This is why I am approaching this project the way I have. You, who are tribal members, absolutely and without question, deserve to have access to all knowledge con cering your people. Those committees at the early stages were as follows: Educa tion, f ish and Wildlife, Land Use and Planning and Law and Order. Other committees followed as we became more sophisticated, such as the Housing committee. This committee was very important to me for 1 had a major concern for ourgrowing population. As federal funding became available, I accom panied our secretary treasurer, the late Vernon Jackson, to tour other reservations and cities and finally to Washington, D.C. to submit our plan and to accept the HUD pro gram for our reservation. I know that if we want our young (and older) people to leave alcohol and drugs alone, w hich arc making them do cray things. Wc must provide them an opportunity to learn good values. I know that Indian people have always taught their young, for centuries, how to he pnH nennlr You can personally help the young people in this community by making it possible for them to receive large doses of good know ledge about their culture and herit age. They need to be lifted up in our arms and and cared for by someone who is filled with skills and who is willing to share that knowledge with others. They need to hear us as a community group, cheering them on in every accom plishment. Donald Costello Judge, Warm Springs Tribal Court STATE. workshop appreciated: Co-dependency explained To the Editor, We're writing this letter to all the people who made the Kah-Nec-Ta workshop such a great success. The workshop on Alcohol and Drug Awareness has opened the eyes of many people, some of these people include family members of alco holics or drug addicts who were only able to see the addicted person as the one with the problem. The workshop helped some to see that there is a great amount of healing to be gained through these types of community events. Becoming aware of and identifying the powerful effects have on each and everyone of our community members is the beginning a new way of life. Thank you again for such an informative workshop. These types of community events are greatly appreciated! Sincerely, Carolyn A. Senior citizen's corner by Barbara Yaw My first trip with the Senior Citizens. We left the Senior build ing at 3:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 17. The road over Mt. Hood had packed snow but we had no trouble. The flight was okay. We changed planes at Phoenix, no problems. Flight arrived on sche dule in Albuquerque at 12:05 p.m. (one hour time different.) We had a three-and-one-half hour wait at the airport due to complications with van rental and baggage claim tickets. That evening the seniors who weren't still pooped out from the trip went to the powwow and rodeo. Friday Picked up another van and we went to the powwow, exhibits, K-Mart and the rodeo. Saturday We went to Old Town, Flea Market, Rodeo and mall. Sunday (Both vans). We toured an Indian museum and then went to a place called Acoma about 65 miles southwest of Albuquerque. There, we toured Sky City, an Indian pueblo still occupied located on top of a mesa. The tour was fantastic. The guide was very patient and explained everything. The church, graveyard, outside ovens, medicine lodges (men only), rain catching and the houses flat roofed, square dwellings made of mud and straw. The whole village was friendly and cheeful. The view in every direction was different and Howlak Tichum Susan (Tuckta) Moses The oldest "living member of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, Susan (Tuckta) Moses, died December 10, 1988 at Mt. Susan was a very traditional woman and shared her knowledge with numerous tribes in the North west. She loved people. She married William Moses, who died April 16, 1962. Their date of marriage is unknown. They had three chilldren. Susan was preceded in death by her father and mother, who died July 8. 1931 and January 4. 1936 respectively. Dropped everyone off at the motel to eat and went back to the rodeo to pick up the folks who went to the finals. Monday (Both vans) We went to a place called Santo Domingo about 30 miles north of Albuquerque. We were told that Indians hold a trade fair there. Everyone seemed to enjoy, looking at all the jewelry and visit-' ing. They had a Senior Citizens' buillding there and we were invited to eat lunch with them. We were all ' made to feel welcome. Wilson got.1 up and thanked everyone for their ; hospitality and kindness. He made introductions and added that our ladies would like to say their thanks with a song. Nettie was a complete "hit" with the crowd as they sang ; the "Laughing Song". Everyone laughed and clapped their their appreciation. The flight home was the rough est ride I have ever had on an air plane. All the Seniors were cool and calm through it all, I was a wreck but I'm glad they enjoyed the trip. I would like to add that if there were any complaints about the trip, please don't hesitate to call me or send me your questions. I would like to send a "thank you and I love you" to the one Senior Citizen who called me after we got back just to see how I was doing. Moses who died May , 1960: two brothers.
