Santa Clara tops Lawrence,

day Basketball Tournament was
one of the first Indian tournaments
around in them days. The first
tournament had four teams where
the first championship went to
Toppcnish, Washington, with the
Warm Springs Magpies taking
second place.
Since then the tourney has grown
and has drawn teams from all parts
of the country. Some very good
teams have come and gone down
through the years and now its the
30th annual.
For the 30th Annual Tourna
ment it was Santa Clara, Califor
nia that topped Lawrence, Kansas.
The game was pretty even during
the first part of the game as Santa
Clara held a slim lead at the end of
the first quarter with the score of
25-23. They also held on to a small
lead at the half time intermission.
It was in the third quarter that took
the wind out of the sails for the
Kansas team as they were outscored
25-18 in that period. Hutt was six
for six at the foul line in that quar
ter. Ladesma was two for two while
Blackbull was one for two from the
charity stripe giving them 9 of 10 at
the free throw line, while Lawrence
could get only 1 8 points during the
quarter.
Santa Clara was pretty well in
control of things troughout the
game and were only whistled for 1 6
fouls while Kansas was called for
28 infractions during the game.
That's what usually happens to the
team that has to play catch up
where players become over-aggressive
and are called for fouls.
During the game Joe Hutt was 17
of 21 from the foul line and
Ladesma was II or 12 at foul
shooting. Vance Sundown scored
20, Joe Mathias II, Wes Hutt 10,
Leo Blackbull 3, Wayne Wakusa,
Clint Pelcher.
Scoring for the Lawrence, Kan
sas team were Ernie Stevens with
28, Steve LaCure 26, Steve Deaney
24, Monte Deaney II, Ray Parola
1, Mike Daney 4 and Bow Sch
neider 2.
Lapwai, Idaho was the winner
over the team USA for third place
by the score of 1 13-1 10 as Johnson
Leighton collected a total of 41
points to lead their attack for the
win. James Matheney added 28,
Rick Hernendez 17, Gem Leighton
13, Jack McCormick 12, and Rick
Gallegoes 2. Brooker Jones led the
Team USA with a total of 28, Buck
Jones 181, Seymour Reuben 14,
Merle Smith 8, Jarvis Yellowrobe
8, Scott Sumpter 7, Tracy Otis 3
and Rajidy Settler 1.
The final results of the tourna
ment was Santa Clara first, Law
rence Kansas second, Lapwai, Idaho
third and Team USA fourth. The
MVP award went to Joe Hutt of
Santa Clara. In an interview with
radio station KWSO, Joe Hutt
said he wanted to try and present to
the youth a role modle for them
where he never uses drugs and
alcohol to do what he does on the
basketball court. Drugs and alco
hol don't mix with athletics or for
anything else for that matter. Hutt
has turned out for pro ball and
almost made the team. He went to
the final cuts and went to minor
league basketball in the pro ranks.
Other awards were for the high
scorer, that was: Steve Ladesma
who scored a total of 44 points in a
single game. Vance Sundance
received the Mr. Hustle award.
Buffaloes win GOL league opener
The Madras White Buffaloes had
to come from behind to get by the
Vale Vikings in the GOL opener
here Saturday night, ecking out a
56-52 win.
From the outstanding work of
Paul Williams and Jeff Cordill
who scored 17 and 16 respectively,
let the Buffaloes to the win. With
just
about two minutes lett the
Buffs
were trailing 52-47, when
Sweetheart run
The Sweethearts run. sponsored
by the Warm Springs Reservation
Runners, will be held February 1 1,
1989.
The run. beginning at Simnasno,
Oregon at 10:00 a.m., w ill include a
2 mile course and a 4 mile course.
Courses will be pavement. Water
will be provided at the one mile
mark.

were deadly there as they slowly
set for Feb. 11

The meetings of the club allow

and finally held a slight lead over
the Buffs 27-25 at half time. In the
third quarter, the Buffs came out to
outscore the Vikings and regain the
lead 41-38 at the end of three. In
the final quarter the Vikings kept
the pressure on the Buffs and
regained the lead until the final two
minutes when the Buffs were able
to overtake the Vikings.
Besides the scoring of Williams
and Cordill, Eric Peterson had 12,
Schneider 5, Harris 4, Cosgrove 2,
Smith, Garcia and McKenzie.

This week the Buffaloes are on
the road as they swing to the east
ern part of the state to meet the
Baker Bulldogs and the Ontario
Tigers.

to cap the title from Ray Shike, Jr.
who rolled a 187. In the women's
division Helena Jones rolled a 200

191. To start it off in the men's
division Allie David rolled a 20 1 to
lose to Casey Jackson who got a
203. In the next game Lawrence
Shike rolled a 237 to Casey's 205,
then Lawrence topped Cliff Walder
with a 246 to 183 and the finals
were between Lawrence and Ray
Shike, Jr.
Angie Greene rolled a 145 to
Charlotte Shike's 189. In the next
game Charlotte rolled a 144 to
Sandra Greene's 136. The third
game Charlotte rolled a 188, Hel
ena Jones a 190 and the final was
between Helena and Lana.
