U ; White Buffaloes top Nyssa Spllyy Tymoo photo by Ulllor The Madras White Buffaloes evened their league standings to a 3 win and 3 loss record on Sat. night Feb. 6, as they posted a 62-51 win over the Nyssa Bulldogs here on the home floor. The Buffs were never in any trouble throughout the game lead ing 18-10, at the end of the first quarter and 36-21 at the half. The Nyssa team came our strong in the third quarter to out score the Buffs 20-14. but with the lead the Buffs had built early in the game kept them out in front. The Buffs settled down in the final quarter to out score the Bu'Mogs and fake the win. Paul Williams the Buff Jr. for ward was the top point producer for the Buffs with a total of 14, Schneider and Jeff Cordill each scored 12 apiece, Steve Cordill and Buster Stoddard each added 8 points apiece, Curt Cosgrove 6, and Jab bar Davis 2 to round out the scor ing for the Buffs. The Buffs had a total of 12 fouls during the game and they were only four out of 1 1 at the free throw line. Free throws are important, sometimes games are won or lost at the free throw line. Nyssa had 14 fouls whistled on . , ''Kf .4.1 them during the game, they were 6 of 13 at the free throw line for a little better percentage at that depart ment. Sloggert and Scott Bullock each scored 14 points for the losers while Barney Bukeradded 12, Ron Talbert6andJensen3,EricKnothe 2 to round out the scoring for Nyssa. The Buffs travel to Burns for their next game with the Hilanders for the return game. In their first meeting the Buffs won the first game, but the Hilanders, no matter how low they may be in the league standings they spell trouble on their home court. Mac Hi, Ontario and Bakei still havetocometo Madras and all three teams are a threat and could cause trouble for the Buffs. Tournament begins Feb. 12 The annual 16 and Under Bas ketball tournament starts Friday, February 12 at the Warm Springs Community Center. The three-day event will have teams from White Swan. Wapatoand Nespelem. Wash ington and four local boys' teams, the Sid waiter Flats, the Vols. Warm Springs Community Center and the Renegades. The first game of the eight team double elimination play will be between White Swan and the Sid walter Flats boys at 6 p.m. on Fri day. The Warm Springs Vols will go against the Warm Springs Com munity Center at 7:30. Friday. The third game will feature Warm Springs Renegades against the Wapato team starting at 9 p.m. On Saturday. February 13 a Nespelem team will meet a second team from "vi-iite Swan at 10 a.m. 1 earns will be vying for the cham pionship title and plaques; plaques will also be given for second, third and fourth place teams with ten jerseys for the championship team, a most valuable player plaque and a Mr. Hustle plaque will be given. One team will be selected for the sportsmanship plaque. Remo Smith of the Buffs is setting up a play against Vale in the Greater Oregon L eague game. First they went down to The Dalles and won a close game there, next they traveled to Hood River Valley and beat the Eagles on their home floor. Both games were close as the Buffs managed to pull out It was a .matter of running out the clock for the Buffs to notch a victory overa welt, bahced BendH Lava Bear girls basketball team. This happened on the Buffs home floor on Feb. 2, 1988. The Buffs got the jump on the Bend Lava Bears which appeared to get them a little off track and somewhat rattled as Jenel Wiles canned three buckets, the wins. Then the Bend Lava ; AngieJNamenuk got two Held goals, Bears the AAA threat in the Inter- Christel Leonard added a field goal Mountain league, came into town, but the Buffaloes were able to close the door on them and take the victory. As Bend rolled into town things looked bit gloomy for the Buffs, especially during the JV game as Bend was ripping up the Madras girls while a lean and calm varsity team sat in the stand watching the game. Dur ing pre-game warm-up the Bend team looked smooth and well bal anced and that the Buffs were in for a long night. The Bend girls may free throw line to Bends 4-8. Christel Leonard was fouled and she calmly sank a pair free throws to give the Buffs the three point lead. The Lava Bears make two desperate attempts on two three points shots to try to even the score but each time the ball bounced away and time ran out giving the Buffs the victory. Tourney set The Central Oregon Racquetball tournament, hosted by the intram ural department at Central Oregon Community College, will be held this year from February 15 to the 25. Men and women over age 18 are eligible to enter with skill levels ranging from novice through advanced. All matches will be played after 5:30 p.m. on the courts in COCC Mazama gym.
