Buff open road trip with a pair of wins Today, perched atop the GOL flag pole, are the Madras White Buffaloes after a successful sweep of their Eastern Oregon swing last weekend first tipping the Baker Bulldogs, 61-56, then the following night, whopped it to the Ontairo Tigers. 59 to 48. Well, it wasnt the Beast of the East on this trip as Baker was expected to be the one to watch on this trip. The Buffs held themselves together well and came through with the big win and kept their record unblemished. Paul Williams led the scoring with 17 points, Jeff Cordill had 16, Eric Peterson had 16 and Curt Cosgrove had 7. buffs pound Ontario for win On Saturday night, the Ontario Tigers tried to bottle up the inside to put the clamps on the White Buffaloes, but Aaron Schnicdcr came through with some three point shots, five to be exact, to break things wide open for the Buffs. Schnicdcr led the scoring for the Buffs with a total of 17, Peterson had 14, Williams and Cordill each had 9. The next game for the Buffs is at home as they prepare to host the Nyssa Bulldogs, who so far this year, have beaten the Baker Bul ldogs quite handily with the score of 61 to 48. Buffs notch another win In the game with Ontario the Buff girls put up a good defense to squeak by the Tigers46-45. Last Saturday night the Nyssa Bulldogs rolled into town hoping to get a noose on the hard charging Buffalo only to be turned away fac ing a 58-44 shellacking from the Buffaloes instead. Eric Peterson led the attack scoring 1 8 points for the night as Madras out scored the Bulldogs 11-8 after one quarter and 19-5 in the second quarter to give them a 30-13 half-time lead. It was a good defensive effort for the Buffaloes as they pretty well contained big 6' 7" Todd Sloggett, but in the third quarter Sloggett went on a little scoring spree of his own as Nyssa outscored the Buffs 17-11, sort of woke the Buffs up again to contain the big feller once again as the Buff went on to out score their opponents in the final stanza 17-14 to cap another Greater Oregon League win to bring their record to a 4-0 standing in league play. Besides Eric Peterson's 18 points Paul Williams and Asron Schneider each added 12 points apiece, Jeff Cordill 7, Curt Cosgrove 7, Jason Harris 2, Remo Smith, Segovia and McKenzie. Top scorer for Nyssa was Todd Sloggett with 24, Casad 5, Her nendez 4, Talbot 4, Bullock 3, Wrin kle 2, Knothe 2. On Friday night the boys travel to Burns for a league game with the Hilanders and the following week, February 3, they host the Baker Bulldogs and on Saturday night they host the Ontario Tigers with game time at 7:30 p.m. which can be heard on radio station K.WSO 91.5 FM, the Buff sports station. With pre-game session starting at 7:20. Kanim Smith's 23-point effort led the Buffs past the Bend Lava Bear freshman team by the score of 56 to 38. Tough defense caused turnovers to get the Buffs on the go to pile up another win against Central Oregon schools. Others scoring were Louis Seceda, 10; Kyal King, 9 and Z- man Smith, 8. The Buffs are holding a live win, two loss record at this point. The next outing for the Buffs will be against Redmond. The game will be played in the Warm Springs Community Center. Exercise classes offered- Freshman girls topple Cougars The Madras Freshman girls were on a roll last week, topping the Mt. View Cougars 55-30 on their home floor. Good pressure defense proved to be the key for the Madras girls as they created several turnovers that helped them run away with the game in the final quarter. Laura Sahme led the scoring for the Buffs with 1 9 points, and Becky Dodson had 1 1, giving the Buffs a big fourth quarter that led to the lopsided score. Madras fr. Girls handle Lava Bears The lady Buffaloes played host to Ontario Friday evening January 20. They sent their opponents home with a one-point loss. In the first quarter, the Buffs lead with 1 8 points to the Bulldogs' 1 3. At half-time the score was 32 to 1 7, a big lead for the Buffs. As the game progressed, the Tigers began to creep up on the Buffs, as they scored 16 points in the third quar ter. The score after three quarters of play was 40 to 33. In the final quarter of the evening, the Buffs had scored six points and the Tig ers 1 2, the last two of which were in the final seconds. The long shot by an Ontario play was put up and in and was counted as a two-point Just like the game with Mt. View, the score was very close going into the final quarter when the Buffs put some tough pressure defense on the Lava Bears and ran just about at-will to win, going away with the score of 67 to 43. It was almost a total one-sided fourth quarter when the Buffs tucked away another win. Shirley Allen led the scoring with 1 4, Becky Dodson had 1 3 and Laura Sahme had 12. Do you need to lose the few pounds you picked up over the holidays? Well, the Wellness office is offering nutrition and exercise classes that will help accomplish that goal and much more. Wellness director Eva Montee and her able assistants are offering exercise and nutrition classes every day of the week. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, Lucinda Green and IHS nutrition ist Lillian January will offer nutri tion and aerobics classes beginning at 5 p.m. at the Community Cen ter. The Tuesday classes consist of a half hour of nutrition followed by aerobics from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Aerobics are conducted from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursdays. Session began January 10 and will con tinue through March 14. Early Bird aeerobics are held Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. at the Com munity Center. Participants will work at their own pace. Pinky Beymer, Antoinette Pamperein and Viola Govenor in struct beginning, low impact aero bics on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Warm Springs Elementary gym. The 10-week session began Janu ary 9. Montee and Green offer diabetic chair exercises from 8 a.m. to 9 a. m. at the Community Center on M on days, Wednesdays and Fridays. All people are encouraged to partici pate as the class is not limited only to those with diabetes. Hand weight body conditioning is offerd from 12 noon to 1 p.m. at the Community Center on Mon days, Wednesdays and Fridays. The class is taught by Montee. The Madras freshman girls went on to win the game. On January 12, 1989, the Buff mat men traveled to Mt. View High School, to take on the Cou gars in a dual encounter. The meet turned out very interesting as the young Buff grapplers held their own against the older and more experienced wrestlers of Mt. View. It was in the light weight div isions where the Buffs showed power as Don Alire turned in a win in the 102 lb. class; Bryan Hopps pro vided an outstanding performance, winning his match. It was Chad Duffs win by forefeit that gave the visiting Buffs the nod for the win. Buffs net trophy On Saturday, the Nels Ochs Memorial Tournament was held in the Buff gym. Among the teams invited were the Hood River Eagles, the Burns Hilanders, Mt. View Cougars and the host White Buffa loes. Once again the Buff wrestlers had to hold things together where they topped Mt. View once again the same week by a very close margin. Don Alire won the 103 lb. title; Bryan Hopps took the 112; Justin Chester won the 1 19; Gerald Samp son took the 135, and, Shawn Bell won the 140 division. Other Buff w restlers who placed were Jarrod Sampson, third in the 125; Robert Rios, third in the 130; Otis Johnson, third in the 145; Jason Smith, third in the 152; Andy Frazier, third in the 160; MikeHoaglin, third in the 171 and Chad Duff, second in the heavy weight division.
