Chemawa Girls lose The Chemawa girls basketball team lost to LaPine 69-44, in the opening round of the invitational basketball tournament held at the LaPine High School, on Friday night December 9, 1988. Chemawa came out on the short end of each quarter as LaPine took command right from the start to take a 16-8 lead at the end of the first quarter, and by halftime the score was 34-18. LaPine outscored Chemawa 19-1 1 in the third quar ter. The final quarter was pretty close with Lapine getting lo and Hawks top Chemawa braves The Chemawa boys fell short in the fourth quarter losing to the LaPine team 69-59. The game was relatively close until the final quar ter when LaPine went on a scoring spree. The game played pretty even in the early stages of the game as the score was 12-12 at the end of the first quarter. The Hawks led 28-26 at half time, and by 54-49 at the end of the third quarter. I he score was 32-37. In the first quarter, the Cowgirls made 12 points and M US totaled six. In the second quarter, the Buffs improved by one point, one more than Crook County. LaPine went on to defeat the girls from Grant Union 69-56 for the championship on Saturday night. their Invitational basketball tourn ament. The top scorer for LaPine was Ambrose and Curry who each scored 1 7 apiece, Skelton 15, Reeser 10. Buffaloes went on to beat Henley 95-65. halftime score was 14 to 18. The Buffs outscored Crook County during the third quarter by three points. Going into the fourth quarter, the score was 23 to 25. Crook County then came back and outscored the lady Buffs 4 to 9. This wrapped the game, giving the Cowgirls the win. Carol Miller and Marcy Hawes led Madras with seven point each. Becky Soliz made tour while Mona Smith, Daniel Gabriel and Kris King each scored three points. Joey Ratliff and Rhonda Ike scored a bucket each. Jocelyn Moses added a free throw. The girls varsity team won their opening game against the Cowgirls. In the first quarter, the Buffs out scored their opponents 2 1 to 9. The Buffs outscored the Coweirls in the second quarter 10 to 8 which made the halftime score 31 to 17. The Cowgirls made a comback in the second half, outscoring the lady Buffs five to 1 2 in the third quarter and 14 to 19 in the final quarter. The final score was 50 to 48 in Madras' favor. Christel Leonard led the team with 20 points. Janel Wiles scored 10, Laura Snow scored seven, Angie Namenuk scored six points, Emily Ralls had two buckets. Shauna Craig made a basket and Marcy Hawes made a free throw. The girls then hosted the Red mond Panthers December 6. The J.V. team outscored the Panthers every quarter. In the first quarter the Buffs had nine against the Panthers' four. In the second quarter, the Buffs scored 15, seven of which were made by Moses. The Panthers scored three points during the quarter. The halftime score was 27 to seven. In the third quarter, the Buffs scored eight points while the Panthers scored seven. During the fourth quarter, Madras scored 23 points and Redmond scored nine. The final score was 44 to 23. Becky Soliz and Marcy Hawes led the team with 10 point each. Moses had nine points and King had five. Mona Smith. Danni Katchia, Kerra Jones, Talya Scott and Miller each had two. Varsity action took the team to a win by nine points. First quarter action garnered the team 13 points while Redmond had six. Scoring was even during the second quarter, making the halftime score 28 to 21 in Madras' favor. Madras scored 16 while Red mond scored 1 2 in the third quarter. The score at the end of the third quarter was 44 to 33. The Panthers tried to make a comback in the fourth, outscoring the Buffs 18 to 20. The final score was 62 to 53. Angie Namenuk and Emily Ralls led the Buffs with 16 points each. Snow scored 1 2 points and Leonard scored nine. Blincoe had five along with five from Wiles. Wiles lead in rebounds for the Buffs, tearing down 10. Buff Girls Holiday InvitationalTourney December 16-17 White Swan White Swan came out the winner of the second annual 30 and over basketball tournament which was held in the Warm Springs Com munity Center, December 3 and 4, 1988. White Swan topped the 501's for the championship by the score of 131-106, in the double elimina tion affair. White Swan jumped out to an early lead and led at the end of each period and were in no serious trou ble throughout the game. At the end of the first quarter they led 37-26, and by half time the score was 78-50. When the final quarter started the score was 104-78, White Swan kept up the rampage to win the game 1 3 1 -1 06. Al Doublerunner was the high scorer for the winners pouring in a total of 35 points in the game, Jay Keys added 32, Russ Edwards 28, Gary Pierce 24, Karl Braden and L.O. Cool Fiander each had 6. G. Bigback was the top scorer for the 501's with a total of 35 points in the losing effort. K. LaCompt added 33, C. Stewert 17, F. Smith 11, D. Eastman 6, M. LaCompt 4. During the tournament all man agers pick the best players who they feel have done outstanding for the all-star list. Also there is an award for various other perform ances during the tourney. For the person who scored the most 3 point shots went to Jason Eli, of Wapato Irrigation team who made 11. Mr. Hustle award went to Gary Pierce of White Swan. High scorer in a game went to three individuals; Al Doublerunner, of White Swan, Chas Mitchell, of the Old Travelers and Eugene Bigback of the 501's. The MVP award went to Jay Keys of White Swan, the sportsmanship trophy went to Wapato. Zomont, White Buffaloes win Holiday Tournament The White Buffaloes brcced past the Henley Hornets Friday night 95 65. in the first round action of the with a total of 19 points, while Remo Smith came in from the bench and contributed 18 points for the Buffs with his expert out side shooting getting a few three pointers. Jason Harris also came off the bench to add 1 1, Paul Wlli ams II, Aaron Schnidcr 8, Jesus Garcia 6, Casey McKinsey 5, and Curt Cosgrove 3. Chad Wilder topped all scorers for the night with a total of 28 points before fouling out of the game. At times it appeared Wilder was the whole Henley team and what ever he put up went into the basket. Other scorers for Henley were Kruger 6, Burnette 6, Hank witz 6, Blofsky 2, Feeback 4, Mise 4, Prescott I. On Saturday night Henley rolled past a young Columbia team from White Salmon, WA. Running club The Warm Springs Reservation Runners Club has been formed. Officers are: Oliver Kirk, Chair man; Francilis Miller, Co-Chair-man; Sandra Greene, Secretary; and Howard Patt, Treasurer. The club is open to the public and is presently seeking new mem bers. There is no age limit and it is not limited to just runners! Annual membership fees are $5.00 per per son or $10.00 per family. Forms can be picked up from any of the club officers. Fees are to be paid to Howie Patt. Members are entitled to receive discounts on major runs sponsored by"W.S.R.R.,"and they will receive entry forms and flyers on upcoming events and races. T shirts with the club logo are in the making and will be sold only to club members. Sure to be a good one as it is designed by our own talented Oliver Kirk. The Pi-Ume-Sha run in June is the first major project by the club. Any comment able to sncll rcleif. In the championship game between the Madras White Buffa loes and the Crook County Cow boys, saw the Buffaloes jump out to a early in the first quarter and led through out the game for the big win. Jeff Cordill, had a whale of a game to top all scorers with 29 points. Schnieder added 10, Eric Peterson 10, Paul Willliams 14, Jason Harris 6, Remo Smith 2 to round out the scoring for the Buffs. Doug Hild led the Cowboy attack with 24 points, Chamness 20. Roberts 10. Hayes9. Wilberg4. and Haydcn 2. The game turned out to be exciting and fast. The score was 39-37 at the half. The Buffs got back on track to out score the Cowboys 24-12 in the third quarter to build back a good lead. The Cowboys made a run at the Buffaloes in the final quarter out scoring Madras 21-16, but fell short under the pressure of the Buffs as they held on to get the win and the championship. ', After the tourney there were all stars selected for outstandig play during the tournament. First selected was Jeff Cordill, from the Buffs, Doug Hild from Crook County, Paul Williams from Mad ras, and Chad Wilder from Henley and Eric Peterson from Madras. Beginning in January, the club will be sponsoring a run once a month as an incentive to any and everyone who has a desire to keep fit, or start a fitness program. At the end of the year, the club will be eiving out awards. Possibilities are: "Most Improved, ""Most runs en tered." and "Last but not least," awards. The first run is scheduled for January 7, 1989 at 1 1 a.m. starting at the Administratoin Buillding. The courses will be two miles and five miles. Entry fee is $3 per person. Entry forms can be picked up from club officers and should be paid to Sandra Greene. The next meeting is scheduled for January 5, 1989, at 5:30 p.m., in conference room 3 of the Tribal Administration Building. Come and join us.
