Social Security improves telephone service
The Social Security Adminis
tration has improved its telephone
service for the residents of Central
Oregon." said Kathleen Young.
Social Secuirity Manager in Bend

Anyone who has had to pay a
long-distance charge to call Social
Security can now call without cost
by using the toll-free number I-8K)-2.U5-USA(l-80O-234-5772).
In
addition, the hours people can call
have been extended.
With the new toll-free number,
anyone can call 24 hours a day.
Calls between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
each business day will be answered
by a live operator, and. at other
times, a caller can leave a message
which will be answered the next
business day, or at a time conve
nient for the caller.
Young said that callers should
find SSA's new toll-free telephone
service especially convenient when
they need to change a mailin"
Pro-wrestling comes
to Warm Springs
Big-time Portland Pro-Wrestling
is coming to Warm Springs Sun
day. October 23 at the Warm
Springs Community Center. Bouts
will start at 4 p.m. The bouts are
being coordinated by Leo liellon
of Sports and Entertainment Un
limited. Monies raised will be used
for medical expenses.
Featured will be Billy Two Eagles
and Steve Doll. Other big-time
wrestlers will also be on hand to
entertain the fans.

and general admission for adults is
$4; childrens tickets are S3 with
children under four years and Sen

Theannual Mid Columbia River
Powwow in Cclilo. Oregon will be
October 28. 29. and 30. The pow
wow is being sponsored by the Jim
family for Howard and Maggie
Jim in honor of their 50th Anniver
sary. Master of Ceremonies will be
Nathan "8-Buir Jim. The deadline
for contest registration will be at
6:30 p.m. on Saturday October 29.
The point system will be in effect
during the judging. The registra
tion fee will be S 2.
The powwow will be held in the
Cclilo longhouse with a total of
four grand entries. Sessin number
one will be at 7 p.m. Friday, second
session will be I p.m. on Saturday,
the third session will be 7 p.m. on
Saturday evening, and the fourth
session will take place at I p.m. on
Sunday.
The powwow will consist of
prizes over S 1 5.000. There will also
be a raffle drawing at the comple
tion of the pow-wow with raffle
tickets selling at S I eachdunngthe
celebration. The committee is
looking for ticket sellers for their
fund raising. There will be prizes to
the highest ticket seller, first place
being a boys' or girls' ten speed
bicycle, walkman recorder, a
walkman. two $ 50 gift certificates,
hair dryer and so on. Each ticket
seller will also receive 20 percent of
their profit.
There will also be a drum contest
during the event with first pric sit
ting at $ 1000. second place is $ 800.
third S 600, fourth will be $ 400 and
fifth place is J 200.
The different catagorics will be
men and ladies Traditional, men
and ladies Fancy, mens Grass
Dance, men and women Team
Dance, the Hoop Dance. Teen 13
through 17 years of age, girls Tra
ditional, girls Fancy, boys and girls
Team dance combined, Tiny Tots
for ages six years and under for
both bqvs and girls, Junior div
ision forages 7 through 12 for both
boys and girls for Traditional and
Fancy, the Mask Dance forages 18
and over and also for ages 17 and
under, a golden age group for both
men and women will be held which
will consist of ages 55 and over, an
owl and rabbit dance will also take
place for ages 17 and over.

Martial arts tourney set
Christmas powwow set
The Eleventh Annual Christmas
Powwow and Potlatch sponsored
by the Coos Bay Education Pro
gram will be held at the National
Guard Armory in Coos Bay on
December 19.
The one day activities will start
at 1 p.m. with the children's activi
ties and the potlatch, at 4:30 p.m.
a feast will be held, the grand entry
will be at 6 p.m., at 7 p.m. drum
ming and dancing will began and at
8:30 p.m. a raffle drawing will be
held. There will be craft tables
for rent. Everyone is invited to
attend the powwow potlatch to
share the fun.

A Martial Arts Tournament will

munity Center October 22. 1988.
Registration will start at 9 a.m. on
that day with the elimination bouts
beginning at 1 1 a.m.
All fighters and ranks are wel
come to take part in the one-day
event. Main division events offered
are Weapons, Kata and Sparring
with entry fees of $10.50 for one
division; $ 1 3 for two divisions and
$15 for three divisions.

Warm Springs Parks and Outdoors officer Lester Poitra distributes coho
salmon from Eagle Creek fish hatchery to tribal members. Tribal
members are alerted to distribution times before natural resources per
sonnel pick up the fish.

Rose Arnette Perez
Rose Arnette Perez, 64, of Por
tland. Oregon died on October 5,
1988 at the Oregon Health Scien
ces Hospital in Portland.
She was born April 15. .1924 to
Markham and Dorotha (Lew)
Arnette at Lookout, California.
On June 22. 1 954 in Reno, Neveda
she married Lawrence Brown of
Warm Springs. He preceded her in
death March 21. 1955. She later
married William Perez of Portland.
She was a homemaker. She was a
charter member of the Elliott Pal
mer Veteran of Foreign Wars Aux
iliary at Warm Springs.
She is survived by her husband,
William. Perez; a daughter. Laura
Brown of Warm Springs; a brother,
Lamont Brown; sisters, Harriet
Williams, Charlotte Shike, Neda
Wesley and Eliza Brown all of
Warm Springs; and seven grand
children. Dressing ceremonies were held
at the Simnasho Longhouse on
October 7, 1988 with services con
ducted by Prosanna Williams. Over
night ceremonies followed at the
Longhouse with Matilda Mitchell
officiating. Burial was October 8,
1988 at the Simnasho Cemetery.
She was given military honors by
the Elliot Palmer Post w ith Wood
row Smith and Kathleen Foltz presiding.
