IHS offers scholarships for 88-89
The Indian Health Service(IHS),
Department of Health and Human
Services, is now accepting applica
tions for the fiscal year (FY) 1988
scholarship cycle for three scholar
ship programs authorized by the
Indian Health Care Improvement
Act (Public Law 94-437) and its
amendments. Awards made will be
for funding in the 1988-89 school
year. This will be the only scholar
ship cycle in FY 1988 for the fol
lowing programs:
Health professions preparatory
scholarship program This program
provides financial assistance for
Indian students only to enroll in
courses that will prepare them for
acceptance into health professions
schools. Courses may be either
compensatory (required to improve
science, mathematics, or other basic
skills and knowledge) or prcpro
fcssional (required in order to qual
ify for admission into a health pro
fessions program).
In order for an applicant to be
considered for Section 103 funding
during the FY 1988 Scholarship
cycle, heshe must be accepted by
and or enrolled in a program begin
ning in fall 1 988 for one (he priority
career categories of: I. prcnursing
preparatory to entry into BSN pro
grams only; 2. prcaccounting -preparatory
tocntry intoan Accounting
program and; 3. prcpharmacy
preparatory to entry into a phar
macy program.
Health prolessions pregraduate
scholarship program provides finan
cial support for Indian students
only to enroll in courses leading to
a baccalaureate degree in specific
preprofessional areas.
For the 1988 scholarship cycle,
an applicant must be accepted by

ning in Fall 1988 for one of the

Byron Wayne Berry, 28, of Warm
Springs was found dead in the Dry
Creek housing area April 6, 1988.
He was a member of the Confeder
ated Tribes of Warm Springs.
He was born November 16, 1959
to George and Rose (Dick) Berry
in Redmond, Oregon. He grew up
on the Warm Springs reservation.
He attended schools in Warm
Springs, Madras and Chemawa.
During his younger years he was a
member of the Warm Springs Box
ing Club. His coach, Gerald Smith
stated that "he did real well during

his death he was working as an
apprentice carpenter under the JTPA
program.
He is survived by his father,
George Speakthunder of Montana,
his mother, Rose (Dick) Mitchell,
his stepfather Pierson M itchell, two
daughters Angel Star and LaVetta
Lee Berry; a son, Bruce Teawala
Berry, brothers, Larry Dick, Lean
der Kalama, David Kalama, Frank
Kalama, Billy Joe Berry and Buzzy
Joe Berry, sisters Roberta Berry,
Lucelia Berry, Betty Kalama,
Sachcen Speakthunder and Bobbi
Jo Berry, and numerous aunts,
uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by a
brother Bruce Berry on July 25,
1975 and a sister, April Berry on
September 3, 1963.
Dressing ceremonies were held
Friday, April 8 at the Simnasho
Longhouse with overnight cerem
onies following. Burial was held at
dawn on Saturday, April 9 at the
Mouth of the Warm Springs River
Cemetery.
-Rodney Ronald Mitchell-
Enrolled member of the Confed
erated Tribes of Warm Springs and
lifetime resident, Rodney Ronald
Mitchell, 27, died in a single car
accident on the highway 3 on
Thursday, April 7, 1988.
He was born to Arthur and Ber
nice (Tohet) Mitchell in Bend, Ore
gon December 16, 1960. He attended
schools in Warm Springs and
" Madras. While in high school he
was active in freshman basketball,
junior varsity basketball and var
sity basketball, he was a member of
the Future Farmers of America,
participated in the high school Indian
Club during his freshman and sopho
more years, and was a student
council representative his sopho
more and senior year. He gradu
ated from high school in 1980. He
had worked for the Confederated
Tribes as an accountant. He enjoyed
all sports but held a special love for
basketball and volleyball.
Surviving hime are his parents, a
daughter Sharondee Mitchell,
brothers, Issac Mitchell, Eric Mit
chell, Anthony Mitchell, and Robin
son Mitchell, sisters, Gloria Mit
chell. Nadine Mitchell, Elfreda
Mitchell, and Tonya Mitchell all of
Warm Springs and numerous aunts,
uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Dressing ceremonies were held
Friday, April 8, 1 988 at the Agency
Longhouse in Warm Springs with
overnight ceremonies following at
the Longhouse. Burial was at the
Dry Creek Cemetery on Saturday,
April 9, 1988.

She attended schools in Warm
Springs and Madras. During high
school she was active in the Indian
Club. In 1984, she graduated from
high school. Jewell worked for two
years in the tribal insurance depart
ment. At the time of her death she
was employed as a secretary for
Tribal Council and worked as a
committee secretary for the Educa
tion, Fish and Wildlife and Timber
committees. Jewell held a special
interest in rodeos and horses.
Her hobbies were basket making
and beadwork.
She was the granddaughter of
the late Tom and Sadie (Schoolie)
Brown of Simnasho, Oregon and
the late Levi Van Pelt of Umatilla,
Oregon and the late Dorothy (Sim
tustus) Van Pelt of Warm Springs.
She was preceded in death by her
father Chester on September 10,
1976.
Survivors are her mother, Eliza
Brown, her step-father Garry Hicks,
brothers Levi Van Pelt, Anthony
Van Pelt, Chester Van Pelt, Jr.,
Vernon Suppah, Jr. and Garry
Hicks, Jr.; sisters Lilly Patt Van
Pelt and Marella Van Pelt Sam;
aunts Naomi Van Pelt of Lapwai,
Idaho, Betty Lucio, Charlotte
Shike, Neda Wesley and Harriet
Williams all of Warm Springs;
uncles Kenny Van Pelt of Pen

Saturday, April 9 at the Agency
Longhouse with Silas and Prosanna
Williams officiating. Seven Drum
overnight ceremonies at the Long
house followed. Burial was April
1 1 at the Simnasho Cemetery.

The infant son of Edward and
Denise (Brunoe) Lucei, Sr., Trevor
Kyle, aged three months and 29
days, died April 11, 1988 at the
home of his parents. He was a vic
tim of Sudden Infant Death Syn
drome (SIDS).
He was born December 13, 1987
at' Mountain View Hospital in
Madras.
Surviving him are his parents, a
brother Edward Lucei, Jr., and
grandparents, Norman and Janice
Lucei and Gilbert and Patty Bru
noe all of Warm Springs.
Dressing ceremonies were held
at the Warm Springs Indian Shaker
Church on Wednesday, April 13
with overnight ceremonies follow
ing. Burial was Thursday, April 14
at the Agency Cemetery.

gon. Surviving the baby are his par
ents, a sister Juanita Pacheco, grand
parents. Norma Smith, Victor Smith
and Margaret Boise all of Warm
Springs, a great grandmother.

mon, Washington and numerous
aunts and uncles.
Tribal dressing ceremonies were
held at the Evergreen Chapel in
Madras, Oregon on April 15. Imme
diately following, funeral services
were held at the Warm Springs
Indian Shaker Church. Burial was
April 1 5 at the Agency Cemetery in
Warm Springs.
Michael Teeman-
A member of the Burns Paiute
reservation, Michael Teeman, 66.
died April 16, 1988 on Highway 26
near Warm Springs.
Teeman was born July 3, 1921 in
Burns. Oregon. He was a veteran
of the United States Army. During
the last six yean he had lived in the
Warm springs area and had worked
as a general laborer. He was a
member of the Burns Catholic
Church.
He is survived by daughter
Sharon Hines of Warm Springs, a
son. Manual Teeman of Burns and
a sister. Elizabeth Beers of Burns.
Dressing ceremonies were held
at the Agency Longhouse in Warm
Springs on April 18. The funeral
was held at the Burns Catholic
Church. Burial was also in Burns.
