PACE 4 April 7, 1989 Warm Springs, Oregon Spilyay Tymoo Editorial E Coosh EEWA (The way it is) Letters to the Editor "Spfyay Spealts" Candidate expresses ideas for future Wc arc pretty well set up with our new set of Tribal Coun cil. All ccccpt for the Agency Dictrict where there will be a run-off vote on April 25, to break a tie between Rita Squiem phen and Uren Leonard Jr. for the third seat from the Agency District. This term there will be some new people who will be making their first appearance as coun cilmen and of course there will be some repeats who have been voted back after a short absence. There are those who will remain in there for another term, and also there are those who just didn't seek another term. I believe it would be approp- late to congratulate the out going councilmen for the hard times they experienced while in office. The long hours spent making decisions which they thought were in the best interest of the Tribes. I congratulate them for making stands to do the best for the peoples' interest. There were a lot of hard feelings floating around during the last bonus issue, but they stood their ground for what they thought was right. Now we have a new set of council starting out. I just hope they apply themselves to their utmost to protect what we have today. We all say or heard the statement. ..it was wise planning from our forefathers who put us where we are today. Let's not sell them short and lose what they worked so hard for. So now voters in the Agency District will have to decide on who they want to fill the third seat. I'm confident everyone will consider the two candidates very carefully before deciding who to vote for. I would also like to praise those who ran, for their intent must have been for the good of theTribes'future. And for those who will take office for the next term, I wish you well. In loving memory of our Jewell Jewell Leah Van Pelt July 19, 1966 April 7, 1988 Saturday, April 15, 1989 at 10 a.m. Simnasho Cemetery Memorial services at the Agency Longhouse following Dinner and traditional services Van Pelt family Indian name giving All Family and Friends are invited To the Agency District Voters: want to say thanks to the members who expressed their con tinued confidence by voting for me. Good luck to Uren in his bid for a scat on Council. I would like to state very simply my qualifica tions for this important position that is the fact that I know right from wrong. I will not be going from door-to-door making prom ises to the people because when a person is elected to Council, that person carries only one vote when in Council. The only promise you will get from me is that 1 will cast my one vote to make decisions for you on the basis of common sense and good judgment. The Council needs more Council members who think long-range for the good of the tribe as a whole, while at the Friends forever.... Dedicated to Ronald Holliquilla, St. Family and Friends, same time try to help eligible peo ple get what they need in order to live from day to day. There are bas ics which tribal members need, which contribute to their well-being: A home and a job. lama person who supports building more homes and getting more tribal members into the work force. There are several capital projects which I feel our people need: one is the health facility which everyone needs to stay healthy; the early childhood education center, which our youngsters need to help bring them along good in their early years; a local shopping center to help promote economy on the reser vation and to help tribal members start their own businesses if they choose to do so. These are all good things for our reservation and we will have them eventually, but I feel they need to be done in steps. One thing at a time in phases, so that we don deplete our finances. The future of this reservation depends on leaders who have proven track records of making mature decisions. I don't have to tell you about my background since all of us who have lived, worked, and raised our children here know each other. I do feel that all Council members should serve as role models or examples for the people who elect them. Questions? Most of you know me as a straight-forward person there are no 'gray areas as far as I'm concerned. Answers guaran teed, now and in the future.
