Madras JV softball up-date Christ el Leonard at bat in the game with Estacada on the Madras diamond April 1. The Buffs swept the double-header 10-0 and 10-3. The Madras White Buffalo girls varsity softball team have a five win, one loss record over Hermiston and Estacada and splitting with the Pendleton Bucks on their field. This weekend the Buffs travel to Gladstone for a double header. WS hosts 2nd Annual Warrior's Tourney The second annual Warriors Challenge Boys Basketball Tour nament took place March 25 and 26 at the Warm Springs Commun ity Center. This year's tournament was dedicated as a tribute to the grandmothers of our players. Three of the grandmothers, Margaret Sup pah, Marena Miller and Kathleen Moses, were each presented a rose and a Warriors Fan Club Bag. This year's participants were Lapwai Jr. Wildcats, Yakima Jets, Chiloquin Eagles, Simnasho Road runners, Columbia River Chinooks, Warm Springs Recreation and the two host teams, the Warriors and Warriors Pt. 2 "The Sequel". Sam Wolfe of the Roadrunners was voted by the tournament rules committee to be "M r. Inspiration." Lapwai's David Cunningham earned the"Most Valuable Player" award. The "Mr. Hotshot" sweat shirt went to Steve Watah of Chilo quin. All-Star sweatshirts were pres ented to: Aaron Gould, Lapwai; Obedt Suppah, Brian Boltz, Sim nasho; Chet Van Pelt, Lamar Jack son, Warriors; Derrick Hatcher, Chiloquin; Silas Poitra, "The Sequel"; D. Wahsise, Yakima; Jason Thomas, WS Rec; Rueben Henry, Chinooks. The "Atta-Boy" awards went to Claude Smith, III, Warriors; Shane Henry, Chinooks; David Morrell, W.S. Rec; Chips Kalama, "The Sequel"; Cory Stwyer, Yakima. The Marine team consisted of Marian "Mean Man" Miller, "The Sequel"; Ricky Cunningham, Lap wai; Macklin Kalama, Chinooks; William "Schnozz" Nappier, W.S. Rec; Keegan Riddle, Chiloquin. The Sportsmanship award and T-Shirts were presented to the Columbia River Chinooks. Lapwai beat Simnasho for the ' championship sweatshrts while thi" ' Warriors took third and Chiloquin finished in fourth place. Sweatshirts were presented to Jay Suppah,. Joyce Suppah and Whitney Miller from the host teams. The game ball was presented to the Warriors' coach, Enos Herkshan. Planning has begun for the third annual Warriors Challenge which will be a 14 and under tournament held in the spring of 1990. WS Reservation Runners plan May 12 Say No run The Warm Springs Reservation Runners are currently planning, with Warm Springs Elementary and the Alcohol Drug Program, the "Just Say No Run" on May 1 2. There will e a spaghetti feed on April 1 1 at the Warm Springs Ele mentary cafeteria, beginning at 5 p.m. or so. Cost will be $3.50 per adult plate and $1.50 per child plate. Proceeds will go the the Warm Springs Elementary School kids' kite making and T-shirt mak ing projects in preparation for the Just Say No run. We are still selling raffle tickets for Stan Kneeland's trip to the Bos ton Marathon. He will be leaving April 13. The drawing will be held on April 1 1 during the Spaghetti feed. The club is also planning the Pi-Ume-Sha run on June 24. T-shirts are in the making for the run, div isions have been decided and awards will be given. Duties will be assigned later. We hope that we can get input from people on what can be done to make the run a success. Call or write to any of the club officer with your suggestions and comments. Northwest Road Runners national champs 6 ' and under ..... 1 A' n I n rf Ua tMifno rvt The National Championship N.I.A.A. sixfoot and under bas ketball tournament was held here in Warm Springs, March 29, 30, 3 1 and April 1 , 1 989, where the Road runnrs emerged the champions. The Roadrunners got the jump on the Yakima Bucks right from the start and led throughout the game and in the fourth quarter they coasted to a 142-112 victory and the National Title. The end of the first quarter NWRR went ahead 26-2 1 , as Chuck Freemont popped in three two pointers and one three-point shot for nine points, Seymour Rueben added 8, Bob Main 4, Ryan "Smitty"Smith 3, and Jack McCor mick 2. Jim Wabonsee scored 9 points for the Bucks as he also had a 3-point basket. Bud Herrera got 7, Erwin ScabbyRobe 3, and Gary Pierce 2. In the second quarter Dion Smith cut lose on a 14 point scoring spree. Chuck Freemont added 8 points before fouling out in the second quarter, Main 7, Smitty 6. McCormickS, Reuben 4, as the NWRR team scored 44 points and led 70-52 at half time. D. Smith and J. McCormick kd the NWRR scorine in the3rd quar ter with 8 points apeice, Smitty 5, Larry Scott 4, Main and Chaz Mit chell each 2 apeice as they racked up 29 points. The Bucks were led lby Whitefoot with 11, Wabonsee 9, Shawn Van Pelt 2. In the fourth and final quarter Seymour Reuben scored 17, Scott 8, Main 6, Mitchell 5, Smitty 3, Big Rat 2 and J. McCormick 1 , as they burned the nets for 43 points in the 4th quarter. Bud Herrera poured in 18, Wabonsee 7, Pierce 4, E. Scab byRobe 2, Chief Sanchey 2, J. Scabby Robe 2 for the Bucks who scored 38 points in the final quarter but that was far below what they needed to overtake the NWRR team. There were no lead changes or ties during the game as the Road runners were never in any serious trouble during the game. For the Buck fans it was a long night, but for the Roadrunner fans it was bright and colorful. This is Big Rat's second National Champion ship team. His first one came in Oklahoma City, a couple of years ago. This was a good tournament where the competition was good in the final stages of the tournament. There were some no-shows that could have made the tourney more interesting if they had showed up. During every tournament there are the coaches who select a tour nament team of players who show outstanding performances during the tournament. The final standings were NWRR 1st; Yakima Bucks 2nd; WS Mag pies 3rd; Stonechild College 4th; Belcourt, S.D. 4th; and LaConnor, Wa. 5th. I he junior varsity softball team of Madras Senior High School traveled to Pendleton to take on the Bucks, Saturday, March 25. The Buffs and pitchers Saphronia Coochise and Kristi Miller took the double header loss to the Pen dleton Bucks. In the first game the score was 3 to 13 and the second game score was 6 to 20. Juanita Kalama received a hit in the first inning which got her a single. In the second inning Cory Spofford had a double as Rachelle Cooke made a single hit in the fourth inning. They then hosted Estacada Sat urday April I in a double header. The Buffs and pitcher Saphronia Coochise were victorious in both. The Buffs held a lead of 14 to 3. The first hit came in the opening inning, as sixth batter Coochise hit a double and collected three RBIs. Four batters ahead of her were walked on and loaded the bases and scored one run prior to her hit. Juanita Kalama also had a double with one out in the second inning as she and the following batters scored making the score 8 to 1 at the completion of 2 innings. Six runs were then completed in the third inning, making it 14 to the one from Estacada. The pitcher had three strike outs, one base on balls and five hits. They also won the second game 5 to 3. The Buffs were put out I through 3 into the first two innings as they also did to their opponents in the first three. The Buffs scored a run in the third making it I to 0. In the fourth inning, Estacada came out with two runs as the Buffs completed another making it 2 to 2 at the completion of four innings. In the fifth, Estacada remained scoreless as the Buffs added three more to their score making it 3 to 2. In the sixth the Rangers tried to make a comeback but only ralied one run which wasn't enough to catch the Buffs. Coochise totaled four strike outs, four bases on balls and five hits.
