian names came through beautiful. All the children's family, you made this possible, for the gifts and handshakes they received. The cooks Mary Sam, Nancy John son, Kathleen Foltz and Ursclla, the meal was great. Again, no words can express my real feeling of love for you all. Jewell Leah VanPelt'a Mother Eliza Brown Friends, relatives help in finding peace To my friends and family: I have three reasons for writing this letter. My first one is to thank my friends and my family for all your ongoing love and support. In August of 1988, 1 brought my brother, Tony Nejal. home to his final resting place. My logic told me he would finally rest in peace. Yet, I found it difficult to find peace for my own spirit and e- COCC News The Central Oregon Community College Answer Van is sche duled for Tuesday, June 6 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.at Macy's Market in warm Springs. Parents to hold rummage sale Warm Springs Elementary Par ents' Club and the teachers will be having a rummage sale in the WSE gym on June 7 and 8. It will begin immediately following the end-of-the-year Powwow at 3:30 p.m. and will run until 6:00 p.m. The remain ing items will be sold the next day from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The money being raised will be used to purchase supplies for our science program. As the elementary model site for science curriculum development for the state of Oregon, the teachers will be spending two weeks in June writing science activities. Once they write this scries of activities, they will require additional funds to purchase the supplies required to make this science program "come alive."The activities will allow the children to carry out more "hands on" experiments, in order to dis cover the concepts and p cesses which form the basis for an under standing ot the world ot science. The children and teachers need your support to raise these funds. Please bring your donated items to the school before June 5. The donated items are being stored on the stage in the gym. With your help this rummage sale can be a huge success. The children will reap the results of a successful fund raiser throughout ncxtyearas their science program becomes their favorite subject. You may be of even further assistance, by joining the WSE Parent Club on Monday, June 5 from 7-8:00 p.m. to price the items. Parents will be meeting in the gym for one hour to sort and price all of the donated items. The more help we get at 7:00, the faster we will get the job done. Thank you for your continuing support and assistance. It you have any questions, please call the school at 553-1 128. v 'S7 A I fli nil - ' mnr" I motions. I would like to give particular thanks to my Aunt Elvina Switzlcr and her daughter Bculah Calica. Both were at my side the entire time. There were countless details to remember and with their help everything went smoothly. The second reason for this letter is to announce that there will be a memorial lunch and give-away in honor of my brother on June 23 at 12:00 p.m. at the Pi-Ume-Sha grounds. Lastly, I am very proud of my Indian heritage and tradition. I've returned over the last several years during Pi-Ume-Sha. This year I will be returning again, as a joiner. Joining with me will be my daugh ter. Charmagnc and my brother's (Tony's) two daughters, Paislyand Sweetwater. I consider this to be quite an honor. Once again, my love and thanks to everyone who was there to help during my grief and sorrow. Now I truly understand what it means to finall) "come home" again.
